Sim Card Failure No Sim with iPhone 4S Anyone Else?

Got the new 32GB iPhone 4S today from AT&T, activated the phone was working all morning, I started experimenting with Siri and a couple minutes later the phone was hotter than usual and I get Sim Card failure, and Bad SIM messages. The phone now only says No Sim. I get home take out the SIM card and put it in my previous iPhone 4 and it works just fine. I then put in a blank micro SIM into the new iPhone 4S, but it still says NO SIM. Thinking the SIM reader got fried some how already.

Anyone else have this problem maybe a bad batch out there, or I just got an unlucky lemon?

I made an appointment for the genius bar tomorrow, but I seriously doubt they will have replacement stock of the 4S already. Guess I will find out what my next course of action will be tomorrow trying to get a replacement since new orders are taking 30 days to ship I am afraid I will have to wait awhile to enjoy the new features of my already paid for phone 😟

I'm in Malaysia & I'm experiencing the same problems since getting my new iPhone 4s 32GB 5 days ago. It's just never ending, I keep getting sim card failure/no sim card messages AND each time I try to make a call or SMS, it takes me 3/4 attempts before it is send or the call goes through!!! I'm forced to wait for the phone while it searches for a signal in places I've had no problems with signal before on my 3GS. Sometimes I'm even forced to reset network settings to get it working :(

I'm already on ios5.0.1, I've done restore & update via iTunes AND I even wiped my phone clean & started the setup all over again & I'm still having the same problems!!!

Seriously APPLE, if only a handful of the devices are experiencing this, then please just replace our devices immediately instead of making us jump through hoops trying this & that. It just frustrates us more. I've been a local customer of Apple for a very long time & now I feel stupid & cheated. Everyone has always been telling me to switch over to Android so now I feel even worst!!!

Then I read this thread from beginning to end & it still doesn't offer a solution!!!

Where is your customer service??? What are you going to do about this??? Really there is very little point in having good marketing when your customer service/support is crap!!!

Hi All,

I think I just resolve the problem with my frequent "SIM card failure, no SIM, fail calls, fall text" problem.

Steps as follows;

1) Back up phone in itunes, unplug phone

2) > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings

3) Set up as a new phone

4) Choose your region (the country you are in now, regardless of where you bought your phone)

5) I choose to "ON" everything else, "OFF" iClouds, "don't send" to Apple

6) When phone restarts, try to send a text to a friend or call someone

7) Don't attempt to switch any service off yet > Power off and on again

8) Restore from latest back up

So far I have not turn on Wifi yet, have been able to text and call, no more sim errors *fingers cross*

Hope this help some of you. Cheers!

Genius Bar visit w/ Verizon 4S brick (in USA)

My iPhone 4S is just a few days old. It was purchased and set up in my local Apple store. Verizon phone calls worked fine then.

Recently had Airplane Mode turned on. When I turned it off, the “SIM Failure” message popped up. Also the status bar showed No Service.

(Note that Airplane Mode had been off and on at other times with no problem.)

Visit to the Apple Genius Bar:

A friendly genius named Robert said that the issue was with the Verizon SIM chip. That the chip did not work well and was really just a “placeholder”, with no actual function here in the USA.

He removed the chip, closed the slot, and immediately, Verizon service was active on the phone.

He recommended holding on to the chip, in case there was ever a reason to actually need it but he doubted that there would be.

Asked him if there was a better Verizon chip available – he said no.

So for the Verizon 4S phone in the USA, just take out the SIM card and leave it out.

Thank you, yanger_bomb... I just got my new phone on Sunday, & last night it started dropping calls & giving me the SIM error message... Tried several things, & it would work for a little while, then quit again... About an hour ago, that stopped working also... I tried the tape thing, & so far its working... Hopefully it will last this time, crossing fingers... Thanks again...

I've posted a few times here on this subject, just an update, and an opinion.... first the opinion... I really don't think it's a 'software' issue, based on my experience... AND I don't think it's the iPhone either.... I am still running the original 5.0.1 (9A405) that came with my 4S... 20 hours after purchase I got the SIM issue notifications .... went to AT&T store (different store, different state) and got a new SIM... phone has worked flawlessly since December 8th... I feel it's a physical SIM issue and until one finds a good one (who knows what that means) you're screwed.. hopefully Apple is eventually able to really nail the problem, but I would keep trying SIM cards... a possible problem solver for out of country people. But then again, who knows... it could be anything, and I have just been lucky for the last 5 weeks... will update if I have the problems again... good luck everyone!

Sorry dave drums, I have to disagree. But, and it's a big BUT, it is possible there are multiple problems all being experienced here and because the symptom is the same everyone things the problem, and therefore the cure is the same. If yours was fixed by a sim swap, that's great, mine wasn't. Rebooting, reinstalling didn't work either. The update to 5.1 beta worked and has for nearly a week now, with better battery life to boot. There are also people that have said other things have fixed theirs.

So, maybe we're experiencing different things. What do you think?
