Recover photos after updating with iOS5

I connected my iphone to update it with the iOS5 and it said it created a backup before updating it, but when I clicked Restore most of my photos where gone. I only had my first 20 photos out of almost 300. How can I recover them? I checked iPhoto but they weren't there!!

iPhone 4, iOS 4.3.3, iOS 5

Had the same problem w/ my iphone 3 during this last wonderful iOS update.

Tried several things suggested in the comments and the only thing that worked (eventually) was going to http://www.macroplant.com/iexplorer/ and downloading the iExplorer software. Thanks to the previous commenters who made the iExplorer suggestion.

Had a few hurdles though. After I installed it, iExplorer would begin to open, then would "stop working" and shut down. I decided to restart the PC (and installed a pending Windows Update), and eventually got iExplorer to open. Browsed to:

iPhone/Media/DCIM/100APPLE

All 500+ pictures were there. I copied all to a separate folder on my PC.

Haven't bothered to try and get them back on my iphone yet, but I don't care. At least I was able to recover them.

Thanks again to the people who shared the iExplorer suggestion/resource. Much appreciated.

This might sound heartless, but read the instruction manual.

Anytime you make major changes to your phone, be 100% sure that you have everything before you do.

It's the same problem with OS X and Time Machine. People will experience data loss - one of the most traumatic experiences out there - but, when you explain to them that there IS an option to be able to back up your data then they become upset because it was preventable.

RARELY do people read and fully understand the manual and how to do things that are outlined in it. If they would, they would understand the process.

With Apple, you have 90 days when you get your device to call Apple Care hotline FOR FREE. They will help you set up the backup system - explained in the manual - on the phone.

If it were really important to me, I would do test photos on my mobile device - then sync it to iTunes, then check to see if it worked. That way, I knew.

I would never take a camera to an important event without testing the camera and making sure I could use it. Likewise, I would never rely on a camera to take photos of an important event if I wasn't 100% confident that it served the purpose I needed it to.

The problem is - if its backed up fine in the past, and everything has worked in the past, then randomly (and yes, I mean randomly) it decides to not correctly back up the phone - That has nothing to do with reading the manual. I honestly do not believe it was user error either. I think a lot more people ended up having this issue then in these forums.

I updated all apps then backed up to ICloud prior to installation of IOS 7 update so how do I get my photoes back? My photos now start almost a month ago. I've lost like 4,000 pics. I do have most on my IPad 2 which I have not updated.. I never use ITunes for back up nor do I use it to sync. I always use ICloud. I've tried powering it off. All I can think of to do is install ITunes on my computer, hook up my IPad to it, download my pics, then sync my Iphone to ITunes. Is there a better or easier way?
