"Raise to Speak" not working on iPhone 4s

I got my Iphone 4s today. Everything works fine except for the "Raise to Speak" feature. I have it turned on in the Siri settings but there is nothing that I can do to get Siri to start when I raise the phone to my ear. Really frustrating. I have been on the phone with Apple's support and so far nothing that they proposed worked. We tried rebooting the phone, turning the phoe off and on again, and turning the raise to speak setting on and off. Anybody having the same problem?

Here's how to trigger Siri via Raise-to-Speak:

1) Turn the phone's screen on (you don't have to unlock it)

2) Holding the phone so the screen is facing you (any angle is fine as long as the screen is facing you) like you are reading from it

3) With a medium/quick motion, bring the phone up to your ear like you would do when you are taking a phone call

4) Wait for the Siri beep

5) Talk!

Hope this helps!

Let's face it, the 'raise-to-speak' feature barely works. It requires overly precise movements to be reliable. I've spent hours practicing to find the perfect movement(s), gestures, speed, angles, with only mixed results. Apple, I beg you to work on fixing this feature, it's a nice idea but it's too difficult to use, which conflicts with the user-friendly philosophy that most of your products embody.

psicom is correct. Activating Siri this way is tricky, and not at all intuitive.

You have to start with the phone in front of you, held parallelto the floor (ie. held flat horizontally), then bring it up to your ear so it's vertical with a normal, smooth motion. Your hand must rotate from the horizontal to vertical position of the phone.

If you start with the phone vertically in front of your face, then move it over to your ear Siri will NOT activate.

They key is starting with the phone held horizontally. The motion from horizontal to vertical is necessary. It uses the motion sensor as well as the proximity sensor.

This is illustrated on page 39 of the iPhone User Manual. I recommend you download the manual and look at the illustration and it will be crystal clear:

@aaron330i: Wow, thank you. Something as simple as holding the phone to my left ear worked right away, versus the right ear.

@wnicolle: Thanks. I notice using the right ear works every time, if I first pull my hair back out of the way -- I have very long hair.

@Jason Scott5: Thanks, using a very quick motion up to the ear works, rather than slow motion.

Thanks for everyones tips.
