Sim Card Failure No Sim with iPhone 4S Anyone Else?

Got the new 32GB iPhone 4S today from AT&T, activated the phone was working all morning, I started experimenting with Siri and a couple minutes later the phone was hotter than usual and I get Sim Card failure, and Bad SIM messages. The phone now only says No Sim. I get home take out the SIM card and put it in my previous iPhone 4 and it works just fine. I then put in a blank micro SIM into the new iPhone 4S, but it still says NO SIM. Thinking the SIM reader got fried some how already.

Anyone else have this problem maybe a bad batch out there, or I just got an unlucky lemon?

I made an appointment for the genius bar tomorrow, but I seriously doubt they will have replacement stock of the 4S already. Guess I will find out what my next course of action will be tomorrow trying to get a replacement since new orders are taking 30 days to ship I am afraid I will have to wait awhile to enjoy the new features of my already paid for phone 😟

giannis153,

Have you consulted gmarinov's recent posts? He describes, via links, as to why certain iPhones may not respond to the update. It has to do with their SIM Card. Is yours old? New? I know you must be crazy with rage, but before completely going nuts you may want to follow Punto Abarth's path and get a totally new SIM card. (Yours may be shot) I noticed you are have an iPhone 3gs so perhaps you are using an older SIM card. I suspect that most of the folks here have iPhone 4S's (I actually don't know that for sure), but I hope gmarinov's suggestion to get a totally new SIM card proves fruitful.

I know you probably are tired of hearing about any more suggestions to fix your problem. But, this one last try may be worth your effort.

If you give this a try, please let us know how things go.

Best regards, Mr. Luigi

in my case the sim error is solved. 3rd day on 5.1 and everything good.

FYI -

originally - this was iPhone 4S factory unlocked running iOS 5 (no sim error, but battery issue)

updated to 5.0.1 (9A 405) (battery issue fixed, sim error started)

updated to 5.0.1 (9A 406) (sim error continued)

updated to 5.1b3 - everything good since then

updated to 5.1 final release (3rd day without problems, i think i'm good now)

Today I installed the update iOS 5.1 onto my six-month old iPhone 4S. The installation went fine but the phone showed NO SIM. I took the card out, then pushed it back. Stll the same message. As my SIM card is more than 10 years old, I thought the problem might be with the card rather than the phone or the update. When I searched the web, I found out that some people had the same problem and resolved the issue with a new card. So I got a new micro SIM card and a couple minutes afer I inserted it, the phone started working properly - I was connected again. My advice is to get a new SIM card if your old one is not a 124 bit. Good luck. Alena

Mr. Luigi, Pat, Wibbly le Monde & gmarinov,

My Fellow Troopers your persistence and endurance has finally paid off! IOS 5.1 is like uncocking that fine bottle of wine that has been sitting in the vat maturing to a beautiful blend of dry sweet rich flavour.....although some still might not see it that way.

If they gave medals for Loyalty I would gladly surrender mine to you guys...I would also add if we were at war...you are my kind of peoples...you've got back bone and then some, I would gladly have your backs. We've lost quite a few people along the way whilst treking through this desert storm and thats kinda sad that nothing could be done to convince them otherwise, but we all have the right to chose the path we take.

After reading all your feedbacks and Mr. Luigi finally taking the plunge to upgrade to IOS 5.1 after you guys, it was time for me to get off the bench and jump into the abyss with you all. If it worked, great, if it failed then we would all still be connected by this one grief that has had us bound together since October last year....I guess to quote the famous phrase of the three masketeers it was "all for one & one for all" and so even though my 2nd iPhone 4s was running on IOS 5.0 and seemed ok I decided to jump back into the eye of the stormy seas. Yeah we're a little mad like that...After all Pat had already gone through 5 iPhones & was on his sixth...talk about persistent loyalty!....and like you all have confirmed the phone, mine is also so far is running fine...it has now been running for six hours straight..with all the features on go...wifi, 3G & bluetooth...and all is registering as it should...Infact I would wager to say its running better than ever and I love some of the little new features. Like you can switch off 3G and still have internet access - which increases battery life, atleast on my phone & the fact that its now easier to access your camera and that it has also been tweaked alittle....To me this phone is like the Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bugatti Veyron & Rolls Royce's of this world, when it works, it really works, when it doesn't its the most miserable and most expensive hank of metal to carry arround and you almost dont want to mention to a soul that you own one!

