wifi sync need a true wifi connection?

I have not been able to connect my iphone or ipad to wifi sync. I have the latest updates and have checked the box for wifi sync and have had several successful cable syncs. I have rebooted everything and router. My question is does my desktop computer need a true wifi connection to the router? Right now it is connected by an ethernet cable and my devices by wifi.

iPad 2, Windows 7

I suspect that my reason for wifi sync failing is the same. My "home" iTunes resides on my Mac Pro which is connected to a Time Machine via ethernet. The Mac Book, iPhone, and iPad connect to the network via wifi. If I'm reading your post correctly, my Mac Pro is also not a true wifi connection. In the past, this made a difference setting up an AirPort Extreme from the Mac Pro. I had to set it up with an ethernet connection, then turn it loose on the wireless network. Once the connection was established, the Mac Pro was able to print to the wirelless printer. However, the Mac Pro did not fully behave as a wireless device by way of connection to the router. Does anyone have any experience with a similar setup? (Base computer to router via ethernet then wireless to everything else.)

As has already been said it does not matter that your computer is wired to your router or that it connects via WiFi. It is on the same local network and is accessible for wireless syncing. I have precisely this connection and it works fine.

Neviter:

I can confirm that a combination of wifi and cable connections on the same network can work. At least on my system. After checking out a few other discussions, I found a lot of people that say it just works but a number of other people with mixed results.

Here's a pretty long one.

Some say it doesn't work. Then it does. Then it doesn't. After following some leads from this discussion, I found that my Mac Pro does not initially recognise my iPhone. However, if I shut the phone off, then turn it back on, it pops up on iTunes. This has consistently been the case after several reboots. I can confirm its address in the AirPort utility and even ping the phone, but it will not show up in iTunes after rebooting the computer unless I turn the phone off, then back on.

Hope this helps with your setup. I'm going to monitor the above discussion to see what develops. Good luck.

Thanks Gary11...

I appreciate you confirming what you did about connecting with an ethernet cable. I am really at a loss to find anything else to troubleshoot and I think it is just a glitch with the software. Wi-fi syncing is the only thing not working and honestly with the icloud syncing becomes less important.

It just puzzles me that I set up home sharing in under 5 seconds and wifi syncing just doesn't appear for me.

I will keep reading the discussion boards. Thanks for all your help...
