iPhone 3GS frozen/rebooting after iOS 5 update.

Hello all,

I updated my iPhone 3GS to iOS 5 last night. All seemed well until I noticed the restore was complete. The iPhone was frozen on the Home Screen. The flash of white the runs beneath the slide to unlock is frozen at different intervals everytime the phone reboots itself. I have tried restoring the phone multiple time. I am unable to perform a hard reset because the phone's sleep button is nonfunctional. When the phone decides to reboot itself, about every two minutes, I notice that for a split second it flashes to a gray screen with an iPhone in darker gray. There are words all over the screen but I am unable to read any of it before te phone resets. I think I see a "Peparing to Install" title on the screen, but that is a guess. Any ideas from anyone? I'm really at a loss of what to do.

Okay, I let the battery run down and when I plugged my iPhone back in it worked! I'm pretty lucky the battery ran down very fast with the constant resetting it was doing! Otherwise I would've been waiting a few days!

Hi,

I'm facing the same problem on my 3Gs after upgrade to iOS 5 and I've started feeling that iOS 5 is pathetic for 3Gs. Let me share my findings:

The reboot issue, I suspect, is related to the software part that handles RF capabilities of the iPhone 3Gs. Try this as a test:

1) When your iPhone 3Gs starts rebooting, try to reset "Enable 3G" (General -> Network - Enable 3G, turn OFF then turn ON again). Normally when this is reset, the iPhone should do a cell reselection within 5 seconds (you will see signals disappearing & appearing again) but when it's "sick" it will not make any cell reselection (no signals disappearing).

2) Try to send on your iPhone 3Gs an SMS when it's rebooting time & again. You shouldn't be surprized if this fixes the problem. But the problem may appear again.

I've observed that when the iPhone 3Gs has to reselect from one band to another (like GSM900 MHz to GSM1800 MHz band) or GSM to 3G-2100 MHz, it starts having a problem. Moreover, I'm not able to send any network command when the set malfunctions (like balance check, loading balance, etc - start with a * and end with #, eg *121#).

Me & my colleague did a test. First we tried to reset. Then we tried to call on the iPhone 3Gs. On callig mobile I could hear the ringing tone but iPhone 3Gs (destination) was silent like anything. Then we tried sending SMS to iPhone 3Gs; it got fixed and still fine (around 2 weeks now).

Hope it will help!

Still no remedy for this issue. I'm just waiting for another update from Apple. As I mentioned above, the only solution I know is that when an SMS is received on 3Gs, the problem is gone. So try it every time the phone 'misbehaves' 🙂 Further, whenever the battery goes below 30%, put the phone on charging. Don't let it drain. So hopefully you will not face this issue so frequently.

Hello, my brother had this same problem of the iPhone 3gs restarting cuz of the ios5. I tired enabling the 3G n dat but it only lasted for a few days them start rebooting itself again.... Try this method not sure how long it will last for but. Good so far.

General/reset.....Erase all data and settings.

On the iphone......Set up as a brand new iPhone.

Then log in with your apple i.d on your phone.

Once done, restore it from the pc and then sync ur backup with your apple I.d(if u hav 1) if u don't have back up saved it don't matter.

HOPE THIS HELPS YOU.

Because i know how frustrating it's been
