iMessage too slow sending text when it can't connect to iMessage

When you send an iMessage it works instantly, however iMessage is suddenly not available on a device the iPhone will try to send that iMessage for around 6 minutes before eventually sending a text message. This is a ridiculous situation where now instead of getting instant messages you can potentially be waiting for over 10 minutes to send a standard text instead of an iMessage. Is anybody else getting this problem?

I have noticed this as well, but the problem has been there since the upgrade. Also tried troubleshooting, adding more ids to the imessage settings.. still the same..

At this rate not sure if imessage is really a BBM alternative.
For the moment and till they sort out the issues, might need to stick with Whatsapp or something like that...

Just out of curiosity anyone found a fix/cause for this problem?

Hello,

Thanks for the reply.. tried the restart as well several times, but unfortunately no luck..

The problem is that there is not indication of when the messages to get stuck.. so you don't find out till minutes later of a failure and by that time the conversatoin has carried on, in an abstract way, with both parties not knowing what the other is talking about.. :-)

I've got several friends to test this on their iPhones on different networks and the problem is the same so it's not a network fault. It's iMessage taking too long to decide to send a text when an iMessage is no longer available on the recipients device. The more I use it the I've noticed the times can vary from 4 minutes to 15 minutes to send the text. If this is happening both ways in a conversation between two iMessage enabled devices then what is normally a 2 minute text conversation can now become a 30 minute exchange.

The only cure I have found is once you have sent the message and it hangs (doesn't displayed delivered), of you touch and hold on the message if gives you two options copy and send as text message. Select send as text message and it sends it instantly, not a perfect cure but for now but it does work.

Hope this helps :)

I have this same problem on my iPhone 4, but iMessage works flawlessly on my iPad 2. Even if I have my phone and iPad in the same room on the same wifi, iMessages come in and go out much faster on the iPad. Sometimes messages will arrive two or three minutes earlier on my iPad. So its not just a sending issue. This is so frustrating! I don't understand why iMessage works so well on the iPad and not the phone even when theyre on on the same wifi. Ugh!

Something I noticed just now and that is imessage is working a lot faster. Dare I say almost as fast as BBM (Blackberry Messenger)

Not sure to the reason but there are two possibilities:

1) My icloud and mobile me emails were different on my phone, so I set up the icloud to be the same as mobile me userid

2) The second thing was that I just updated my ios to 5.01 on the phone.

Since I didn't try imessage after piont 1, I am not sure which one fixed it.

Would be interested in knowing if anyone else has seen performance improvements on imessage after updateing to 5.01.

Thanks

I updated to 5.0.1 last night & I can confirm that the issue is still here. I'm confused what the problem is. I sent an iMessage to one friend, and that has yet to notify me it's been delivered, yet i sent another iMessage to another friend and that's already been replied to. I'm guessing the problem is iMessage taking too long to decide the iMessage isn't going to go through and sending a text message instead? I don't know.... But apple needs to do something about this because I'm tempted to turn iMessage off as regular SMS is much, much faster. 😟

The issue still exists for me as well. I just keep the network turned off while I'm on wifi and there are no issues, but if the network is on (regardless of whether I am connected to wifi) this problem exists.

Also, 5.0.1 didn't fix the keyboard split issue with the ipad 2 in iMessage where the split keyboard covers the conversation, even when docked to the bottom.

I was pretty disappointed these two issues weren't resolved

I have been having the same problems all of you have been having, and my husband suggested going to the apple store, but the apple tech assured me it was the network, and if i just reset my network settings, my iMessage would work again. Well, that worked for about 1 message. He saw it send and deliver properly, but the second i walked out of the apple store to send another iMessage, it sent as an SMS. i agree, it is very frustrating waiting for your iphone to send the iMessage, and 5-10 minutes later it shows up as a text message. The apple tech also told me that they are coming out with another software update in the next few weeks to solve this problem, because the iOS 5.1 did absolutely nothing to it, and it probably made it worse. i just hope they fix this problem before i throw my phone out of the window.

Same problem here, sometimes an iMessage takes 15 to 20 minutes to be delivered and when you don't realise, the other party gets the message at the wrong time, causes confusion all round. How can I switch off this Apple crap and just send normal texts? Anyone know? I don't need to reset my 3GS as it locks up virtually very day since the IOS5 upgrade! As a software development manager, I'm sick of this flaky Apple software, even Microshaft works better than this!!
