Sim Card Failure No Sim with iPhone 4S Anyone Else?

Got the new 32GB iPhone 4S today from AT&T, activated the phone was working all morning, I started experimenting with Siri and a couple minutes later the phone was hotter than usual and I get Sim Card failure, and Bad SIM messages. The phone now only says No Sim. I get home take out the SIM card and put it in my previous iPhone 4 and it works just fine. I then put in a blank micro SIM into the new iPhone 4S, but it still says NO SIM. Thinking the SIM reader got fried some how already.

Anyone else have this problem maybe a bad batch out there, or I just got an unlucky lemon?

I made an appointment for the genius bar tomorrow, but I seriously doubt they will have replacement stock of the 4S already. Guess I will find out what my next course of action will be tomorrow trying to get a replacement since new orders are taking 30 days to ship I am afraid I will have to wait awhile to enjoy the new features of my already paid for phone 😟

Hi Mr. Luigi,

I this the particualar discussion you were looking for was this one herebelow....I get forwarded all the discussions on this issue on my iphone and when I see something important that might be helpful I keep and discard the rest which makes it easier to retrieve later.

It would seem that the issue continues to grow considering we were less than 100 when we first started.....

I finally returned my 64gb black Iphone 4s & got a 64Gb white running version 5.0 and I have decided to keep it that way and not upgrade...the battery drains fast when running 3g throughout (needs a recharge after 6hrs of use). which I came to discover when switched off gives you 2 days of battery life....I will refrain from speculating on that....my old sim card works fine and there has been no issue of any failure & I have had the phone since December 2010. As for Apple's dealing with this..I have nothing more to add that hasnt already been said.

All the best to the person you were trying to assist.

Everyone who have sim Failure Problem just update to new IOS5.1 beta 3.

In order to update you do not need a developers account.

Pay ATTENTION to UPDATE not restore.

If you restore you cant update your iPhone.

Good Luck

Hi Dabratisaurus42,

Thank you very much for the information. Hopefully some of the folks still dealing with this sim problem will find it helpful. Your English is very good. I served in the Peace Corps for three years in the Pacific Island area. I have several friends who served in the Peace Corps in Kenya. Beautiful country. I am glad the Peace Corps returned after having had to leave a couple years ago.

Again, thank you for the information. Hopefully, when iOS 5.1 is formally released many of us will no longer have this problem.

Cheers, Mr. Luigi

Thank you for trying to help people solve their iPhone problems. But posting a link to download iOS Beta software is against forum rules. Beta software is intended for developers to test out their apps on future firmwares and should NOT under any circumstance be installed by someone that does not have developer access. You could potentially brick your iPhone or cause other unforeseen damage in the long run. My advice to anyone dealing with this problem would be to start with a restore in iTunes, then move to getting to sim replaced and finally contact your carrier or your nearest Apple store for a replacement.

Feb 14, 2012 6:12 PM in response to iBK

Dear iBK, Under normal circumstances your clarification of forum protocol would be helpful and very much appreciated. However, in this case, Apple's silence in the face of 70 pages of postings regarding the SIM problem is such a large breakdown in customer service/communication that many of the members of this dicussion have been forced to take somewhat drastic measures. And this is not the only discussion forum focused on this topic.

To respond to your suggestions based on my personal experience:

"You could potentially brick your iPhone or cause other unforeseen damage in the long run." I will not dismiss this advice as it is something to be considered. However, I am not aware of anyone who has bricked their phone by installing the iOS 5.1 Beta 3 software. If you meant by "in the long run" after iOS 5.1 comes out...well, anything is possible. For many of us our iPhones were essentially bricks, or iPod Touches due to the SIM problem. Installing beta software didn't seem too bad in comparison.

"My advice to anyone dealing with this problem would be to start with a restore in iTunes," I personally tried restoring my iPhone 3 times. It accomplished nothing but wasting a lot of my time. I believe my experience was not atypical.

"then move to getting to sim replaced" Verizon installed two new SIM cards in my iPhone. Neither helped. This was after taking my iPhone to the Genius Bar and having them clean the SIM tray contacts, etc. I believe my experience was not atypical.

"and finally contact your carrier or your nearest Apple store for a replacement." My Apple store would not guarantee that a replacement phone was not a refurbished phone. I was not excited of having just paid $300 for a NEW iPhone only to own a used, refurbished one a week later. Also, I had read about too many folks in this forum who got replacement phones only to get those replaced, and replaced, and replaced...

So I installed iOS 5.1 Beta 3 and my original iPhone has been SIM problem free for WEEKS.

