iMessage sent from email address rather than phone number...

I'm having similar problems with my iMessage update under iOS 5. When I send text messages to other iPhone users, it appears as iMessage and from my email address rather than my phone number. I went into Settings > Messages > Receive At, but there's no option to add my phone number. It keeps showing my Apple Account, which I registered under for iMessage and iCloud with my email address. It only allows me to add another email address. From what I can tell, non-iPhone users are still receiving my text messages from my number like regular. If I turn iMessage OFF, I'm sending regular text messages to all users. Anyone have a fix yet? I'm wondering if this was an Apple goof that won't be resolved until the next iPhone update.

Wait...I think I figured it out. When you click Receive At, click Apple ID and Sign Out. Once you've signed out, the Receive At turns to "Use your Apple ID for iMessage." I think that fixes things!

My phone number was ticket but greyed out and when i logged out of the email my messages would just not send

Tried pretty much all these options and everything was seeming hopeless


Chatted via apple support and the solution for me was to go to general- reset - reset all settings

( this doesnt delete any data or anything)

This reboots the phone then it worked fine!


Probably wont work for everyone but a suggestion

Thank you! Worked for me. So @SotongLuv's method was to log off your Apple ID by going to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > and then click Apple ID: xxxx@xxx.xxx and sign out. After that, turn off iMessage for a a few minutes then turn it back on and then sign back into your Apple ID. That's what I did and it worked

Hi guys! I was having this issue too and none of the above suggestions were working. I found that even though I had imessaging "off" on my iPad and "on" on my iPhone, my iPad had it preset to sending messages from my email. So try going to your iPad's (or alternate device's) settings, click messages, turn it on if it is off, and click "send and receive". Then you should be able to unselect your email from "you can be reached by iMessage at" and "start new conversations from". This fixed the issue on my iPhone for me. Hope this helps some of you too!

I had this issue briefly with my iPhone 6 (iOS 8.3) and found out how to fix it very easily.


Go to your iMessage settings (Settings<Messages)

The fifth option down the list should be "Send & Receive"


You should see your primary phone number listed in gray with one (or more) e-mail addresses below. If anything other than your phone number has a check mark next to it, it's being sent from that source in addition to your iPhone.


Just click your phone number and it should remove the check marks from the listed e-mail addresses, and voila!

I have had this same problem off and off for a while and what worked for me was making sure that all me devices that use iMessage have just the phone number checked to send and receive messages.

On iPhone/iPad it is under your settings as people listed above

On Mac (v. 10.10.3) it is under Messages > Preferences > Accounts > iMessage; you will uncheck all the emails and just leave the phone number.


Hope this helps anyone who was as lost as I was! 🙂

I have a 5c iOS 8.3. I've tried all the suggestions here and endured 5 hours of tech "help". Still nada. I cannot uncheck my email address, and my phone # is greyed out. I DO have "start new conversations ..."with my phone # checked. However, I don't have any other Apple devices-only an Apple ID (my email). Seems as if when I connected with iTunes was when my issues began. I can only send text msgs. if I enable cell data-not wifi. Until recently, I was able to send texts to others with an iPhone without using cell data. What changed?Anyone have a solution?

iMessage doesn’t use phone number

Those who have upgraded to iOS8 may also notice that the option to use their phone number to send iMessages doesn’t appear to be available. In Settings, the phone number is listed but you cannot select it because it is greyed out. This means that all iMessages would be sent only by email or iCloud ID. What you can do to solve this is to go to Settings and disable iMessage and Facetime. In Settings, go to General and scroll down to Reset and then select “Reset Your Network Settings”. After resetting, check that you are connected to Wi-Fi and enable iMessage and Facetime. Your phone number should now be available as an option to send iMessages.

I can send iMessages to the *phone numbers* of all my iPhone user contacts with the exception of two. Both are marked as iPhone next to their phone number in my contacts, their e-mail address that is registered to their iMessage account is also under the same contact info.


I have checked the settings of my iPhone and theirs. Under addresses they can be reached at both have their email address and cell phone numbers checked off. Under "start my conversations from" their phone number is selected. The same is the case for my own iPhone in both instances.


I can send iMessages to their email addresses. When they message me, they come through from their email addresses. When I send to them as text, they get it as an iMessage.


Still, I cannot send iMessages to their cell phone numbers.


Why??
