I am one of the people that had the tin-whistle issues with 10.5 and went back to 10.4.

I am pleased to say that 10.5.1 was tried and seems to have corrected the problem.

However, I did not allow the program to self-update from the Apple web site. Rather I downloaded a copy of the installer from FileHippo and used that.

In my case I did notice that the installer took a rather large amount of time to run. I watched it take a decent 9-10 minutes to run in real time. A few times I thought the installer had frozen but restrained myself to allow it time to do what ever it needed. There were a few times the i-bar showing progress seemed to just sit there and no indication that anything was happening. Even my disk activity light seems to stop.

There was a lot of messages stating it was validating the install, re-writes to the registry, etc. I was relieved when the installer finished as I did not relish what might have been left to clean up.

As a precaution however I have retained the old installer for 10.4 just in case.

In my case I have a dual hard drive system with "C" and "F" as the drive designations. I always install iTunes and most programs on the second and larger hard drive as the primary "C" is getting full so I usually only allow Windows and what *needs* to be there on "C". Some programs, such as Google's offerings, are forced onto the primary drive so I have to acount for that. However iTunes and all players and music are on the second drive.

Whether that had any impact on the rather long install time is unknown to me but always a possibility.

But like... darn near 10 minutes.

Possibly not completely fixed in my case.

Is anyone now experiencing the stuttering of ALL their music files after the iTunes 10.5.1.42 current update like I am?

While I agree that removing the dependence on Quicktime probably had something to do with the robot sound glitch, now I have a whole new issue apparently tied to this.

Under iTunes 10.4.1 our MP3 and AAC files purchased thru iTunes played properly.

Under iTunes 10.5 our MP3 files had the robot sound playback but the AAC files purchased thru iTunes continued to play properly.

Now frustratingly under iTunes 10.5.1 without Quicktime installed, our MP3 files no longer have the robot sound issue BUT now both our MP3 files AND our AAC files purchased thru iTunes stutter and pop when played back.

Ironically, when I open one of my test MP3 files in Windows Media Player 11 it of course plays smooth as glass without stuttering.

Clearly my situation is a case of one step forward and two steps back when it comes to both released versions of iTunes 10.5 and 10.5.1.

My Windows XP Home PC with an AMD Athlon XP 1800+ 1.53 GHz processor and 1 GB of RAM clearly meets the iTunes system requirements.

This reprogramming of the iTunes software to eliminate the dependence on Quicktime has sure seemed to have led to some bugs in the decoding process now.

Has anyone else seen this?

Update:

In an earlier post from this morning I tested the iTunes 10.5.1 update robot sound fix WITHOUT QuickTime installed but experienced stuttering playback.

Since then, I decided to try installing the new version of QuickTime 7.7.1. Now my playback is back to normal across all file types WITH QuickTime installed alongside iTunes.

Coincidence? Who knows at this point. But it adds to the possibility that iTunes has gone through some growing pains in trying to move away from it's dependence on QuickTime for decoding.