My apologies for this lengthy email but it might be the last one for a while....

I have found some amazing and wonderful human beings in this forum who have showed maturity, patience and a willingness to help out where they could even at the risk of being considered rebels. I was also grateful for the willingness to share, update and encourage that flowed from all over the world into this forrum that became the centre of our universe during this enduring time...it was another show, atleast for me, about how human beings can pool their resources together for the good and betterment of each other when the time arises...in here I found my comrade in arms...even after we all felt a sense of abandonment from the "Father" of the child we were trying to sustain our objective remained to find & keep hounding the parent for the cure.

In closing, I cannot say that this will be the last product from Apple that I will ever buy...although like wise Mr. Luigi said I will probably give the product of choice some time to circulate & research intensively on it before placing my order....

I personally feel that Apple's treatment of this matter, in going silent was a bad judgement call and inexcusable no matter that they finally seem to have cracked it...that, despite how small the number of defective units their might have been in comparison to the total amount of phones sold...we might never know what the real percentage of good versus bad there was...but we know it certainly was big enough to warrant a fix...they should still have taken accountability & maintained integrity by formally addressing matter.

In honesty my staying with this phone isnt because of Apple but because of Steve Job's insight & execution and the unequivical fact that when its firing on all cylinders...its the best phone ever....it just so happens to be an Apple product....

But....that's only My opinion...and to the powers that be....that might not mean much at all..when am still invested in their product...I dont mean that in bad way but its like a marriage gone sour...yet here we still are and grateful to have a fully functioning phone...but not sure about the widowed parent!

To my fellow comrades.....I write you from the Central Eastern Part of the continent of Africa, in a country called Kenya and in the Capital City Nairobi the place better known as "the City Under the Sun" and where Lions still roam freely in the wild of our National Park not too far from where I live....I wish you every happy operational success and thank you all.... as....WE HAVE TOUCH DOWN!

Beautifully worded post! I could nopt have stated it any better. I will miss your posts!!!

It is a very cool 'thing' that a pesky electronic nightmare for many of us brought us all together with no regard of borders, accents, language, politics and the like. All that baggage was left behind as we tried to figure out WTH was going on with one of our most prized and well used possessions that was not working as advertised and at a healthy monthly cost to all of us. And to see the offerings of help, suggestions and even 'smashing it up against the wall" suggestions kept me thinking, and smiling, all along this journey.

I am about 4 days into the new firmware, still cautiously optimistic, in saying that yes, well, maybe...this glitch is done with. I still take a breath when I disconnect from charging each morning and evening before retiring for the night, and so far, at least, the no "No SIM Card Found" and no "Requires Authorization" messages have popped up on my screen. I only hope it remains that way and nothing else pops up during this version or in upcoming versions.

Cheers to everyone here....and I hope the few that have experienced problems with their new upgrade have updated their carrier information as outlined a few pages back....and that your iPhone problems disappear too so we can sadly leave the friends we made here but go one and gladly pursue the lives we were chasing before this problem banded us all together, however briefly!

Here goes my iPhone experience..

I have my iPhone 4s for almost 3 months. Since the second week into owning it, it has the no sim card error intermittently - for minutes it worked and minutes later the error comes. For days, shutting it off and restarting or reset network helps, then days later, the no sim error came and decided to stick around for a week or two. Now 5.1 came, the cycle is starting at the minutes on and off stage. During all these time, I had to: restore no less than 30 times; tried at least 6 new sim cards with multiple major phone service carriers; Upgrade after upgrade of ios; phoned online supports one after one; AND here I am still with no solution ..and no help from apple!

Tried to get at least an exchange and to my great dissappointment, apple is not willing, but supposingly my phone came with a one year warranty?! The Apple store in Canada where I purchased from, leaves me with either dropping my work to fly to Canada to get an exchange or beg the local apple support team to exchange it for me in China?!! The online tech supports say to go for a mail in service with Canada.. And still I am being kicked around.

I brought an unlocked (unmodified) npbrand new phone and am using an apple recognized phone service company in china..now all I have is a NO EXCHANGE and no phone iPhone!

Is there something not making sense or I have gone crazy?
