iPhone 4S - 3G / 2G settings?

just got my iPhone 4S home. set it all up ok. 3G in my property is not so good so with the 3GS I used to turn 3G off. I don't have the option to do this in the usual location on the 4S. Is this intentional by Apple or is it a glitch for me?

This is a problem in the UK as well as in the US and it isn't not carrier specific. It seems to be part of the iOS 5. I most certainly had it with my iPhone 4 and with iOS 4xx.

While the phone will revert to 2G if it thinks it needs to, that isn't good enough. I can't go a whole day even on mostly standby. I've taken to turning off WiFi when I'm away from it because I can't turn off the 3G. I realize Siri won't work on 2G and maybe that is what has driven it-Apple's special, incredible new feature but if my phone has a dead battery it won't matter anyway.

Spread the news. Complain. We need to get this option back!

I thought this was a Sprint thing when I switched from AT&T's crappy service. I will check my old iphone4 and see if that option is there. It is upgraded to ios5. I agree they should bring that feature back and should have never removed it.

Another feature they also removed was turning off all notifications with one switch. Now you can't do that either. You have to turn individually all off. No way to temporarily turn off notifications anymore.

I spoke to Apple at the genius bar and over a call to Apple support. Both confirmed it is the iPhone 4S that does not have the option, they can't confirm why. Reading about CDMA / GSM type phones, apparently it is not possible to control which connection type you are making... don't know why though.

Guess what Apple? You're devs will need to find a way, because my battery is worse than my 2 year old 3GS! What a joke! I think of what I have just spent on this and feel silly because you haven't supplied me with a battery suitable to support the selling points of the device that I let myself get sucked in by.

This has a large impact on me. I was going to buy the phone today from an Orange store in my nearest town, until they told me that I wouldn't be able to turn off the 3G to 2G. This is a huge problem-I wouldn't be able to make phone calls or text anyone, because they 3G signal where I live is so poor. It's such a shame that I couldn't purchase one today, I have been waiting for quite a while to get my hands on an iPhone.
It's a fundamental mistake that apple need to correct, this has the potential to be quite a significant problem for users. I only hope that they update the software so that I can purchase an iPhone 4S-without it I will not be able to, simply because I wouldn't be able to use it to call or text anyone. It's preposterous.

More info on my situation, my battery was getting very hot a couple of times when charging so much so that the plastic seal around the glass front and back had started to come away, I couldn't pick up calls when listening to music, I didn't have the option to create a personal hotspot dispute my carrier supplying it, I had echoes on calls and a bunch of other stuff which I relayed at the genius bar.

Got a brand new boxed retail swap out :)

The fella reckoned he knew nothing about the lack of 3G toggle. I don't think Apple are telling their staff so each person attending a genius bar session get the same "oh, you must be the only person with that problem" response...
