iPhone 4S camera not working ("Shutter" remains closed in app)

Same here!! Is this for every phone or did we just get lemons?

Same issue here. Front facing works but not rear facing. I have 32gb white. Wife got 16gb black and hers is fine. Both from Verizon. Is everyone having issues with only white? I guess I won't get to avoid the apple store crowds afterall

Interesting. I dont think this is a hardware issue. I have had my iPhone 4 for over a year and have no problems with the camera until i did the iOS 5 upgrade. Sounds like buggy firmware. Will be interesting to find out why it only seems to impact a subset of devices.

Same issue here - pre-order 4S 64GB Black. Front camera works, rear camera doesn't sometimes stays on shutter sometimes goes to a mode that looks like it's working, but image is black. 3rd party camera apps either won't launch or provide generic error.

I'd rather not restore and re-sync my 32GB of data if that's not going to help!

Mine is a 32GB White 4S, so I don't think this is model specific.

Originally front, but now both after front died

I'm replying to my own mail but I got an e-mail from someone who wants to keep track of model, capacity, carrier, and which cameras not functioning.

Mine is a 16GB black that I ordered from Apple and received Friday. AT&T is the carrier and no camera works.

Update - I restored to factory and set up as new phone. Camera works fine. I'm now restoring from my backup earlier today and we'll see if it restores the problem back onto the phone.

I think we can confirm this is a software issue. I just did a reset on the phone and now BOTH cameras work. I even attempted to brick the camera and it still worked.

I backed everything up to iCloud before the reset manually, including photo stream.

I have the same problem, but I found while on hold with Apple, that if I access the camera from the lock screen while on a call, both cameras works fine everytime. Does that mean its a software issue?

Update 2 -

1: restored to factory, set up as new phone, then camera worked fine - took a couple pictures and a video to be sure - also swtiched between front and back, etc.

2: Then restored from my backup, and now everything works as it should.

For those of you waiting on a genius appointment, try this process, using the camera in between restores to ensure its function. Dunno why, may help.

I was in verizon for 40 minutes and they couldn't fix anything. Can I restore and "set up as a new phone" from home? I am not about to wait 2 weeks for a replacement.

I have also started to experience this with my iPhone 4 since downloading the iOS 5 software. It will still take the photo, you just dont know what it looks like beforehand.
