IOS-5 battery power drain issue

Hi Maraldo, this is what I did. I am currently on 4.0 with 5.0 iOS

Settings / General / Reset / Reset network settings. This will turn your phone off then on

Settings / Mail / Contacts / Calendars / Click Push new data and turn push Off. This will change to fetch which you can place on a schedule. Mine is on every 15 minutes but you can set every 30, hourly or manually.

Then turn your phone off, fully charge for 15 minutes and turn back on.

I had immediate response and now maintain a full charge for most of the day.

IN addition I have

Location Services Off - Settings / Locations Services / Off (You can turn on as you need them)

Wifi On - Seetings / Wi-fi / On with Ask to join networks "off"

Thanks for your fast response. Will give it a try tonight and let you know tomorrow if it worked. If yes, I owe you a few points or a beer? I have also deleted the iCloud and hope that with the next update, I can fully benefit from the new iOS5!

A new update 5.02 is to come out be the end of next week for more battery fixes.

Solution to all the trouble...

I had the same problem with my 3GS and iOS 5.01. The last 2 days I have been playing around, switching things on and off, resetting network settings, etc., it didn't help. Until last night...I deleted my iCloud account completely. The battery after having used the iPhone for 3 hours now only dropped 3%!! Is this magic or what!?

Please give it a try, delete your iCloud account and let me know your experiences...

I never had any problem on my iPad or iTouch using IOS-5.0. After the IOS-5.1 Patch my iPad went from 100% to 12% overnight without being used and I've had to recharge my iTouch twice so far today.

I don't believe in threatening to buy something else, but I also believe that I should not have to keep changing settings and disabling things in order to use my products. I bought them for those features and I'm not going to turn them off.

Apple, please fix this again.

What has probably happened to you is a long standing problem where just the act of upgrading can cause excessive battery drain after the upgrade, regardless of what you upgraded to. This has been reported from some users with EVERY upgrade over the past 4 years. As many who have upgraded to 5.0.1 have reported that it helped the battery drain problem this is more likely your problem, rather than a flaw in 5.0.1. The fixes have also been the same for 4 years, and are well documented in the forums. The principle is to identify the app that is stuck in a loop as a result of being interrupted during the update process.

Some of the common solutions have been posted in this very thread. The solution is NOT to turn off useful features; it is to find the misbehaving app (which is frequently the email app).

I upgraded my Iphone 4 to ios5 few days ago and since then it's been plugged to charger most of the times. I was thinking about there might be an application which is draining the battery, I deleted few applications but it didn't help. Finally, I thought of googling it and came across this discussion. I hope Apple people are already working on this issue. Let's hope that this get sorted as soon as possible. I request to Apple family to solve this problem, so that we can continue to enjoy the best smart phone experience.😉

This worked for me as well. I had upgraded to a 4S from the backup file of my old iPhone4 via iTunes. Battery life was horrible and 5.0.1 made it worse. Usage/standby times were the same and the phone ran hot so it seemed to be stuck in a loop. Last night I had charged it to 100%, killed all the background apps and left it in "standby" overnight. Phone was dead this morning. After charging again I was about to go nuclear with a clean install but decided to delete the iCloud account, power cycle and reconfigure iCloud - battery is fine now. Anybody using iCloud with a battery issue should try deleting the account then resync.

So here is my dilemma. My wife's 3Gs crashed after the iOS5 update and the battery drained. I battery life was nil, could never get going correctly again after the battery drained completely. So I sent the phone in to have the battery changed. After all, the phone had quite a few charge / discharge cycles on it, and the battery was not in top shape before the upgrade. Anyway, Apple sent me back a 3Gs phone that was either completely new or referbished to look brand spanking new with iOS 4.3.3 on it. Synced it right up and it works fine. Battery lasts a long time and everything works like expected.

So here is the question to everyone in this thread. Do I dare upgrade the replaced phone to iOS5??? Or should I just leave well enough alone for now? Getting the phone did take 3 weeks and a couple of phone calls, and my wife is afraid to give it back to me to update. I am kind of gun shy.

It’s ridiculous.I can’t normally use my iPhone 4 anymore…It dies faster than I push any button:(

It lookslike Wi-Fi module don’t go to “standby mode” when it has to.

Telephonemodule also doesn’t work properly – sometimes when dial number it just “freeze”, sometimes It shows “full bars” without nameof the Carrier and you can’t call to anyone…

I followed the steps listed above this morning and all seems to be fine now. I'll monitor it for the next few days but it's been 8 hrs now and no noticeable depreciation of battery power like yesterday. I don't know what that upgrade to the ios 5 does to the older iPhone 4 but suffice it to say that it nearly drove me crazy. Last night I charged it 100 percent and then unplugged it to let it sit idle over night. When I awoke there was not enough juice to even power on the phone. I followed the steps, deleted the email accounts and restarted and then added them back in and so far, cross fingers!, everthing is back to normal. Battery holding strong even after 3 or 4 phone conversations and a few sent and read emails. Thanks for the tip, HayriC. Much appreciated. And happy Thanksgiving,everyone.

Finally found a solution that was easy and worked for me. I reset my iPad, deleting all data and settings so it was empty, then restored from iTunes and it is working fine now. Go figure?

I may have found something. I had Twitter disabled in my notifications, but got a tweet today that popped up on my home screen. Didn't know I had this enabled. At the bottom of the Twitter notification settings is the home scrren toggle. Since disabling this, battery life seems better. Considering there is no setting for frequency of checking for tweets, it appears the phone is continually connecting to wifi to check for new tweets.

I have an Iphone 3gs and the battery was draining before my eyes, and the unit even got hot in the process, even when the phone was not being used. I completely solved my own problem. We use Lotus Notes at work so I have Lotus Traveller on my device. I deleted my traveller profile and re-created it and that totally solved the issue. I had tried everything prior to this above. I know this only helps Notes users, but it was definitely the fix for me. We run Notes Server 8.53 for the the Traveller service.
