I too have the same issue. Spent 5 hours last night on the phone with them. Keep getting put higher on the knowledge hierarchy. Did everything you've all done and still the issue is there. I also have the AMD chipset and XP. This problem has now moved up to the software engineers, so hopefully I can get an answer. If you have iPhone with ios5 you need to have the current iTunes. I've been told not to sync until this is resolved. My iPhone music is still ok. Good luck all!

Having the same problem here... on my AMD Athlon 3200 Win7 Machine, imported songs sound just as they have been described here, garbled, tinny, unlistenable. This machine also has a Via Audio Controller.

On my Intel x64 Win7 laptop, everything (so far) sounds fine. Realtek & Intel audio hardware on this machine.

Interesting... I just rebooted the AMD machine, and the audio in iTunes is OK now. I'll add more info if the sound gets garbled again.

Certainly looks like a transient bug in the iTunes 10.5 code. Lovely.

Pretty much have it narrowed down to iTunes 10.5, the AMD chipset, and mp3 files.

The same file (mp3) format plays flawlessly on an old P4, a new Core i7 but painfully scrambled on the AMD 3200.

All other files play flawlessly on all three machines (e.g., m4a). None of these problem existed prior to the 10.5 update.

Take the SAME mp3 file, plays fine on all three computers using Windows Media Player.

Clearly, a problem with the mp3 decoding on AMD machines under iTunes 10.5.

Eagerly anticipating iTunes 10.5.1

This is probably the only time Im going to ask a question on here but, after I got the new IOS 5 software for my ipod touch and 10.5 itunes for my macbook air, my songs were terribly distorted especially the ones with heavy bass. Like the others have said, this has never happened to me before until I got IOS 5. But one solution I did was I took the normal MP3 song I have that was distorted and made a copy of that song into AAC version. It stopped the distortion and made it clear, but it kind of made the song not as loud and the bass wasn't as low but at least it stop distortion. But I am also wondering, is it this new IOS 5 software that caused this song distortion?

I was looking at new laptops at Best Buy yesterday and when they tried to sell me a system with an AMD chip I told them about the problem discussed here. I wound up in a conflab with their sales staff and their "Geek Squad" people and pointed them to this forum.

They were pretty shocked and upset because Apple has yet to send out a tech bulletin on this to their own tech people in the field.

Sounds like someone is trying to save face here.

I love iTunes but if they don't come out with a fix soon, or at least a statement to acknowledge the problem then I'll have to move on.

I'm now afraid to update iTunes on my old reliable Mac PPC laptop.

Well I'm glad that I am not the only one having this issue!

I also have an older AMD system (Athlon 3200+) and am running Windows XP. Songs synced to my iPhone and iPod play fine, but in iTunes and music burned to CD's they sound like everyone else has described here. The same MP3's play perfectly in other media players on my pc.

Come on Apple, fix this issue!
