"Raise to Speak" not working on iPhone 4s

I got my Iphone 4s today. Everything works fine except for the "Raise to Speak" feature. I have it turned on in the Siri settings but there is nothing that I can do to get Siri to start when I raise the phone to my ear. Really frustrating. I have been on the phone with Apple's support and so far nothing that they proposed worked. We tried rebooting the phone, turning the phoe off and on again, and turning the raise to speak setting on and off. Anybody having the same problem?

Hi,

I have the same "Raise to Speak" problem like most of you. It does not work constantly and I am asking myself is this a hardware problem of the proximity sensor or just a software issue?

What sometimes happen when I try the "Raise to Speak" feature is that the Spotlight search gets activated which is also very annoying.

Hope Apple fixes this issue or at least tells us what it's all about.

Have you tried my suggestion of moving it abruptly / quickly to your ear? If you move it slowly it won't activate and if your ear or cheek touches the screen then it will click things and activate spotlight search as an example...

I don't think there is anything to fix. The product works perfectly. They probably have to do it this way to avoid Siri accidentally coming on.

iPhone 4s user here. In addition to the correct response about activated Siri via the "Raise to Speak" setting where it works sitting down with a bent arm, I have observed not only the rotation of the arm but also the tilt of the iPhone. I noticed that when I talk on the phone, I tilt it a bit. Siri activates even better if the Iphone is tilted between 15 and 90 degrees depth wise, and swung up from the "bent arm" position. Hope it helps any user in solving this minor issue.

Hi,

since my last post on November 12th it seems to got a bit better. Now Siri works at 70 % when trying to activate it compared to 40 % at the beginning.

I am not sure if it's just the way I am holding and moving the phone or if iOS 5.0.1 has some fixes included.

Nevertheless this is still to low, as activating Siri should work at 99 %.

I've been meaning to get back to this discussion. I was having the same problem weeks ago. As it turned out, I was holding the phone in a "too vertical" orientation. Instead I learned to just casually put it right up to my ear at a slight angle (20-30 degrees). Also, when I'm in a text message, it will not activate unless I have the keyboard up. If the keyboard isn't up, bring it up, then raise the phone at a casual, slight angle and hopefully it will work. You have to understand that I was at the forefront of saying this feature was busted, but now it works 90% of the time.

Raise to speak seems to be very inconsistent for me. Basically it works sometimes and dosn't work other times. I have followed some of the posted responses on here but they really don't work all the time <40%. It's really frustrating that this functionality doesn't seem to work for me. Is there anyone that can help improve my inconsistencies? 😠

It's not sensitive enough to the amount of light change. It was a weird coincidence that I found this but... I have longer dark hair almost black... I found that if I just rise my phone and put it over my ear there's a much lower chance of the proximity sensor kicking of Siri... but... I rise my phone and put it over my hair that covers my ear Siri kicks in all of the time. Again just conjecture... so any iPhone 4s owners with long dark hair give it a shot.

Thank you for sharing this function, for the R&S function, I thought it's just for wake SIRI up, I never know that I can do it on voice typing, since I think it's the same thing like SIRI, I just never try R&S on voice typing!

I hope that SIRI can support Chinese soon and so on voice typing, that the SIRI user in Taiwan(or China) will be very happy about it.

Thnaks again.

absolutely right....i tried it for few times it did not work then i swing it right in front of my chest all the way to ear....then it really works...thanks and right solution man....but i want to add something more in it which i found...if u recently closed siri and then do this process it will work like a charm but if u closed it 3 minutes before it will still give u problem i think

i check it many time again and now i really found that it does not seem to matter much on the movement but it really matters if the lock screen light in ON...i tried with turning lite OFF and it never works even for once but when i turn on the light it really works almost every single time ...but iam not gona change my phone just because of this reason because they dont give a new phone and they just give a refurbished or repaired phone most of the times......or i dont know if it works for all the people when they turn the lock light ON first? or is it really a problem? lol
