It won't turn off. I've spoken to Apple. I'm gutted as the reception on 3G for calls is crap! I want my old iPhone 4 back!!
Gosh no need for drastic action like returning the 4S. This 3G on/off feature could easily be enabled again on future updates. I'm hoping so as well.
I also need the option - so i just gave feedback to apple. Hope they enable the feature again!
I would agree but I can't make or receive calls properly on 3G. I get one bar which is just enough for it to stay on 3G but not good enough for calls! I so regret selling my iPhone 4 so quickly!
I don't have this option on my iPhone 4 either, not sure if it was there before iOS 5.
Apparently it might be a carrier-specific option. I'm on 3 (Three UK). Anyone else on 3 who are also missing this option?
Have just got back from Apple. They changed my phone as they thought mine may have had bad battery and said that they would be looking at bringing back 2G option, but that Siri wouldn't work with 3G off.
yeah i found out that about siri yesterday. how long does your battery last ?? mine doesnt last a day but with 3g on all the time that could be normal
Hi Dave
Mine was lasting just under a day and they said a full day was about right on 3G! With 2G it used to last 3 days. So much for better battery life. I wanted to go back to a recon 4 but they wouldn't change it down for me. We just have to wait for Apple to change the phone back to being able to turn 3G off. Hopefully the more that complain, the quicker they will sort it
To the best of my knowledge all networks except 3 could run happily on 2G
Lets spread the Feedback-Link: hopefully a lot more will complain!
I have sent my feedback...
3G is killing my battery - I am currently sitting at work with data switched off due to losing 60% in 5 hours.
I hope they sort this out pretty quick.
3 only uses 2G when 3G is not very good/available. In areas where they have strong 3G single, 2G is being switched off.
I presume this is why the option is not available. I don't have any problem with it as 3 have the best 3G network in the UK, just thought i'd mention that it's obviousy carrier-specific.
In a previous ios upgrade or two way back when, apple had to tweak the EDGE/3G auto-switch signal tolerance levels. Looks like they need to do it again since Siri needs 3G or better. Either that or the iOS can enable the 3G on/off toggle based on phone model, meaning different software builds.

Sorry tal1971, you don't understand the issue and your response is worthless. Nothing personal, just the facts. Prior to your post I stated that Apple removed the feature and people should give them feedback if it affects them. Why try to undermine that effort with a senseless post when you clearly don't even understand the issue?
Obviously with me never switching the 3G off or wanting to do this on my iPhone then I wouldn't see it been a problem/issue if the option was removed.
I was basically just trying to put into perspective the issue of the removal of the option to disable 3G on the 4S by describing what would happen when there was poor/no 3G coverage.
Yeah fair enough, some people may have found the option to disable 3G useful, but like I said earlier, I was just trying to put the removal of the 3G option issue into perspective.
This is a problem in the USA as well as in the UK and it isn't not carrier specific. It seems to be part of the iOS 5. I most certainly had it with my iPhone 4 and with iOS 4xx.
While the phone will revert to 2G if it thinks it needs to, that isn't good enough. I can't go a whole day even on mostly standby. I've taken to turning off WiFi when I'm away from it because I can't turn off the 3G. I realize Siri won't work on 2G and maybe that is what has driven it-Apple's special, incredible new feature but if my phone has a dead battery it won't matter anyway.
Spread the news. Complain. We need to get this option back! Cheers.
same with me its a bit of a joke too be honest, fingers crossed for a quick fix
