How to keep myname@me.com when moving to cloud?

I've had an active mobileme email account for over a year on my daughter's family plan.

I installed iOS 5 on my iPad a couple days ago when it was first available. Yesterday I upgraded Lion on my iMac to 10.7.2. Then I tried to install iCloud. Contacts and Calendar seem OK, but email doesn't transfer nicely.

Apple says If you have an active MobileMe account when you sign up for iCloud, you can keep your me.com or mac.comemail address... http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4597.

Well, this is wrong, misleading, incomplete, or I've done something wrong :-). Elsewhere, Apple say: to move your email account from MobileMe to iCloud,

go to me.com/move. When I did that, it dropped me directly into 'find my devices', and it found my iPad, but not my iMac. When I try to move email, either on the iMac or iPad, it tells me I have to select a new email address. It says, velman@me.com is already in use, so I should select a new one. Suggests jvelman@me.com. Both my wife and I use this same address on the iPad -- we both have the same last name! but we have different initials. In addition, changing email addresses is a lot of bother.

I really don't want to select a new email address. Do I have to just wait till next year when MobileMe stops? Or will that even work?

Enough griping, other than this everything is pretty nice. Does someone have a way around this email address trap, or know of a contact who can help?

Thanks,

John Velman

I'm having the same issues JR. But I have finally untangled my mess for the time being. It seems like you have to keep your MM account for email, and if set up right (my problem), iCloud should handle the rest. If there is a way to bring your @me.com over to iCloud and extinguish MM forver from your Mac I cannot figure that out.

The key here is to set up (in Sys Prefs) your "iCloud" and "Mail, Contacts & Calandars" the right way. Make sure Address Book only displays your iCloud contacts by deleting the "On My Mac" contacts. That guarantees only those contacts go to iCloud. In iCal do the same. In the Prefs/Accounts, for both these apps, make sure that only the iCloud log in info is set, not MM. This is where I had issues. In Mail you can create a MM acount for your @me.com address like normal. The thing is to go back to "Mail, Contacts & Calandars" in Sys Prefs and de-select Contacts and Calendars.

Hope that helps!

Well, I'm more or less ok for now, but can't expain it all. I did things similar to what TomVCS says, but now I seem to have iCloud mail on my iMac, my old apple ID for iCloud on the iMac (I think), my old apple ID for purchases from iTUnes and App stores. My iCloud mobile.me mail shows up on my iPad, but it is not part of the iCloud setup (according to setup) on the iPad. Apparently the myname@me.com is going to both myname@me.com places. My calendar has two entrys for everythng, but my address book doesn't. Not sure about new calendar entries that I put in from one place or the other. Probably I'll go back to system prefs and delete the extra calendar.

Anyhow, I can live with this for now. I wonder what happens when mobileme vanishes?
