Safari URL Entry Hangs After Typing 1st Char - But Siri Works to enter URL and Browse

When trying to enter any web address in Safari on iPhone 4S it appears that Siri and the keypad (or some other task) may be competing for URL entry. Here are the steps to reproduce the issue:

  1. Start Safari
  2. Tap in the URL text field and start typing a URL (without http:// just start typing apple.com for example)
  3. upon typing "a" the keypad appears to accept no further entry
  4. However - holding down the "home button" to bring up the Siri voice recognition feature - saying "apple.com" successfully does a search for the URL
  5. Clicking on any URL in [4] goes to the desired page
  6. Keypad entry in **any text field within the webpage itself works fine**
  7. Keypad entry in the URL text field however still hangs upon typing the first character
  8. letting the page sit for a while shows delayed characters in the URL text field

Have tried turning phone off and on but steps [1]-[6] appear to be pretty reproducible (tried clearing cache as well)................everything else works great on the iPhone - which by the way is a great product. Perhaps my phone just has some configuration issue.

Is anyone else seeing this issue?

thanks

Problem Fixed !!

The solution was to take the iPhone in to the local Apple Store Genius Bar - there they were quickly able to try a quick solution (phone reset) which did not work and then a re-load of the iPhone OS/Apps - this worked fine.

Safari now works with keypad typing and Siri as expected.

Great Job Apple on a Great Product and Excellent Cusomer Support !

Problem Back Again !!

It appears that something is happening with the touch screen state - today similar behavior is back again with two additional observations:

[1] A fully charged battery drained down to almost nothing while the display was off, no apps were running and only cellular service on - also note that the phone was in a "SpekCase" with no cover on the front but the iPhone was placed face down on a counter overnight..................green - completely full battery last night was red - almost empty in the morning.

[2] Touch screen today had very intermittent behavior on the top half of the screen today:

(a) brightness was set to auto and is now usually very dim even in auto mode in dark or light room conditions

(b) taking brightness out of auto mode and placing in manual mode - the birghtness slider would not move properly and sometimes jiggled on the screen when tryingto adjust

(c) Safari had similar problems when entering a text URL however this time when typing on the keypad different links on a loaded page were selected

(d) behavior now appears to have cleared up

Seems like there may be either a firmware issue or some other intermittent issue.

Going back in to the Genius bar to discuss further - still think its is a great product though !!

Problem Solved !!

There were three contributors to root cause on the above observations:

[1] Battery Drain --> Task Crash - Solution Resotre iPhone at home from iTunes
After going back to the Genius Bar and explaining the issue they ran a software profiling application on my iPhone and discovered that the "Springboard" task was getting into an odd state where it was always consuming a large number of CPU(s) cycles and thus draining battery. Doing a restore and re-sync per the instrutions at: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137?viewlocale=en_US

[2] Battery Drain --> Location Location Location - turning off this functionality when not needed greatly improved my battery drain

[3] Touch Screen Glitches --> Car AC-PowerConverter power noise

It appeared that the noise from the swtiching power inverter I was using in my car caused some odd behavior on the touch screen due to supply noise - after disconnecting the iPhone 4S from the power inverter the touch screen performed **exactly as expected**

Genius Bar profiled the software issue quick and with solutions [1]-[3] the iPhone 4S works great !!!!

Thanks!
