Well, get this. I just got back to the states after being with the ear speaker not working for about 7 days. I landed 6:00 AM, and I was about to go to the Apple store this morning with an appointment at 9:10 AM. Went home, backed-up the phone, synced everything, peeled off the zagg protector and just after getting rid of the protector, I got a call. My reflex was to pick it up, and it worked!! Maybe it was working before that, but I couldn't tell; it wasn't working when I boarded the plane, that's for sure.

I really don't understand. I reset it, reflashed it, downgraded it, did the accessibility thing, the headphones jack thing, checked the usb connector for dirt or hairs, nothing worked. I really do prefer it that way, I don't want a refurbished phone.

You are not alone! I upgrade my wife's iphone 4 to iOS5 today and the same thing happened. Had no problems before this upgrade. Also, ran into another bug that people have found - call go directly to voice mail if WiFi is set to on. (You can dial out, but people can't call you!) Turning off Wifi seems to fix this for now. So some pretty serious bugs with ios5.

I have the same problem. After upgrading, have to put on speaker phone to hear callers talking to me, although they can hear what I am saying. Or I have to use the ear buds. I also tried Ayman's solution and saw the options briefly (there was one for speaker and one for iphone) but now cannot make those options come back. ALso, ran into a nice bug that stops calls from coming in if you have WiFi turned on.

Update. so I have wiped the phone and reloaded the phone to no avail. Took it too Verizon and they did some reset and wipe and still the high pitch if you make a call is heard on both ends. So end of the line for this phone, they are sending me a replacement. According to Verizon help they are not familar with this problem, but when the guy heard it at the store after the wipe he said lets get you a new phone.

@seangingras; iPhone 4? I've had this issue with my new 4s, actually 2 4s's (1st one was replaced due to water damage). No apparent problem w/incoming calls. On outgoing calls I don't get sound through the earpice and toggling between between speaker & iPhone doesn't help during the call. But, once an incoming call comes in it works again for a while.

Here are a couple of trouble shooting steps I've taken:

1) from iPhone cal my home phone - result home phone rings, but I don't hear it in the iPhone earpiece. Toggle to Speaker; hear it through speaker; toggle back to iPhone, no sound through earpiece.

2) Call iPhone from home phone. iPhone rings, I pick up and the earpiece works.Hang up from that call; use iPhone to call home phone and the earpiece on the iPhone now works. Apparently the incoming call did something?

3) The condition from step 1) re-appears occasionally, maybe after de-activating my BT headset? Once I get an incoming call all is good for a while.

I'm following this thread and it's still unclear to me whther it is a HW or SW problem. The reason I asked my first question to @seangingras is if it's a 4, maybe it is iOS5? Given the apparent volume of this issue I've got to believe that Apple will make a statement and a fix in the near future.

mine wasnt intermittent. problem occurred IMMEDIATELY after ios5 upgrade.

- restored 2 times to my orig phone- no luck.

restored to new phone- no luck.

no amount of fiddling had any effect. no water damage to the phone. it was 362 days old though. luckily...

Brought to apple store in boston. they attempted a restore, no luck. and they gave me a new one. however, if this had happened next week, I would have been screwed.

that applecare extension is looking better...

Im having the exact same problem, took it to the apple store, the people there said they can't verify whether this is a hardware of software issue as they are not allowed to take the phone apart to check out the speaker (they can only take the back cover off). My warranty expired so they can't replace the phone for free either...

this ***** man!!! i hope someone can help as I am not familiar disassembing my phone and fix it myself...
