iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

UPDATE:

Well, would you look at that??!!

After removing the SIM Card (now i basically have a heavier iPod touch standing there lol), the Waiting/Usage time are now correct and i'm seeing a good battery behaviour...

Waiting time - 11hours;

Usage time - 9 minutes;

Still have 95%.

Could it be the SIM??? It's a new one (already had 2 because of "No SIM/Invalid SIM" issue)...

This shows that the battery itself is fine, and it's not the problem...

Now, is it the SIM? Is it the phone (SIM tray, the SIM reader...or something like that)? Or is it just a compability issue, caused by a hardware problem, software problem, or both?

The main problem is that this isn't easy to narrow down!

But, at least, now i know for sure that the battery itself is ok!

If you can, try it and see what happens...

Best regards

This shows also that the CPU of the iPhone 4S is not the one to blame for the battery life issue!!!

Battery Life...Just my Opinion... (but it works much better now!) Over these past 591 pages I have added a few posts concerning my experiences with the poor battery life problems. On one post I said the ""IR" sensor for Siri was always on even when Siri was off. I think that was a huge contributer to my battery drain. You can check yours with a basic digital camera held in front of the sensor. This lead me to take the phone back to Apple, got it replaced with another 4s which had IOS 5.0 installed. Probably an early iPhone release I suppose. Anyway, I'm not upgrading, no matter what, to IOS 5.0.1 or anything else until I start reading more positive results about battery concerns. I have done all the things mentioned as far as turning off functions etc. but nothing worked on my previous iPhone. This one appears to be working just fine. I think you all are wasting your time with all that you are trying with this phone and its current IOS. Getting aggravated with the phone and each other on here as well. It's just not worth it, is it?

If your problem is high usage time reported while phone is in standby, therefore draining the battery, then see this thread here for info that 'may' help your situation:

The fact that APPLE has re-instated the 3G toggle for 5.1 beta 3 concerns me greatly. It tells me that they have been unable to solve the problem with firmware mods and are implementing this band-aid as a fix. Looks to me like the 4s is doomed to be what we see here and all we can do is wait for iPhone 5...... 😢

Hi, has anyone updated 4S to latest 5.1 beta 3? Is there any improvement for battery life on 4S for this latest beta?

Sorry to disabuse you of this notion, but NOT ALL USERS HAVE BATTERY ISSUES! Mine works just fine,

Of course not all iPhone 4S have battery issues! By chance one would expect that at least one iPhone 4S to have no battery life issues!

Mine works just fine,

How do you know that your iPhone 4S has the expected battery life when:

1) you just wrote in one of your posts that you charge your iPhone 4S everytime during the day when you have the opportunity, and

2) you spend so much time in front of you computer on this forum?

unless you believe that all the articles about the 4S written by various people over the world are just lies.

Wawww.... Just because an article does not match your opinion regarding your belowed-working-iPhone4s it means that is a lie! It is clear that one has a problem accepting that iPhone 4S has issues!

Does that mean no one has battery issues? Certainly not.

Now you are just contradicting yourself!

Some have pretty obivous hardware issues, and others seem to have 'rogue tasks' running that sap the battery and run up the 'usage' figures beyond reason.

If it is iOS bug, apps bugs, hardware issues it is still Apple fault! The point is that iPhone 4s and iOS 5.X.X which is installed on it has battery life issues and it is the duty of Apple to acknowledge it and fix it!

Others seem to have unreasonable expectations.

Again, if people complain here about their battery life of iPhone 4S being shorter than on iPhone 4 then it is not about unreasonable expectations!

Should one fall on his/her back because of iPhone 4S? I do not think so! In the end of the day it is a product with specifications and the seller should provice accurate specifications for real life situations!

If you are in the first two categories, you certainly deserve a fix, whether hardware, or software.

How one can get a fix if in the first place the issue is not even acknowledged?

When we will get a permanent fix for the battery life of iPhone 4S? Next year? The iPhone 4S has been realeased last year and even this year there is not a definitive fix for all iPhone 4S issues!!!

As a point of interest, I set up a brand new 4S yesterday. When asked if i wanted to enable Siri I said no. Even with Siri disabled right from the start, the IR sensor (raise to speak) is enabled!

I totally agree with you!

and all we can do is wait for iPhone 5...... 😢

Do you mean that you still want to buy iPhone 5 after iPhone 4s having so many technical/engineering/software mistakes?

Definitevly my next phone will not be iPhone!

Jan 11, 2012 5:24 AM in response to turbn8r

turbn8r - I agree with you. I paid what i paid to have a Premium equipment. And that, to me, means, most of all, reliability...

But the simple idea of a 600€ phone being delivered to people that i know that will not take care of the phone like i do (because it isn't theirs, if it was, it would be different - sorry, had TERRIBLE experiences with technical services), and take the chance of having it returned pretty much with no change and with a report saying "The device is working properly", just haunts me!! This is plain and simple: i don't trust the technical services in Portugal (never seem to know, never seem to care, when i expose a problem it seems that I'M the technician...😕)

Worth it or not, i'll only deliver it after i did absolutelly everything to try and find the problem on my own...

Cheers!

Jan 11, 2012 5:52 AM in response to marc-man

Marc-man....What I would do is make sure Siri is disabled, do a hard reset, home and power button till you see the Apple, then make sure Siri is not on then use the digital camera to check and see if your "ir sensor" is blinking away. If it is not blinking then go back to Siri and turn it on but leave the raise to speak off. Check your sensor again and see if it is on or off. I would also check this by asking Siri a question while having the digital camera looking at the sensor, make sure it blinks while working then goes out after its done.

Honestly, YES! While my battery does drain faster than I would like at times, I am not struggling like many others are:

  1. When on wifi, I don't experience the battery drain issues and I have wifi access both at home and the office. I easily get through an entire day.
  2. On top of that, I have a charger in the car and in the office, just in case.
  3. I love the functionality of the iPhone and the sychronizing of it with my wife's iPhone, our iPad and our MACBook Pro. It makes life so easy for us, that this battery issue is not a deal breaker FOR US.
  4. I have associates here with Droid devices who struggle every day to go 24hrs on a charge, so I'm not sure that anything comparable out there is better. I am beginning to believe that APPLE's estimates are so overblown that they are perpetuating this problem, more than facts themselves are.

There is definitely a problem (my opinion) with iOS5 and how it is designed to deal with cellular data and the dual antenna setup in the 4s. This firmware problem is carried over to 4 and 3Gs models that are firmware upgraded. If I were away from wifi more and didn't have access to power, I may be more upset than I am with the phone, but......... 😍

3 to 4% for 7 hours is extraordinarily good, but 20% isn't terrible either. That would give you 35 hours of standby, which will below par wouldn't be nearly as bad as many users seem to be seeing. More to the point, instead of calling people names, why not try to figure out why your phone went from good standby battery usage to mediocre, at best, standby usage.

AliAR wrote:

Before December 20th, I had 3-4% battery drainage on standby in 7 hours during my sleep. You think 20% is good compared to 3-4% for 7 hours overnight? I guess not. Still think my battery is "great"?
