iMessage sent from email address rather than phone number...

I'm having similar problems with my iMessage update under iOS 5. When I send text messages to other iPhone users, it appears as iMessage and from my email address rather than my phone number. I went into Settings > Messages > Receive At, but there's no option to add my phone number. It keeps showing my Apple Account, which I registered under for iMessage and iCloud with my email address. It only allows me to add another email address. From what I can tell, non-iPhone users are still receiving my text messages from my number like regular. If I turn iMessage OFF, I'm sending regular text messages to all users. Anyone have a fix yet? I'm wondering if this was an Apple goof that won't be resolved until the next iPhone update.

Wait...I think I figured it out. When you click Receive At, click Apple ID and Sign Out. Once you've signed out, the Receive At turns to "Use your Apple ID for iMessage." I think that fixes things!

I've had success with this: start out in settings > messages > send & receive. In "send & receive" you should have the option to select your phone number or your email address. Select your phone number and imessages will be sent from your number rather than your email account, and fellow iphone users will now receive texts from your phone number.

cheers xx

I had the same issue. Even contacted Apple which they could not solve. I just figured it out. Lets say you were sending a message to 'Amy'. You type the letter A and Andrea pops up yet is not in your address book. Select Andrea as if you were going to write to her. Next to her name is a drop down arrow. Select "remove from chat". Problem solved. 😉

1. Go to settings, Icloud and delete account. Put your Apple id to delete but keep content in your Iphone.

2. Go to settings, itunes and appstore and click on your apple id and select sign out

3. Then go to imessage, send and receive, click on your apple id and select sign out

4. Do the same with facetime. At this point imessage and facetime is turned off and e-mail info and apple id are not set for appstore, icloud, imessage and facetime.

5. Power off your phone and wait for 10 minutes

6. Turn on your phone. Go to imessage and turn it on and wait for a couple of minutes to activate. DO NOT use your apple id for imessage because that's the reason the # does not register. After your # is ok then you can add another e-mail and sign in your icloud and appstore account.

When going onto your settings select messages, you will see your email address at the top of the page sign out of this it will not sign you out of iTunes or AppStore etc.. After you have done that select your phone number at send and receive once you have logged out this will enable you to send and receive your iMessages through your email..Good Luck

I changed my password for Apple ID and then my phone started sending email. I tried changing the 'you can be reached at' and it gave me a 'send new messages from' at my phone # after trying to delete the email address (which worked). So then I tried what MiaHolden98 suggested, signing out from apple id at your email address at the top of the page. It lives! 🙂 So thanks everyone for all the advice!

Excellent. This fixed my problem. I traveled overseas and set my iMessage and Facetime to a new number. Then upon returning to U.S.A, I could not get my overseas number to "go away". I turned off iMessage and Facetime. Turned iMessage back on and Apple fixed it's self. Asked me if I wanted to use my old U.S.A. number. Hope this helps someone else.

I had the issue so i called apple and at first she said you have to restore your phone and blah blah.. after a brief discussion and hold she came back and said....all you have to do is follow the steps...

1.) Go into settings

2.) "Messages"

3.) "Send & Receive" (if it says your email address) and click on it

4.) Click on your "Apple ID:" and select "Sigh Out" from the pop out box

5.) "Facetime"

6.) Click on "Apple ID:" and select "Sigh Out" from the pop out box

NOW....

7.) Go back into "Messages" and sign back in and select only your phone number and deselect your email address.

8.) Go back into "Facetime" and sign back in and you CAN select both, your email and phone number if you wish.

9.) DONE.

It seems the only thing you need to do is to go to Settings > Messages > iMessage. Go into Send and Receive, uncheck all email addresses under "You can be reached by iMessage at". Your phone number will be there but it will be greyed out. Uncheck all "Start Conversation From" addresses. Go back out to Messages window. iMessage will be turned off, turn it back on and go back into Send and Receive. And you should only see your phone number checked off. This should change your iMessages to being sent from your phone instead of your email address. No need to sign out of anything or restore anything.

epfenn29,

I had the same exact problem. I tried every solution that the apple community gave. Nothing was working. My Imessage would only send as SMS (when I turned it off) or from my email (when I turned it on and logged into my apple acct).

What worked for me was just to turn on Imessage. Log in to my apple acct. When it's on and it gives you the option to "receive as..." just UNCHECK YOUR EMAIL even if it doesn't give you the option to choose your phone number. This worked for me after several times of resetting, managing my apple account online and many "unsuccessful activation"

I hope this helps! 🙂
