just got my iPhone 4S home. set it all up ok. 3G in my property is not so good so with the 3GS I used to turn 3G off. I don't have the option to do this in the usual location on the 4S. Is this intentional by Apple or is it a glitch for me?
Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data 'OFF'
If I do that I turn off data all together. I want to just turn 3G off so EDGE and GPRS are still available. The option is not there like it was on the 3GS..

Same issue here. Cant get reception as I want to turn off 3G but can't

Got to laugh. Phoned support and got referred to this thread and told "yeah that option isn't available"
..... Cheers mate. But that means I CAN'T MAKE PHONE CALLS...

they removed the option from the 4S itself.
probably why standby time dropped from 300 to 200 hours.
Do you think it is a mistake? So for example here http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html how can we achieve 14hours talktime if we cant choose to use 2G?
Even the iPhone Battery Care page advises to turn off 3G for better life.
I went into the apple store again today, I checked a load of 4S's on display. All the same, no option to turn 3G off.
The Apple staff didnt even know! They reckon it will be back in iOS 5.1 if enough people say they need it...
In that case, "Hey Apple, I need the option to disable 3G restored on the iPhone 4S please!" I strongly suspect this is related to Siri's data network requirement, but it easy to just pop up a box stating that if 3G is disabled and WiFi not available, Siri will automatically be disabled as well. Okay, fine, no problem here...shut it down. At least give people the option...
BTW, just got off the phone with AT&T and Apple. AT&T support had no idea and transferred me Apple. The Apple support tech was great, but basically just confirmed that it is missing on the 4S.
