Siri Won't Remember Relationships

Title says it all. Anytime I ask Siri to text my girlfriend, it asks who my girlfriend is and if it should remember the assocation. I give it both answers, and the next time I want to text my girlfriend I have to go through the same ordeal.

How are the relationships stored? Are they part of Contacts? If so, I think you forgot to get the feature to work with Exchange servers. All of my contacts are stored in Office 365, not in Address Book or any other offline format.

Thanks a lot gedackt825. I was just going crazy but I knew it was because of my Facebook contact. Just didn't know how to get things back to the way they were. So I just removed the Facebook settings (not the app). Then I created a contact just as suggested by you (in iCloud) and voila. I could once again teach Siri who's my girl friend and who's my dad and mum. Thanks again!

I have this problem, more with making phone calls. Before iOS 10 I had no problem telling Siri to call my doctor. Now, this happens with every single one of my medical providers. I can even attempt to tell Siri to call my doctor by the actual provider name, and instead, the algorithm search is local areas and pulls up information, including the map, for my doctor. I've tried everything! Even to the point where I've called Apple Support. This is so frustrating, particularly because I'm a disabled individual with neurological issues that includes having tremors. I have just simply had enough. Honestly, to the point where I have almost ( operative word being "almost")

Had the same issue here because I setup my Google Apps account via Exchange so my contacts and calendar would sync. It appears that accounts setup with Exchange don't have the necessary "father", "mother", "sister", etc. fields to accomodate Siri, only "spouse", "assistant", and "manager".

My workaround was to create a single contact, me, in the iCloud address book which does allow for those "father", "mother", etc. relationship fields. I then linked those fields for my father, mother, sister, etc. to contacts in my Google Apps/Exchange address book. It's a bit complicated and this functionality should be in accounts setup with Exchange, but I haven't had any problems with Siri "forgetting" my relationships since.

Last step is to make sure Siri is pulling "My Info", under Settings > General > Siri, from that single contact you created for yourself in the iCloud address book.

I don't think it is just an Exchange issue. I'm using iCloud to sync my contacts and I'm having trouble getting Siri to pick up who my father is. The entry is set up properly in my contact database, but Siri doesn't seem to recognize it.

However! Siri consistently knows who my mother is. Go figure.

In my case he is a "junior" and I am a "third". Perhaps the similarity of the names is throwing it off.

And to make matters worse, when I ask to send a text to "First_Name Last_Name Junior", I get a text message ready to send to myself with the word "Junior" as the body of the text message!

It seems the recognition engine needs some serious tweeking for even basic relationship and naming issues.

They have a long way to go. This is most certainly a Beta project.

There is a bug, but it can be easily worked-around.

The Contact entry of you has a list of "Relationships," which is where Siri stores these Relationships. If you sync your Contacts with Outlook, Exchange, and other services (maybe Gmail?), your Contact entry is not formatted to support all of the Relationships.

To work around this:

  • Create a new Contact
  • The new Contact must be created as an "iPhone" or "iCloud" contact, depending on whether you turned on iCloud
  • The new Contact must be you... enter your name and contact info
  • At the bottom of the Contact info, you can select "Link Contact", which you can use to link the contact you just created with the Contact you sync with Outlook or Gmail. This is optional, but useful.
  • Save your Contact.
  • Open Settings and tap General, then Siri
  • Tap My Info and select the Contact you just created of yourself. Make sure you selected it from "iCloud" or "iPhone."
  • This only applies to the Contact entry for yourself. You don't need to modify the Contact entry for your mother and other Relationships.

It takes less time to do this than to explain this. I hope I was clear enough. Siri can use the following relationships:("Call My...")

  • mother
  • father
  • parent
  • brother
  • sister
  • child
  • friend
  • spouse
  • partner
  • assistant
  • manager

You can add customized labels, but the customized labels don't seem to work with Siri.

From an older post; not sure if this helps in Exchange:

If you do not already have one, you need to make a contact for yourself in Contacts.

When you edit that contact, one of the options is to Add Field (it is way down at the bottom just above the Delete Contact button.

When you click Add Field, one of the options is to add Related People. You can then add all kinds of relationships...wife, husband, boyfriend, girlfriend, spouse, partner, mother, father, child, friend, assistant, etc.

After you have saved all your info in your contact, go to Settings > General > Siri and make sure that your contact is the one selected under My Info.

This way, when you say to Siri "call my wife", Siri will look at your contact to see who you have saved under the relationship field "wife".

Yes, Pvonk, you explain how it is SUPPOSED to work, but if your Contact was synchronized with Outlook or Exchange or another service, it will not be able to store the relationship for "My Mother" and so forth. It's a bug with how iPhone stores Contacts.

The workaround I posted above solves the problem without side-effects.
