iPhoto '11 [9.2 (626)] crashes when trying to import photos

I've read a number of posts about the updated version of iPhoto crashing, but before I follow some suggestions (like uninstalling 3ivx) I'd like to be sure I'm in the same boat.

I'm totally current on Lion, iOS5, iPhoto, and everything else. I'm awaiting my new iPhone 4S which should be delvered any moment.

I connected my iPhone 4 to sync, and there were two photos to import. iPhoto seemed to open just fine after the update, said it needed to update the library, and all looked fine.

When I tried to import those two photos off the phone it crashed. I sent the crash report to Apple, and tried again. Same thing. Tried once more, same thing. Then I tried emailing the photos to myself and saving them to the desktop and importing them that way. Again, a crash.

iPhoto did launch itself when I connected the iPhone 4.

What is the problem here, and will Apple likely release a fix for it. I don't recall why I have 3ivx on my computer and if I'll miss it when it is gone but if not, I'm happy to uninstall it. I'd rather not have to get into restoring my library from my last Time Machine backup (last night), or dumping iPhoto and having to reinstall it. I'm not totally up on libraries and identities etc.

If you need the actual crash report I'm sure I can trigger another one and paste it in here.

I had exactly the same problem - iPhoto 11 crashing on all imports, completely unuseable. And no 3divx installed. I got a new MB Pro with Lion pre-installed, and the data was migrated from the Snow Leopard machine (which did not have 3dvix either) via firewire.

In my case, the problem were apparently some "odd" ICC profiles in ~/Library/ColorSync/Profiles. In particular, there were some manually created "named colour" profiles - not something most people have in their profile folder, I guess. Apparently, these profiles confused iPhoto so much that it was not able to import any single photo (the crash log made it obvious that something relating to ColorSync was the problem). Once I removed these profiles (which were valid profiles, according to ColorSync.app - just not RGB ones), everything went smoothly.

So in addition to the 3dvix issue, it would seem that iPhoto, even in the latest builds, has some flaky ICC profile code. Named colour profiles are not very common, but their presence should not bring an app like iPhoto, which has no business accessing them in the first place, down.

I have this freeze and it's really annoying. Apple could at least answer or provide work around...Any hints ? The stuff describe in this post does not help, I dont have 3dvix or odd icc profile. I guess the bug is triggered by some cache issue or something else.

I am starting to be disapointed by this os it's supposed to be less buggy and have a better experience than other os. It's not better than my previous other os (linux/windows).

Humm I dont think so, I was able to get the picture from a file manager from my phone. It excludes the damaged cable. I was able to import picture to iphoto from picture on my local disk, plus I rebuild the database launching Iphoto holding cmd key. So the problem clearly appear only when I connect my device and Iphoto try to get picture on it

I have this problem with iPhoto crashing for several months now. It occasionally stops and starts again.

My crash logs do not mention anything like 3vix or perian (though I tried everything suggested here with no luck).

Please have a look. What could I possibly remove from my system to help it?

Create a new thread for a new issue.

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on seven different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary from version to version and OS to OS. So before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Things like:

- What version of iPhoto.

- What version of the Operating System.

- Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?

- Did it ever work properly?

- Are there error messages?

- What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.

Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
