iMessage sent from email address rather than phone number...

I'm having similar problems with my iMessage update under iOS 5. When I send text messages to other iPhone users, it appears as iMessage and from my email address rather than my phone number. I went into Settings > Messages > Receive At, but there's no option to add my phone number. It keeps showing my Apple Account, which I registered under for iMessage and iCloud with my email address. It only allows me to add another email address. From what I can tell, non-iPhone users are still receiving my text messages from my number like regular. If I turn iMessage OFF, I'm sending regular text messages to all users. Anyone have a fix yet? I'm wondering if this was an Apple goof that won't be resolved until the next iPhone update.

iPhone 4, iOS 5

Wait...I think I figured it out. When you click Receive At, click Apple ID and Sign Out. Once you've signed out, the Receive At turns to "Use your Apple ID for iMessage." I think that fixes things!

I'm having the same problem 😟

For me there is simply no such choice "phone number" at all - there is just "My email" and "Add another e-mail" as options.

But if I sign out and then sign in again there is a question "What would u like to use?" (or smth like that) when authorisation is done and two options: "My phone number" (which is gray but marked as selected) and "e-mail" (which is not gray and i can either select it or not). But the phone number just won't appear anyway. (If I unmark also an e-mail adress there isn't any choices except "Add new e-mail" in the end at all)

I've tried several solutions described here and still no luck.

Ofc iMessage itself works, but all my friends recieve my e-mail in a title instead of phone number. That's annoying =\

UPD:
Everything is working fine now. It's just me being impatient ;-)

Here's what I've done:
First of all I took this into a consideration:

"Give it a second! It's going to SPACE! Can you give it a second to get back from space?" (c)

Ofc it wasn't "a second", instead I had to wait for about 3 hours but now it's working fine with both appleID and phone number.

Just be patient)

Well I have no idea what the **** Apple was thinking in the recent updates, as I never had a problem with selecting the source of the imessages. There was a choice and it wasn't this 'fixed' problem with email addresses.

Apple why are you not allow the user the use their Apple ID where they want to rather than globally for every application? I hope this is fixed soon.

In addition it would be nice to (according to similar experiences) that we have a way of knowing if our contacts are in imessage mode BEFORE a text is sent. It is unfortunate that this great system has such a shortfall of being useful and/or possible cost effective after the fact.

I go to Phone and try to change my number and it doesn't let me. I noticed when it says it's trying to activate iMessage that the phone number has a country code. Howerever Apples ID website doesn't have an option to add one and under the Phone setting there isn't one either. I think this is the problem, but I can't seem to work around it.

iMessage is including the country code, but can't verify the number because every where else the phone number is listed, it doesn't have the country code.

i have solved this issue by restoring to ios 6.1.3 to my iphone 4s.

i tried every steps on this forum and google. then i found a way to activate imessage and facetime with following steps.

step 1: backup your device to itunes.

step 2: fresh restore your device with latest firmware.

step 3: while activating your device do not sign with your apple id-skip it.

step 4: let it activate your phone number first. start using iphone.

step 5: imessage and facetime will activate to your phone number.

step 6: restore you backup and you will see your phone number and apple id activated to imessage and facetime.

hope this will solve your problem.🙂

I have an iPhone 5, and recently lost my iMessage so I went to apple store and they set up a new apple ID for it and it all works fine however it's sending as my email address not my mobile number. I've tried everything all troubleshooting that has been posted on here and just won't let me select my number. in my receive at it has my email ticked and my number above it but it's grey shaded and I can't select it to give it a tick. I've signed out of my apple Id also thinking it would fall back onto my mobile number but it didn't all it did was cancel my iMessage and wouldn't let me use it. I don't know what to do and my iMessage setting stays on waiting for activation, been on that for days. I don't know what to do just want my iMessage back to my phone number not this silly email

SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME

I think I have figuered out something interesting.

Within Apple devices (iPads, iPodTouches, iMacs, iPhones, MacBooks, etc) you can use an email address to be reached at for (or recognized from):

- iMessage

- FaceTime

The latest iOS and OS have these functionalities.

These email addresses are normally your Apple ID, which you use for purchasing apps etc.

So if you have more than one device, you can end up with the same Apple ID addressing these devices, so you get one iMessage on all your devices, for instance.

However, you can 'manage' your Apple ID and add more alternative addresses there and use these (individually) per device you own.

You can normally make up a line of aliases (email adresses) at your provider.

So, For my iMac I have made an alias email address like this:

imac.<myname>@<myprovider>.com

And I have linked this within iMessage and FaceTime on my iMac as the ONLY connected email address.

This makes my device unique with an email address.

And now I can address this iMac individually trying to FaceTime it or send an iMessage to it.

You can follow this procedure for all your devices.

P.S. If you cannot build aliases at you provider, you can also use your gmail address for your first device and your hotmail address for the second device, etc.

However, you must be able to verify these addresses within your email account, as soon as you have linked them to iMessage or FaceTime.

So, make sure your Apple devices are linked uniquely to an email address in order to avoid multiple messages on all you devices.

if you go under settings and then go into imessage you have the ability to turn it off. Turn it off, then turn it back on, it will give you the option to use your phone number and your email address when you go back into the app, uncheck the email address. That should work.

Settings>iMessage>Turn off iMessage>Turn back on iMessage>Go to iMessage app>Uncheck use email address>Send message

iMessage sent from email address rather than phone number...