Much earlier in this discussion I posted that my daughter's iPhone also developed the SIM problem. Unfortunately for her, and her distraught parents, her first SIM occurrence happened when the car she was driving home late at night from high school play practice broke down in a very rural area 5 miles from our home. She ended up having to walk a quarter mile in the dark to a stranger's home and ask to use their phone to call us for help. Her phone has also been SIM problem free since installing iOS 5.1 Beta 3.

If you read this whole discussion you will see numerous pleas by myself and others to voice their concern about this issue on the Apple Feedback site. This IS the recommended protocol when problems arise with Apple products. We were trying our best to play by the "rules." But, it has been months since the first SIM problems surfaced with not a boo from Apple.

I only speak for myself, but when you put all this together sharing the iOS 5.1 Beta 3 option with others on this site seems deserving of a "Get out of Jail Free" card.

As you said, Dabratisaurus42 was only trying to help. Fact is, he was responding to my request for the link. I was the one deserving of your clarification of the rules of this forum, not him.

Hey Marcus!

My problems began like yours did. I am currently on my third phone (one failed right in the store so it could be counted a fourth), and now my newest one is exhibiting this problem and now, when it shows that message, the phone does NOT work as it did previously. As you can see in my previous posts, I have done everything to try to correct this... renewing all firmware, replacing the SIM card, rubbing a rabbit's foot (well, that's for humor ;-), but nothing has worked.

I haven't been able to rule out that my iHome clock radio/docking station has caused this difficulty nor recharging my iPhone on my MacBook AIr instead of a wall outlet, but I just do not think that's it since no one else here has brought that particular scenario up (and having one unit fail to read MY SIM card or the SIM card that belonged to Genius that was helping me right there in the Apple store pretty much tells me my recharging habits are NOT a cause).

I have a 10:00 appt at thelocal Genius Bar this morning where I plan to turn in #4 and go for #5. I don't know what else to do. ;-(

Hi Mr. Luigi,

Glad to be of help.

Despite the fact that I no longer have an issue with my current Iphone 4s having wisely opted after three month of frustration with my previous 4s not to upgrade, I have still stayed connected to this forrum monitoring to see whether any new ray of hope as to when Apple might provide a developed tried and tested solution to this dilemna.

Yes Kenya is indeed a beautiful country. I have also interacted with a few people from the Peace Corps who have been a welcome addition to our country's development especially in the rural areas so like you am glad they returned.

Cheers,

Feb 15, 2012 7:59 AM in response to iBK

Hi IBK,

I can certainly appreciate and respect your concerns and I for one would be happy to adhere to whatever rules and regulations that Apple would provide to assist in this matter. But like Mr. Luigi kindly pointed out this has not been a normal situation.

There have been a few people who encountered this problem way back in October of which I was one of them and we did everything requested by the book and required by the forrum, but to no avail. I live in Kenya but in this forrum we found out that the problem was global, the UK, Europe, Arabia, India, USA, Canada, Mexico Vietnam, Finland etc. It was a global epidemic that touched all continents created by the Manufacturer himself, who, from most posts reported here did not seem aware that a software upgrade that they had launched had a killer bug. My Iphone 4s which was one of the first production units run well on the IOS 5.0 without a hitch. After the upgrade to IOS 5.01 it became as some have stated here a very expensive Ipod! For three months we all worked at trying to work with Apple's suggestions, changing of sim even came to find out that there are 64kb & 128kb sim cards, as most of the cases appear to be from people who purchased unlocked iPhone 4S phones which mine is. Then there was a new version of IOS 5.01 with a different code which also failed. Then we were to return the phones in the hope that that would end the nightmare but if you read through this forrum you will discover that this did not always provide the solution for many cases.

We were informed to revert the phone to factory settings which was not possible once the software had been upgraded & the other issues that Mr. Luigi patiently pointed out were all put to the test without much success. I paid USD$ 1,300 for my 64GB including handling and shipping and found that it was unacceptable that no solution was available from Apple. It's like buying a Mercedes or BMW and the dealership ignores, when informed, to address the issue of the car not running well because it might not be considered a safety issue or that not enough complaints have been registered. Would that be possible or even acceptable?

It also does not help that most appointed dealers outside the USA also seem reluctant to handle the matter of exchanging the phones as I suspect that they might not be having very much support either from the source, in this case Apple. So the option available is you hand in your phone and wait until the next shipment arrives with the hope that your issues are over. In some qaurters of the world some Apple dealers have begun to acknowledge that there is indeed a problem blaming it on the sim card which has had a lot of people desperately trying to change them with some having success whilst majority have not.

Apple headquarters on the other hand have gone silent. There are reports contained within this forrum of people sayin that people at the Apple stores they visited denied any such issue existed but were willing to replace the phone which in some cases has not solved the issue as those same phones have reverted to the same problem. Am actually surprised that there are still reported recent incidents of this issue still happening to new buyers who are finding their way into this forrum.

