Cant Update to iPhoto 9.2

I bought a new macbook pro in June with iLife 11 installed on it (which now has been upgraded to Lion, which I got for free because I bought it close to release fate). Now I would like to update so I can use photostream. But I can not install the update. Whenever I go to the system updates in preferences, it says no new software updates. When I go to the updates in iPhoto it "This version of iPhoto (9.1.5) is the current version." When I download a manual update from apple.com, I download it, extract it open iPhoto9.2Update.pkg and I get the error

"Alert. iPhoto 9.1.0 or later is required to install this update."

Why?? I want to fully use my iCloud!

If you have iPhoto 9.1 (or newer) installed to the default install location (/Applications) but you can't update it, this is how I got it working:

1) Download the latest update (right now it's version 9.3.2) from the Apple support pages: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1562

you can try to run it, but most likely it will tell you "iPhoto 9.1 or newer is required" .. the next steps will explain how to patch that update, so it won't check your current installation:

2) run Terminal (you'll find it in Launchpad / Applications - Utilities), type "cd Downloads" and hit enter

3) type "pkgutil --expand nameofupdatefile.pkg ./extracted/" and hit enter (don't close it yet)

4) when finished: in the extracted Folder edit a file called "Distribution" with a text editor of your choice:

you'll see a lot of - so called - functions like this

function checkxy() {

      ...

}

in that file and all you have to do is replace the "..." with "return true;" in all of those functions, then save the file

5) type "pkgutil --flatten ./extracted/ iphotoupdate.pkg", hit enter and wait .. when finished run the new file "iphotoupdate.pkg"

if you did everything correctly it should work now 🙂
