iMessage between iPhone, iPod, iPad under same Apple ID

In our iOS devices, my family all use my husband's Apple ID for the Settings -> Store, so that we may buy apps once and have them on all our devices (daughter's iPod, etc.)

We have all set our devices up with our own Settings -> iCloud ID. I read in another discussion that this would allow us to iMessage between each other.

It's not really working. I sat down with my husband's iPhone, my iPhone, and my daughter's iPod Touch last night. I'd try to send a message from my daughter's touch to my phone number; and I would get it, and my husband would get it too. There's some wonky stuff going on here.

Unless someone has some kind of magic sauce to suddenly make iMessage work BETWEEN our family's devices...? Bueller...?

Similar family dynamics here. We share the iTunes account and will need to set up individual cloud accounts. Is that done right from the device and does the icloud email address have to be the same as each of our emails in order for the email to work ? Or is icloud one thing and we still keep our regular email addresses?

Yes, you can do it right from the device--that's how I did it--

And yes, you can make it different than your current email address--doesn't have to be the same.

I tried to do it and I still can't, I'm freaking out. Frankly, the iMessage in my iPhone is working, but not in my iPod. And somehow I can't send any iMessage from my ipod. I made iCloud ID for my iPod and signed in with the new iCloud ID for the iMessage. Did I do anything wrong?

iTunes will not allow me to totally validate my 10 y/o daughters Apple ID due to age, so signing her out of mine doesn't seem to help, unless the iMessage can be related to her yahoo email address

my home phones are setup with same apple id. but my problem is that when i send an imessage or set a remider it shows up on my sons and wife phone. I dont get theirs but they get mine

I'm sad to say but, only iOS Devices bought with iOS 5 included (Or later) like iPad 2 and iPhone 4S will get to have an iMessage on their iOS Devices.

This is possible, within setting, iMessage, recover at.... Change this to a personal email account of the device owner. Just make sure in your contacts to add this email to the person and now you can iMessage to all devices individual while signed in on the same account.

how do i change the settings on a mac?

those instructions are definitely good for an iphone... but i was wondering if there is some way to do the same thing on a mac? on a mac there's no settings, only system preferences...