We're now in February and still no solution has been forthcoming only the rumour that something might come out in March...but honestly....am not holding my breath. Apple in the meantime continues to break sales records as the recent financial postings showed recently.

So when I see new people coming into this forrum and Mr. Luigi is trying to assist them find some solace from their manufacturer "poisoned" iPhone come expensive iPod....I will help...if I can trace what he needs within this forrum. Why? Because they don't need to go through the rigmaroll we who were here in the begining went through. Also as informed by Mr. Luigi this option was only considered viable when most of the others we started out with tried it out and kept on updating this forrum on their progress days into weeks. Majority had success. Without any side effects which we all were keen to know about as well.

I am one of the few who was able to get a replacement for mine running IOS 5.0 which am happy to leave at that rather than risk another failure and the inability of my Apple dealer to assist. I got in December 2011 & its been working fine.

The Irony of all this is that we were left on our own to try and figure out how to get our phones back on line for a bug that was created not from an outside or foreign site but by the parent company itself or risk losing our investments which no small matter...how then does one trust future upgrades from Apple without the fear that they might render your unit obsolete & pity the person should the unit in question be out of warranty...then what?

I dont know much about Steve Jobs but...in all honesty would this have been acceptable to him...would we be having this conversation right now 5 months or so later.

Would sueing Apple collectively for a product that does not perform as stipulated & in some cases considered a safety risk (when the signal drops & the phone no longer functions) get their attention enough for them to put this on their priority list to either replace the phones or provide the solution within a stipulated time frame? This has gone beyond apology now just a solution is needed.

Speaking for myself, this has to be the most arrogant and self indulged company I have ever had the privilege of buying a product from. I really held Apple in high esteem until this experience. It now seems to me that they are more interested in volumes than in the individuals that collectively form those volumes. More about the bottom line high sales turnover than the individuals that provide that collective total. About the effectiveness of customer care which is better than a million billboards posted on the walls. Peoples opinion matter & Apple seems to have forgotten that as few as might be reprensented here.

My apologies for the Long Email....but this is no ordinary isolated issue....its GLOBAL...and for those who returning the phone to the dealership is not an easy option anything that can help is better than nothing & so far for all accounts and purposes the Beta 3 IOS5.1 has helped.

Oh and by the way I was not the originator of the link I refered Mr. Luigi to, it was posted almost 2 months ago. I simply retrieved it for him and for that I take responsibility...no regrets in helping out at all.

Hello again.I have a big problem and, maybe, someone can give me a piece of advice. As i stated three weeks before,i own an iphone 4s wich was, untill i upgraded it's software to 5.1 beta, unusable. After the upgrade all went well 'till today. My phone was bought from Orange, blocked on Orange and yesterday i decided to pay 140 euros and make it neverlocked(i need it more on vodafone). In order to complete the unlock i had to reset all settings on the phone(in order to activate it once more) and surprise!!i cannot use ios 5.1 beta because the message from Apple is my phone could not be activated because it's registered with the developers program!I hate this situation,i got stucked again with that lousy ios 5.0.1...the problems started in no time:my old buddy sim failure:(((I'm starting to hate this phone,i spent a lot of money on it,accesories, unlock etc and,for what???Please,if anyone has some clue on how i can get back to 5.1(besides waiting till march or God knows when) please let me know asap.thanks a lot!

Here's the latest update. I presently have iPhone #5 here at home. Before I left the Apple store, the genius who was helping me told me NOT to restore my phone...thinking that something corrupted my creep back onto it, so he made sure it was just synched before I left the store. He told me that this particular phone just arrived late yesterday and that it had the most recent firmware loaded onto it. He was, as all the other geniuses I have met there the past two weeks, was sympathetic to my ongoing problems and quite understanding that constantly being on call for emergency surgeries demanded a phone that works consistently is paramount right now and he told me that the new version of the OS is supposed to be being released very soon.

I have absolutely no complaints as to how this particular store has handled my situation. I just wish the folks in Cupertino were a little more on top of this problem. I do know now that I am not the only local person having this difficulty either.

Anyway, besides having a little more to "tweak" on this particular phone becasue a "restore" was NOT performed has not been a problem this afternoon; and I feel that maybe, just maybe, this one will work out a little better for me. (?)

I did ask him about my iHome clock radio and if it could be doing anything to cause this and he told me that the iHomes have a stamp on them "certifying" them for use with the phones and he dismissed my idea of them possibly being at fault. I kind of doubted that it was causing the problem but after this many replacements that was one of the few constants amongst all the phones (I use it every night).

I will certainly keep this forum updated on how this phone works. I am also a little gun-shy now about jumping on any new updates since this problem appears to be related to the update that was made available just weeks after I first purchased this phone. I may not be a 'first on the blocker' when the update appears, just to be sure. ;-)
