Sim Card Failure No Sim with iPhone 4S Anyone Else?

Got the new 32GB iPhone 4S today from AT&T, activated the phone was working all morning, I started experimenting with Siri and a couple minutes later the phone was hotter than usual and I get Sim Card failure, and Bad SIM messages. The phone now only says No Sim. I get home take out the SIM card and put it in my previous iPhone 4 and it works just fine. I then put in a blank micro SIM into the new iPhone 4S, but it still says NO SIM. Thinking the SIM reader got fried some how already.

Anyone else have this problem maybe a bad batch out there, or I just got an unlucky lemon?

I made an appointment for the genius bar tomorrow, but I seriously doubt they will have replacement stock of the 4S already. Guess I will find out what my next course of action will be tomorrow trying to get a replacement since new orders are taking 30 days to ship I am afraid I will have to wait awhile to enjoy the new features of my already paid for phone 😟

Okay, it looks like 5.1 beta 3 does fix the sim issue. Now this brings into my question - I am worried that if we upgrade to beta without developers account (or without registering UDID) - is it possible that we won't be eligible to upgrade when 5.1 final release is available? I have read in many places that beta 3 expires on 14 March, 2012 and devices using this beta will be shut down after that date.

I have followed that brilliant instruction and now I have iPhone 4S instead of iPod Touch 4S!!!

The solution of my "SIM failure" and "dropping network" problems is on the page:

P.S. It is really nice device... . I mean iPhone 4S. 🙂)

Out of curiosity I went to viktorsmog's link. What struck me immediately is how many other forum discussions are centered around this same issue. Too bad, in a way, that somehow whoever moderates these forums couldn't merge all those separate discussions. I say that because it does appear THIS forum was first to latch onto the iOS 5.1 beta 3 solution. It would have helped those other forums to learn this earlier.

My second observation regarded how many times the iOS 5.1 beta 3 solution is mentioned and steps explained as to how to implement it. But, it appears many folks don't read these posts as they continue to express their dismay over their non-functioning iPhone's.

Having said that, I understand why some people have reservations about installing the iOS 5.1 beta 3 update. Still, as in my case, those reservations were not enough to prevent me from enjoying a fully functioning iPhone 4S.

The iOS 5.1 beta 3 update is clearly the most consistent, viable solution to fix the SIM problem. I still have not read a single post by someone who has updated and not have their phone's functionality return.

hello eveybody. i have the iphone 4s since almost 3 months and since day 1 problems started, losing network, no service, sim failure and battery draining. and since day 1 i was trying to find a fix. after contacting may carrier they told me that it is a software-hardware incompatibilty between the 4s ios and the sim card and the network signal frequency of the carrier company. and i had to wait untill the new sim cards are produced. Meanwhile i was using another carrier company sim cards and my iphone worked much better. after that apple released ios 5.0.1 (9A406) so i returned back to my old carrier sim card and it worked good but some problems remained. 3 weaks ago my carrier company delivered the new sim cards although my phone was working fine. but for curiosity purpose, i tried to install ios 5.0.1 (9A405) again using the new delivered sim card, and no problems showed and i was able to call and text anytime. so i discovered that the no service and the no sim errors are generated due to sim-ios incompatibilty. but the battery draining and the latency in recovering the network after moving from a low coverage area to a good coverage area remained, and everytime i went into the elevator, underground, or any place with low coverage area, i lose the network and no service appeared "wich is normal" but if i go back to a high coverage area, the no service message remained for almost 10 minutes minimum "wich is completely not normal". more investigation about this problem and contacting apple bug reporting service and lots of trials, i discovered that this case is the main issue and it is behind the battery draining. Simply it was the diagnostic and usage reporting. whenever u enter a low coverage area, your phone loses network, causing an error generation, so your iphone tries to send this error message to apple server while you are without connection, it tries again and again and again without success, so the os shuts down the process of sending the error report and the network reception shuts down " you can simply monitor the procedure by installing the configuration utility from apple website " and monitor the configuration log where you can see the process happening untill shutting down the carrier reception retrievel function. so the solution and only solution was to turn off the diagnostic and usage sendind data automaticly. and after doing that, battery and no service error completely fixed.

SO TRUST ME THIS IS THE SOLUTION AND FOR BEST RESULTS

- ORDER LATEST SIM MODEL FROM UR CARRIER

- INSTALL IOS 5.0.1 (9A406)

- REMOVE SIM PIN

- TURN OFF DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE AUTOMATIC SEND

- USE YOU PHONE UNTILL BATTERY DRAINS AND SHUT DOWN THEN RECHARGE TO 100% "to refresh it and calibrate it"

Wish u good luck and let me know your feedbacks.

Hi Guys,

I thought I would add my notes on the 'invalid sim' problems. After reading these forums for the last week, I have managed to find a solution for my invalid sim card problem, WITHOUT upgrading to IOS 5.1 beta 3.

Here's what I did:

1.) I upgraded my software to 5.0.1 (9A406) by following the instructions mentioned elsewhre on this forum

2.) I went to my network provider store (in my case O2, in Munich) and got a new SIM card. I looked at the designs of the SIM card and my old card has a very different design to this new card! Apparently, other people have needed a new SIM card because of this problem (according to the guy in O2). Make sure you get the new 128k design SIM card!

3.) I inserted the new SIM card

4.) I phoned O2 and asked them to transfer my number onto new card. They said 'transfer' would take up to 24hours. I was told to connect my iphone to itunes so that the SIM can be activated. Do this BEFORE you unlock the SIM! (as told to me by the O2 operator)

5.) When I got home, I plugged my phone into itunes and activated the new SIM

6.) I unlocked the SIM card using the new SIM code (provided with the paperwork of the new SIM card)

7.) Finally, I went into 'Phone'-->'SIM PIN'--> and switched the 'SIM PIN' to OFF

Phone has been working now for three days 🙂, no probs!

The point is, I don't think you need to use the new 5.1 beta 3. Just make sure your software is up to 9A406 and then acquire the new 128 SIM design from your network provider.

Hope it helps!

Best Wishes,

Andy

Finaly got my new SIM card and the thing works, although I was locked out of my phone after hitting restore instead of update! I just got it to DFU mode, restored it to iOS 5.0.1 (9A406) and it works fine! Turns out my problem was the SIM card, not anything else. Will try and update to 5.1 beta 3 to benefit from other advantages

Yes, see my earlier post. Just ask them for latest design sim card, which is 128k. They will know what you're asking for.

My phone is still working with not a single problem now! :)

Simple as following my instructions above. Hope it solves most people's problems. I should give credit to others, I was nowhere near the first to find this solution as I had found it from others on this forum. I just wanted to share my own findings from following this solution.

Good luck,

Andy
