Sim Card Failure No Sim with iPhone 4S Anyone Else?

Got the new 32GB iPhone 4S today from AT&T, activated the phone was working all morning, I started experimenting with Siri and a couple minutes later the phone was hotter than usual and I get Sim Card failure, and Bad SIM messages. The phone now only says No Sim. I get home take out the SIM card and put it in my previous iPhone 4 and it works just fine. I then put in a blank micro SIM into the new iPhone 4S, but it still says NO SIM. Thinking the SIM reader got fried some how already.

Anyone else have this problem maybe a bad batch out there, or I just got an unlucky lemon?

I made an appointment for the genius bar tomorrow, but I seriously doubt they will have replacement stock of the 4S already. Guess I will find out what my next course of action will be tomorrow trying to get a replacement since new orders are taking 30 days to ship I am afraid I will have to wait awhile to enjoy the new features of my already paid for phone 😟

Hi voula_72 and juanitaooi,

voula_72, that is good news regarding your phone. I hope it's proper behavior continues. If you could repost in a week or so regarding how things are going, I'm sure that would help future visitors to this discussion.

Juanitaooi, when you call Orange be sure to ask for a new 128K sim card. I suspect at this point that is what Orange would send you anyway, but it is best to take no chances.

The iPhone 4S is very..."Simcentric." It is quite unforgiving and intolerant of variations in what it likes in Sim cards. As illogical as it may sound, you can even take a fully working Sim card out of another earlier version iPhone and it will not function well in the 4S.

You would think that these micro-sim cards would have 128K, 64K, whatever, written on them for easy identification. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Each provider has their own coding to identify what type Sim card it is. So, you are going to have to trust Orange that they are sending you a 128K card. Best to help that trust along be specifying on the phone that you absolutely need a 128K card for your iPhone.

Good luck! Mr. Luigi

Hey there, Mr. Luigi! Although I hate to see folks still having this problem with their "No SIM Installed" problems, I am glad you are still here dispensing advice (the corect advice, I might add) ;-)

Just to update you, I have NOT had another No SIM warning since the very first day with brand new iPhone #5 and the new OS {Version 5.1, 9B179} Although with all the replacement of iPhones I went through, perhaps getting another SIM card would have worked? I don't remember but at that time I don't think we knew about the 128K card and perhaps the one time I switched out SIMs with AT&T I just received a carbon copy of the one I had before.

It still chaps me that even the Mac-centric magazines haven't addressed this problem even though I have written them on more than one instance and never did get a response. (Mac Life). I guess they don't want to bite the hand that does feed them too hard? ;-)

But the overall number of complaints here has somewhat dropped in volume so hopefully over the next few months we won't see as many folks with this problem that we were seeing a few months ago.

Take care and hopefully this No SIM problem will eventully cease. Until then, keep up the good work! :-)

Cheers!

Hello Pat !!!!!

Sorry for the delayed response. My students are preparing for the AP Exam in Physics and it is a monstrously hectic time of the year. It made me lose a little contact with our beloved SIM forum discussion.

That is great news regarding the performance of your iPhone. Your are right, the 128K SIM card issue really didn't surface as a prime suspect until late in the process. However, I do think iOS 5.1, for many, also played a significant role in addressing the problem.

It appears that Orange in the UK is producing a disproportionate number of problems and I wonder if their network, combined with a less than perfect SIM card, produces a Perfect SIM Storm of sorts.

I am anxious to hear back from those who have ordered new 128K SIM cards from Orange to see if it rectifies things.

I hope things are going well. That was one hectic period for you...juggling a demanding job situation with a iPhone that was possessed by the "Dark Side."

You absolutely deserve some time to Feast and Be Merry after that ordeal.

It was great to hear from you.

Hi AlecksJorJ,

Based on other's experiences in this forum, I would do the following if you have not done this already. Ask your cell carrier for a NEW 128K MICRO SIM card for your iPhone. They should not hassle you about this. Show them this discussion forum if necessary. Right now, that is your most likely suspect and is the first thing you should address as you troubleshoot your problem. Just make sure you are provided you with a NEW 128K MICRO SIM card as there is enough evidence available to suggest that the 4S reacts poorly to smaller capacity cards, used cards from previous iPhones (or any phone, and even if that used card was working fine in the previous phone), etc.

Good luck and let the forum know how things go so folks can learn from your experience.

Hello Mr. Luigi!

I had JUST composed a loooong reply to your delightful post of January 12?,2012 when the text simply BLINKED away!!! I can not re-compose the entire flipping' tome again, but I must tell you how

much your cheerful wide-world view impressed me! I am sure you've heard a wise Hebrew, I believe, proverb which I think aptly serves your finale observation: "A joy shared is joy doubled; grief shared is sadness halved!"

I found this forum,of course, as I am a new iPhone "tamer"wandering in the wilderness of Apple's rotten core!!! HOW DARE THEY CONTINUE SELLING 4S iPhones TO FOLKS AS LATE AS MAY 2012 FULLY KNOWLEDGEABLE OF CONTINUAL PROBLEMS?!?!?! I purchased my iphone from a Radio Shack electronics store far,far away from my current locale!! Over time, I'd developed respect for the practical advice and keen minds of all the "geek girls &guys" employed therein.

Even in the hectic 2 weeks before I flapped my swan wings and flew away, I had to upgrade the iOs to 5.1.1. I did what was requested, linked to my elderly desktop. Even with this "new plague" message, my iPhone still operates fine. I was warned to ONLY use WIFI even with the international calling package I purchased from my carrier (AT&tT) before departure. I wonder if my warranty will have expired by the time I am home, well after 30 days from purchase?? In an area where I am not linked to WIFI, would flicking ON for a brief time period my DATA COLLECTION settings be the thing to do? I wanted to access my translator APPS to assist me in communicating information yesterday, but I was stymied quickly followed by annoyance!!

Oh well, once again current application of content grasped in mime classes from back in the day confirm the eternal value of an excellent education in Classics!!! ;-) So, Mr. Luigi from one "****-eyed optimist" to another, THANK-YOU for sharing your joie de vivre, calming logic, and wisdom!!!

Peace, iSwanpeck

Hello iSwanpeck!

Forgive me for replying in such a tardy manner to your complimentary post of June 1st. It certainly warms my heart to know that you also share hope for a world that can eventually understand all of us prosper when we reach for common ground and understanding.

It sounds like you have had your share of problems with the iPhone. I hope that this has been resolved. I am sure you noticed that at this point in the game with the SIM issue most of the remaining problems have been resolved by getting a brand, spanking new 128K micro SIM Card from your carrier. My post of May 20th speaks to this, as do other posts. In fact, the May 20th post is right above your thoughtful post to me.

OK, it time to push on. Again, thank you for your kind words and I hope your iPhone starts to treat you with the "respect" you deserve.

Best, Mr. Luigi

Thanks so much Mr. Luigi!! I realized that you recently began a teacher's brief break, so no worries about perceived tardiness on my part!

Unfortunately, I sure still do have the problem as I am a few continents away from the Radio Shack from which I purchase such items. It has been QUITE inconvenient for a solo traveller, I 'll tell you; as I intend to info my state's attorney general upon my return home

I do think in my particular case, I've observed the SIM card error arises as a direct result of heat. I do try to keep my iPhone out of direct sun and ensure it accompanies me into any AC havens. Thanks again!! I will post an update after I obtain my "brand spanking' new SIM card. " I will certainly post post haste if my supplier balks at a replacement SIM!!!
