iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

It...Is...That...Simple.

Not so. There is a definite problem with iOS5 - many users who had days of battery life on their iPhone 4 before iOS5 have seen battery life plummet with iOS5.

Battery life on the 4S could be expected to be a little shorter than the 4, for the reasons you say, but not the single-digit number of hours people are reporting. A lot of people would accept even 25% of Apple's reported specs, but sadly users don't get even that.

Well, I will say this. You probably know more about the battery issue than I do because the 4s is my first iphone.

I am just making an argument that a new iphone 4s ... with double the features of the iphone 4 ....

will for sure use more battery life.

At first I was angry with the battery life , but now I am pleased with it.

I believe a lot of people saw the news story that the 4s may have battery issues and then everyone wants to say

" OH MY PHONE BATTERY IS BAD "

" OH I NEED A NEW PHONE ITS BAD "

I believe half of the complaints would never have been reported if the story never made mainstream media.

Honestly, I find it's a bit of a shame some of you come here in the guise of helping, yet try to revision Apple's PR and manage even further what the user base should expect in terms of experience and further try to downplay their frustration. This is not helping Apple in any way. It's just slanted. It escapes me why you would want do that really. Obviously you have no clue of what real support is about - it's about delivering on the value and finding solutions, not asking the user to be different. Maybe some of you should read http://www.apple.com/iphone/ - I quote directly from there and the subpage that goes with it:

  • "It's the most amazing iPhone yet."
  • "Picking up where amazing left off."
  • "Two powerful cores and faster graphics make all the difference when you're browsing the web, going from app to app to app [btw here sbailey and friends would claim that technically means you're entitled to a choice of 3 apps a day - I don't think they meant it like that though], gaming, and doing just about everything."
  • "[...]And no matter what you’re doing, you can keep on doing it. Because the A5 chip is so power-efficient, iPhone 4S has outstanding battery life."
  • "iPhone 4S is great for gamers."
  • "The power-efficient A5 chip and iOS 5 deliver outstanding battery life. So you can keep making calls, checking email, playing video, and browsing the web."
  • [iCloud]"It’s automatic, effortless, and seamless. And it just works."

So this is their own PR. I'm sorry ronsIphone, but when you say something like:

"[...] Find the program that you want to use... Use It.... And Do not switch through everything so fast.

Make sure you are not constantly closing down programs every 2 or 3 minutes. REMEMBER......

THIS IS A TELEPHONE AND NOT A DESKTOP COMPUTER. REMEMBER.... IT IS A PHONE AND NOT A PLAYSTATION 3!!!!!! Do NOT FORGET THAT THIS IS A PHONE!"

Well, first of all you don't need to shout and bold it on top. But more to the point, it's just utter crap. On the iPhone's page, Apple doesn't even talk about the "outstanding call quality" of the phone for instance (first of all, does it even have that), or how easy it is to dial with it, the speakerphone or the efficiency in 3G/2G prediction or any of those. The first word is about the A5 chip, and all the rest is about computing, gaming, Siri, video recording, browsing, multitasking and all. Plus Apple has the best application ecosystem and people buy hundreds and hundreds of apps, and Apple makes a fortune with that too. If you were Apple's staff, I'd consider your statement one of the most condescending and hypocretical statement I have ever read. You don't see tv manufacturers ask people to pick a few channels to watch a day because otherwise it could damage the sceen or reduce it's MTBF. Nor do you see car manufacturers recommending to not cut the engine off when you park for safeguarding the engine, or planning where you'll go and sticking with it so as not to ruin the gear box or reduce wear on the doors and such. It would be ludicrous.

The truth is you guys should tone down the revisionism a little bit in my opinion. There's already iOS and Apple's vision to limit the user experience, no need for further limiting. Quite the contrary, if I were Apple I wouldn't mind the complaining seeing many of those who have the issue try at all costs to solve their issue and still love Apple whereas they could have had a refund and bought a competitors' product - I've seen people go through 5 phone exchanges here. Apple should be thankful to have such adamant users. And so should you.

... you're right. Like vendors. When you want to buy something from them they want their money now. I don't see why they'd be entitled to deliver later on the goods, or the value they promoted alongside. Or is Apple and the app store devs doing some financing on the devices and software that I'm unaware of?

It goes both ways. And life is short.

You'll have to excuse 1Appleadaynoway, he's the resident, hypersensitive troll who thinks he's the next iPhone savior.

He's been here since the beginning, and in the early 100's of pages i told him he'd still be here into the mid to late hundreds of pages still dealing with the same issues and NO FIX.

He flipped out of me for writing in upper-case letters too, he's hyper-emotional, it's OK, he'll eventually get over it, or perhaps not and one day he'll wind up on a waned poster in the post office somewhere.

Don't let him get to you, I find it HILARIOUS that he spends so much time here that whatever he does for work must be suffering, or perhaps he's in his mom's basement and it really doesn't matter.

I haven't been on here since the mid 300's pages of posts and he flipped on me again, told him he'd STILL be here misleading people and BAM, here he is! Way too funny.

Anyhow, like you I'm ****** at Apple, unlike you I've been a hard core Apple user for 25 years... and Apple REALLY dropped the ball on this iPhone, in a HUGE WAY.

You're NOT wrong for being upset, even my friends who work at Apple are upset, so iApple has NO CLUE what he's talking about.

