The last post to this thread was in mid-November. Has this problem with iCloud losing files been solved?

I am reluctant to use iCloud. I set up iCloud, then later decided to turn it off for documents. The system prompted me that turning off iCloud would delete all documents stored in iCloud. That was frightening, so I did not turn off iCloud for documents. Instead I block documents from ICloud at the application level. When I have a requirement to upload an individual document to iCloud, I upload only that one document.

What really scares me about documents and iCloud is the "all or nothing" aspect. Use it, and if later you want to turn it off, lose it all. Not nice.

Having said all that, this is a harsh reminder that we have to be responsible for our own backups and not rely on anyone's "cloud".

No, the problem has not been solved.

I lost a keynote doc in my iPad a few hours before I needed it for a talk. I can't rely on iCloud for iWork until some big fixes are on the way, so I disabled it.

I have all my work documents in DropBox so now I use the dropbox app. to access my docs and open them in iWork when needed. If I create/edit something in iWork I e-mail the doc to myself.

(Actually I will probably enable iCloud for iWork again. As long as I keep the docs. in DopBox I am less scared of iWork losing my data...)

Certainly the only solution that is and has been pending for some time is the ability of versioned backups like dropbox does. Ability to go back in time and see/recover all updates. Even if only via web interface. There can be an option to permanently delete files, again only via web and by additionally asking for password.

re Backup wise-guys: Yes, backing up used to be great when Time Machine came out and everything supported it. As of my writing one of the crucial apps, NOTES, does not backup to Time Machine and I suppose so don't all your iCloud store documents. Way to go killing a great and ingenious backup solution--Time Machine.

I'm confused - deleting icloud on one of your devices would remove your documents from all of your devices? I was working on a document on my iPad, also worked on it later on my iMac, but then signed out of iCloud on my iMac as I sold the machine. When I went to my iPad later to work on the doc ALL of the doc's were gone.

I haven't experienced problems with my other iCloud items (calendar, photostream) that I was using on the old iMac. Can you explain more?
