iCloud/iPad 2 error: "user name or password is incorrect" when I try to sign into iCloud.

When trying to sign in to iCloud on iPad2/iOS5 I receive User name or password is incorrect dialogue box w/ and "ok" bar. The screen freezes at this point and then it just spins "verifying" at the top. The only way to clear it seems to be turning it off. The same login/password worked on iPhone 4 and MacBook Pro. iPad is upto date. Any thoughts?

Hi Paul -

Well I finally chatted w/ someone at apple and was able to resolve it. First I am going to tell you what they told me, then I am going to tell you what I would do different.

I already had iOS5 loaded

They had me go to Settings>General>Reset>Erase all content and settings

After I did all that it still wouldn't accept the login/password.

That is when we discovered that I hadn't set the iphone right to back up to the cloud so there was nothing there for it to open.

Next they had me back up my iPhone to the cloud. (that took about an hour). Once it was done I went back to the iPad, you have to put some stuff in like country, blah blah blah, you are looking for the back up to iCloud, computer or iTunes. Select iCloud and from there it took about 5 minutes and everything was up and running.

What I would do differently - I would not reset the iPad. I didn't loose anything I can't replace but my pad desktop is a mess and I have to fix all that again. I would do the iPhone back up and then once that was done try to log into the iCloud again using the settings>iCloud. If that didn't work I would do the steps above because it did work.

Back up on iPhone: Settings>iCloud>Storage and Backup>Backup Now.

Good Luck!

I too was having the same problem. I seemed to have fixed it. Not exactly sure how...so here is the events that took place. I have two apple id's...one for icloud that was previously a mobile me...and one for the itunes store. I tried to log in with my store apple id and it actually worked without freezing up. I'm assuming it created and icloud account for that apple id. I didn't want to use that id but I now knew that it will log in. So, I tapped to delete the account. It warned me that anything on icloud will be gone...blah blah. Told it to do it. During the deletion something odd happened. My mobile me account setings from mail popped up. It showed mobile me breifly then the wording changed to icloud. It asked me to confirm something about completing migration. I said ok and when the process was complete I said done and was sitting in the mail preferences with all my mail accounts. I then went back to icloud and tried the me.com apple id again. This time it worked as expected.

So, I'm guessing the problem may be related to my previous mobile me mail account settings not migrated fully to icloud. You may want to pull that up and see if it gives and message about migration to icloud. Or reproduce my experiment and see what happens.

Yes, I confirm your same solution! thank you!

I was like you with an apple ID (old mobile me) and a second apple ID for App Store.

The problem was resolved when I've opened the mail setting

of my Mobile Me account on my iPad.

After few second it change automatically from mobile me to iCloud and when I came back to the iCloud setting

on the specific setting menu all was ok and he was connected with the correct ID without problems.

Sorry about my english.. Anyway I confirm that this strange bug depend from the mobile me email migration.

Just in case this helps anyone:

Problem:

I couldn't transition my iPhone 4 to iCloud. Tapping the iCloud setting in the Settings app, then logging in using my .mac MobileMe ID produced the "User name or password incorrect" error message. And Settings froze with the indeterminate progress indicator (the "gear") spinning away. Pressing the Home button brought me back to the home page, and I could launch other apps. But tapping the "OK" button did nothing, so I had to manually force quit it with the task manager.

Just minutes before, I had successfully used my .mac MobileMe email address and password to transition two Macs to iCloud with no problem. But it didn't work on the iPhone.

Solution:

I used the same MobileMe ID (my .mac email address), but typed ".me" instead of ".mac" as the suffix. Instantly logged in and completed the transition to iCloud.

The big hint was that the "example" shown in the ID text field was "example@me.com" and not "example@mac.com."

Hope this helped at least somebody out there.

Great solution: this worked perfectly for my iPad. Many, many thanks!!

Yesterday I transferred my old Mobileme account to iCloud. Able to sign in on iMac & MacBook but got the "User name or password incorrect" frozen error message on the iPad. I gave up after five hard resets.

This morning Applecare had the following suggestions that didn't work: reset my Apple password, reset the network settings.

Their final recommendation: wipe the iPad. My response was: "no way".

While Applecare was on hold, I found your post & deleted my Mobileme account in Mail Settings. Problem solved. I told them to spread the word about your solution.
