Sim Card Failure No Sim with iPhone 4S Anyone Else?

Got the new 32GB iPhone 4S today from AT&T, activated the phone was working all morning, I started experimenting with Siri and a couple minutes later the phone was hotter than usual and I get Sim Card failure, and Bad SIM messages. The phone now only says No Sim. I get home take out the SIM card and put it in my previous iPhone 4 and it works just fine. I then put in a blank micro SIM into the new iPhone 4S, but it still says NO SIM. Thinking the SIM reader got fried some how already.

Anyone else have this problem maybe a bad batch out there, or I just got an unlucky lemon?

I made an appointment for the genius bar tomorrow, but I seriously doubt they will have replacement stock of the 4S already. Guess I will find out what my next course of action will be tomorrow trying to get a replacement since new orders are taking 30 days to ship I am afraid I will have to wait awhile to enjoy the new features of my already paid for phone 😟

Pat,

thank you so much for your advice, I really appreciate your help and support. But unfortunately I was too inpatient and started to restore my iPhone. Now I am totally down, because I am not able even to restore from my backup (due to NO SIM I am not able to activate my iPhone).

I believe new SIM card will help (I have read post from gmarinov and it is pretty consistent - my SIM is 14 years old).

So I will update my information about SIM card replacement as soon as I will get new one.

yey! I can't believe how relieved I am to wake up in the morning and find out that my iPhone still has signal bars and the "no sim installed" warning is gone! after 3 whole weeks of suffering!!!! I'm just glad I don't have to deal with this problem anymore. next time before I buy another product I'll check it out first to foresee any problems!

Just to give my update as well.... got up this morning and still got full signal and have not seen the "invalid sim" message which i receive daily for the past month.. also, my battery says 99% since about 12MN last night with all set in "off" (WIFI, 3G, etc.), well, i think you wont need them while asleep, but noticed that when i am connected via WIFI, battery life is faster, i can stand that as long as the "no service" error is gone.....

One question though, i have a carrier-locked unit, would it be safe to have it unlocked? what are the things i should consider? I read about IOS5.1 still unlock-able at the moment.

Thanks for your inputs in advance.....

@p_rod50 How's it going for you?

My 5.1 update: The phone has been working perfectly for about 27 hours! For the first time in 6 weeks I didn't need to restart the phone when I woke up this morning. I didn't need any reboots during the past day. Everything seems great ... battery life seems fine.

For those still having problems, try doing a full restore. Make sure network settings have been reset. Try changing SIMs one last time ... and then stop trying and get the phone back to Apple for replacement!

I'M STILL EXTREMELY ANGRY, APPLE. I bought this phone in November 2011 and it has been problematic almost the entire time (until yesterday). For the first few weeks I couldn't use the phone at all, and even changed carrier due to Apple's support team. That cost time, inconvenience and wasted stationery.

Hi All, The Apple Discussion Forum was down so I am composing this on the new iOS version of Pages, using my iPad 2, Apple Bluetooth Keyboard, and Origami Workstation. It's my favorite combination for intensive productivity work using the iPad and comes dang close to using my MacBook Pro. Sorry...I digress. I hope when I copy and paste this into Apple Support it works!

I finally was able to download 5.1 to our family's 3 iPhone 4S's, one original iPad, and one iPad 2. When I turned on the devices, there was a notification screen saying an software update was available. Surprise! I have always updated my iOS devices via the wired connection to iTunes, but I decided, "What the heck," let's go for it. So, I downloaded via the wireless Software Update functionality (Settings-->General-->Software Update) on the phones and iPads. This is where things got interesting.

My iDevices followed two different procedures when updating. Yes, you heard that right. I am concerned that for some inexplicable reason this may mean that I didn't get the full, perfect update on some of my devices.

Version 1: I am in "Software Update" in Settings and hit "Update" (or something like that). I was then presented with the Terms of Agreement to which I hit "Accept." Immediately, my iDevice went to a Black Screen with the Update Progress Bar along the bottom half of the screen. After the progress bar slowly progressed from left to right, that screen cleared and eventually another Black Screen appeared with another progress bar. This time the bar progressed more quickly from left to about half way to the right. The screen then cleared and I was presented with the password login screen. The update was done.

Version 2: Everything was the same as in Version 1. BUT, this time, after accepting the terms of agreement the iDevice did NOT go to a Black Screen. Instead it STAYED in the Software Update screen and RIGHT THERE IN THE SOFTWARE UPDATE SCREEN appeared a progress bar with the word "Downloading" below it. This progress bar was a smaller version of the one mentioned above. It took about 3 minutes for the progress bar to move from left to right and THEN...BOOM...my iDevice went to the Black Progress Bar screen and went through all the steps in Version 1.

I have never updated via wifi before so I don't know which version is normal. Or, is it just a random thing and doesn't matter. Or, for some reason, did some of my iDevices skip part of the updating procedure (the part that occurred within the Software Update Screen). After waiting what seemed like a lifetime for this update I am unusually paranoid that I didn't get the "full monty" update on some of my iDevices. To the best of my recollection, one iPad went through Version 1, the other followed Version 2. One iPhone 4S followed Version 1 and 2 iPhone 4S's followed Version 2. I could understand the iPads doing things differently since they are different models. But, I don't get the iPhone's going through different routes as they are supposedly identical machines.

This would have been a lot shorter if I had taken screen shots of things but I didn't dare touch the iDevices during download. If anyone has got this far...I owe you. If anyone can shed some light on this, I double owe you. I probably should have posted this somewhere else, but all "my peeps" are in this thread and I felt more comfortable posting it here.

both ways are normal. it depends on whether the device has had time to download the update quietly in the background before it presents you with the notification. the updates are "delta" which means only the components that need updating are included in the download. if your devices work, then there's nothing to worry about.

Thank you so much gmarinov.

I have read several of your recent posts and they have been very informative and helpful.

Your explanation makes total sense. In fact, after writing my "theis" about the issue I discovered that some of my iDevices were picking up the neighbors wifi signal and locking on to it (it is not password protected). I am not at home, but rather vacationing with the family, and forgot to check which network I was on. Other iDevices were locked on to the wifi signal in the place we're renting. I checked the download speeds for both networks and the neighbor's was slow as molasses. Our wifi signal is much more robust. I think that is connected to your explanation.

Again, your help was greatly appreciated and it put me much more at ease, Mr. Luigi

Pat and Wibbly,

Please keep us posted on the progress of your update. As you might have noticed, I had a little "excitement" when I finally had a chance to update to 5.1. For a while, I regretted abandoning my beloved iOS 5.1 beta update that had served me so well for so long.

But, all seems good now with the insight gained from gmarinov.

I look forward to also hearing from Amazon Sikander as he has, by now, made spashdown.

Best, Mr. Luigi