Either way, 1Apple seems to think it's "normal" and "acceptable" that a company like Apple put a product as lackluster as this iPhone version out and expects it's users to whittle their phones functionality down to almost ZERO just to keep it charged for day, which goes against EVERYTHING they claim about their products.

NOBODY should HAVE to do that to ANY product and when something liek that does happen, you DO have the right to be ****** off.

Look, I've been in devleopment for many year of my life and this is clearly a complex problem, my guess based upon my experience is that it's a slew of problems, buried deeply in the OS, or a hardware issue and Apple is trying to do everything that they can so that they don't have to eat dirt on recalling millions of iPhones.

Chances are, with a fix not having come yet after this long, it's something serious. Otherwise they'd have found it by now.

But don't let 1Apple beat you down, he tries to do that toeveryone, denying every bit of fact and getting hyperamotional.

It's amusing.

You're so pathetic. If you had read anything of what I posted, you would have seen that I was actually quoting Apple's PR as a counter argument in asking that those guys tone it down on asking people to use their devices differently. Obviously you're a clueless guy who can't even read. ts;cr I guess. What you don't tell those people is how YOU came here a long time ago telling people to enjoy life and to stop doing anything while they should wait like sheeps for Apple to bring further value to them. That I don't like Apple so much has been known since the beginning of time. But what ensued is that you got put down by quite a few people and you're holding a little grudge against me. Proof of that is that when other people advise others, you don't come to post your frustrated rant, but when I do, which is quite less often now, then you are. But you and me know who you are really. I'm quite happy I got to you in so many ways. Your resentment is praise. Tough luck.

Jan 9, 2012 9:48 PM in response to SHADYZZ

What's really amusing is that a two-bit developper like you can't grasp that sure there is a complex problem but that not all users' problems are that exact problem. Someone who's into haskell and such should get that. Which is why a simple reset and going through a charge and such simple things can help when you unbox the device in some cases. I mean it's reasonsable to figure out if someone has an actual problem with his setup or not. Some people don't have the symptoms once they do certain things, or get some acceptable usage for their needs. Plus there's Apple's own page about their own suggestions to save some battery life. I didn't write that, they did - and so many things here were spinoffs on those. We've discussed all that before. Support is not only about solving the most complex of issues, it's also about intermediate solutions. Which is why devs don't get to do support - as they can't make the forest from the trees in front of them. If I helped even one guy disabling the mail notifications from this page, it'll be way ahead of any thing you've accomplished aside from bragging about your skills, devices or power to make people redundant in life.

Jan 9, 2012 9:59 PM in response to 1AppleADayNoWay

I'm laughing AT you. You're way too pathetic to "get to me", as you claimed.

Ignorance and stupidity make me laugh, and you've given me PLENTY of laughs thus far.

Just the fact that you're STILL HERE, EVERY DAY, here let me bold that for ya, EVERY DAY, acting as thugh you're the Apple God, reprimanding people, just like I said you'd be...

that and that alone keeps me laughing, add in all the other pathetic things, it's a laugh riot.

Oh, but keep telling yourself that you one-upped me, say whatever you have to to make yourself feel better.

Good luck to you in life, you'll need it.

Oh, and see you in another 500 pages or so! bwaaahahaaaaaa!

Ok so after the battery issues, my phone's started suffering from Audiogate as well now.

It was working absolutely fine. Then I go into music to play some music through the bottom speaker while I'm driving and wham! no sound. I reboot the phone and realize ALL sounds including phone lock unlock, keyboard clicks, and the speaker at the top have no sound. It doesn't ring when I receive a message but it rings when someone calls me. I also can't hear the person on the other line but they can hear me fine. I can hear them when I turn on external speaker though.

Has anyone here been suffering from audiogate as well?

Jan 9, 2012 10:13 PM in response to SHADYZZ

I just own you, and all other ids you used to pull your stunt. There is no claim. It's just fact. Whether it was on my thread or here, every single time I put you in your place with some credible argument and you were left trying to show some kind of laughing figure, as you head back alone to your little world. I'll reprimand a condescending snob like you any time of the week. See you anytime.

Well let's see, HMMM

You're phone is paired to a bluetooth device and it happens to be in your car ???

When paired, ALL sound will be routed to that device.

I'd check that one.

Re: usage time/standby time

I have had my 4s for some weeks, still on iOS 5.0 (waiting for 5.1 before I update). I did not experience huge battery problems, but then I seldom use location based services, and turn on wi-fi etc when I need it. Usage time is typically some 6-10 hours on a charge depending on the mix of use (internet browsing on 3G or wi-fi, manually cheking of mail, games, music) and standby time 1,5 to 2 days. However, after installing Onavo (an app which routes the mobile data traffic through a server and compresses it or something to decrease the traffic of megabytes) I suddenly had a higher battery drain AND the usage and standby times were suddenly identical. I have allways killed my apps manually, as I am not sure whether they are active in the background or not. Onavo works by changing my internet setup profile from the one of the service provider, and even though the app was not active (not set up to compress or save data), it "used" the iPhone all the time.

I removed the app (uninstalled) and set back the original internet setting of the service provider - battery life back to normal.

Are you sure you have not installed an app which "infiltrates" your setup?

Jan 10, 2012 12:54 AM in response to Scarface.

Upgraded to a shiny new 4S a few days ago and whilst the phone itself is excellent, battery life has been disappointing. I think the main issue I'm having is that the battery is draining significantly during standby.

Last night I tested this by charging to 100% before bed. 7 hours later the battery was at 77% with no usage whatsoever and minimal features enabled + background apps closed.
