IOS-5 battery power drain issue

Did somebody notice a major power drain issue after iOS5 upgrade on iPhone4? Last night at midnight, it was ~90% charged. In the morning, it was 37% charged. By noon, it was dead. I didn't make even 1 call during this time. Connected to Wi-Fi at home and strong 3G signal. Bluetooth is off, location services are off, all that stuff. The same phone's battery would last for 40 hours with my normal usage with IOS 4.3.5. Anybody knows if any specific feature of iOS5 is causing this battery drain?

I have an Iphone 4. Turning off the things I wasn't using only made the battery life slightly better. It was when I deleted out my emails and reset my network (which will reboot the phone) that the battery life returned to normal for me. After putting my emails and wifi passwords back in, the battery drain stopped. I updated to the new 5.0.1 yesterday so I will see if anything changed.

As far as turning things off, I turned off bluetooth because I don't use it. I turned off location for those apps that don't need it. (angry birds, etc) I never allowed push notifications to begin with. I use fetch once an hour. I only have missed calls show in my lock screen.

no, we didn't buy these devices just to turn off the fun stuff. But by turning off the stuff we don't use and turn on others only when we need them seems to help a little. Keep the things important to you on. Everybody is different.

I upgraded my IPhone 4 to OS 5 was fine at first but then I started playing with new features ooops. Now I can have a 100% charge and dead to where it turns itself off by 2pm. I am pretty sure it is GPS based problem as at first week with o/s 5 no problem and I've always had push, etc on and actually have always kept it on 3G.

It was not until I put in a reminder in tasks and set it to remind me by location did the drain start killing me. I have satisified the all reminders in the tasks and the little GPS arrrow went away again bet my battery starts working again but we'll see if it works will make another post in a couple of days and then find a way to let apple fix that app "part of the o/s 🙂"

I agree with baj1959 on that: the email notifications are badly managed on this site, much worse than on the previous version. Here, you have to either restrain from posting on a given issue, or accept to have your inbox flooded with everybody's response to the original post. There should be a more selective choice, especially since most of us follow (and post on) only a bunch of threads, not whole portions of the forum.

Back to this battery issue: I'm now down to 57% on my Friday night charge. Granted, I haven't used my phone much over the weekend, or yesterday, for that matter, but with iOS 5.0, I'd have had to recharge at least twice over the same period. WiFi on, BT off, most localization services on except Where's My iPhone, and (under System Services) Time Zone and Compass Calibration.

To me, iOS 5.0.1 was a blessing. By the way, I seldom restart my phone, about once every two weeks. When it starts to lag a little, I force a reboot, and that's that.

Yea I have the same problem but with my iPad 2 3G. Usually the 3G is turned off and just using wifi for a while. I used to not charge my iPad for 2 days with full brightness and all apps running . Now just last night I watched the season finale off lost the series on Netflix and I always watch movies and watch shows off Netflix all the time and my first movie since iOS 5 totally wiped my battery out. Charged it before I watched it. It was 100% and when I was done watching it , it was 25% only 106 min long and. Not very long compared to me watching over 5 movies on Netflix over wifi before iOS 5 now my limit is one movie before it needs to be charged or I won't get very far in my second movie. I hope apple really fixes this problem it's very frustrating, and hope they notice this problem soon or I'll have to switch to some other tablet due to the lack of battery life iOS has brought to us. If you're still reading this. Even music drains my battery. Usually I'd go through my whole library while falling alseep to music and only lose 8% battery going through the night now I tried it and lost over 25% - 35%. This problem is just not me. All my friends at school have the same problem with there apple products. Including iPad iPhone and iPod touch. I was just joking before about switching tablets. I love apple but this is a big problem they need to fix. Hope this message gets heard of :). Thank you and have a nice day! , Thomas

Was about ready to give up completely on my 3gs after reading and trying everything was suggested here. Had replaced battery one week ago, updated to ios 5.0.1 got great battery life for about 1 day draining 10-15% over a period of 6hrs in standby, then after syncing and updating some apps (cannot remember which) my phone would drain power in about 2hrs in standby.

Tried everything suggested here. Turned location services off, all notifications off, reset network svcs, deleted all email accounts and reistalled them, turned off GPS time zone setting, switched off wifi itunes syncing, powered to 100% and then reset phone, reset phone through itunes etc etc.

Nothing worked. Nothing at all. Last step: turned push off. Lost only 3% charge over 7hrs standby. Now turned push on, some notifications on, some location services. Lost about 6% in 15 mins of use and 2.5hrs standby.

Huge improvement. Will keep you posted.

I had it on fetch overnight, now swithed it back to push and with 35mins of usage (no calls), and 4hrs of standby lost about 6% of charge. Somehow, some function must have been draining the battery.

I have perfect reception (clear sighline to cell tower) and perfect wifi reception. Seems that switching push to fetch and back to push reset something. It's the only step that seemed to have made the difference.

Your battery performance seems stellar. Do you have a 3gs? notifications off, location services off?

Nov 17, 2011 7:45 AM in response to RakeshPDX

Since I changed from push to fetch, yes it is.

I have a 4 with 5.0 iOS

Notifications are Manual

Location Services are off until I need them, then I turn them on

wifi is on but ask to join networks is off

bluetooth is off

iCloud is off

All push notifications off

I know some feel that having these features off defeats the purpose of having a smart phone. But really, until you need it, why have it on is what I say?

Not to keep Apple from correcting the issue, however.
