iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

LOL!!! As one of the world's largest companies, what other point would there be?!?!?!?

Still trying to figure what was the point, aside from further sales.

Well, that a fruit and vegetable producer would want to sell as much as he can of his production, I mean sure. But from the most capitalized tech business, I would have expected things such as "innovation", "a greater and more empowering experience", "delivering further value to their faithful customers", "returning some of the wealth by lowering their margins on their flagship product to make it the device for the masses instead of a status icon", "flawless engineering", "new and improved design", "crystal clear call quality" and such. Guess I was wrong and Apple is just like any other business and after all why think different when everyone will just rush the to the store to buy it anyways.

Well, at this point, I believe it is a bit late to 'want it to work straight away', as that train has left. Now, you can either try to get a refund, or try to solve the problem.

I think that's the most frustrating thing of all. Everybody is saying the battery life will be better eventually if you turn off so and so and do this and that... Even if all that does improve battery life, its not a satisfactory result considering how much I had to pay for this iPhone. I want it to work straight away. I wasnt expecting to have to make every change possible to see improvement in the battery!

Oh, so you're saying I should go to Settings>Notifications>Twitter and take off Twitter from the notification center? Because I really don't want to do it, I want notifications from Twitter but I think it is trying to find tweets. Not sure about that. I couldn't really find a "turn off push" button and anyways, my 3G cellular network and Wi-Fi are always off for a better battery life. And about the usage and standby issue I had, I think it is actually giving me the correct results! 😀 I'm very happy about it! 🙂

So, it you have cellular data (is that what you meant?), and wifi off, how do you get ANY Tweets? Still, you might try turning off Twitter to see if it is contriubting to battery drain.

I really don't know, haha. Yeah, I meant cellular data, sorry. I'll tell you my stats and tell me if they're good (somehow, it is better than before):

Usage: 1 hour, 33 minutes (I used it for max. 40 minutes, from what I remember)

Standby: 6 hours, 47 minutes

Battery: 86%

I think you missed the point...when the battery died on me after 1day and 6 hours, the cellular data had been always off...wi-fi always off...EVERYTHING you might think of that drains battery - OFF

.

So, why such a massive difference in standby/usage time when the only thing i did was get the SIM out??

With the list of settings that i have applied (see below), the SIM was just enabling the phone capability to make/receive calls or send/receive text messages...

- Auto-Screen brightness Off, with dimmed screen (20% maybe);

- Location Services/system services ALL off;

- Notifications set to Manual, only having "phone and text messages" on notifications centre;

- Wi-fi off (only turned it On for 5 minutes);

- Cellular Data off;

- Network Auto-detection set to off;

- iCloud off;

- Erased all e-mail acounts and set Push to off/Fetch set to Manual;

- Diagnosis set to "Don't Send";

- Bluetooth off;

- Restrictions off (already tried to turn them on and disable Ping, iTunes and Facetime - saw no change);

- No SIM lockout;

- Auto lockout set to 1 minute;

- Closed ALL pages openned in Safari before exit;

- All apps mannualy closed in multi-task bar;

- Removed the iCalendar from the Notification Center (saw a video in youtube suggesting this might be the problem);

- Siri/"Speak to raise" off (after turning it off, turned the phone off and on because there was a known bug that kept the sendor working even after ticking it to off);

- Vibration on only in Silent Mode...

- I've done several restores in DFU Mode and already let the phone drain the battery to 0% 4 ot 5 times (which is more than i wanted!!) and nothing, REALLY NOTHING, seems to fix it!!

Never left it!! No need to remind me though that Apple users are often more about status than value - pay whatever for the latest phone, then pray for a patch or rigged indicator to make it live up to expectations and PR. In the end I think I'm better off in this tent. 😝

But what I also meant is that it's possible to deliver some creativity and take some risks and innovate - to create a more empowering experience. A word of wisdom from Microsoft maybe? Who would have thought, but today you could hear them say at CES "we'll compete with quality, not in terms of spec" talking about their latest mobile effort. iOS and Android have shown us that you can do cutting edge boring grids of apps devices with futile battery life. By the way I don't know if I dislike MS more than Apple - equally I guess. But you have to take a look at their latest Win8 beta. I mean, their active tiles looks great, it's functional, visually appealing, scales properly on phones and desktops/tablets. On the desktop, you can have 2 monitors with one hosting the active start menu - maybe a touchscreen - and your apps on the other. Let's face it, Metro looks and behaves amazingly now. It's an acquired taste but it seems MS will be bridging the gap between their mobile and desktop OS in a more flamboyant and interesting way than Apple I think. When they did Office365 I thought it was all but finished for them, even though Win7 is quite good. But they have guts and don't stop innovating simply because they have a complete control of the desktop OS market. They'll further deliver Win8 on ARM for the masses. Whereas Apple has succeeded in... upstaging their desktop OSX with iOS... such a waste. Now, I mean, what's really different between 4.3.5 or whatever and 5.0.1... and between that and what Lion is becoming pretty much? How menus behave? Time machine? Siri? Their extreme focus on the design of status objects - and single form factors - has actually stalled them... what's left is an OS that's more and more a frontend to the AppStore and nothing much else. I call it the "evaporating OS". And you need to wait for a patch to turn 3G off because of their desire to make Siri the ultimate thing on their phone. Come on. Now people want quad-core cpus on their latest phones... to play Angry Birds. On a credit card size phone. Please. I can only hope Apple come to their senses with their iPhone5. It takes more than the latest tech inside, and more than relying on their undemanding users' lifestyle desire for elegant and childish simplicity. Looking forward to some real innovation, as in "think different". Something with guts...

What's funny, is that you are completely serious! Innovation and creativity? Where would the Smartphone Market be today, without APPLE? Before the release of the iPhone, there was no market. Everything out there today was developed because of the iPhone and to compete with it.

I'll admit that APPLE's has been less willing to push the envelope on subsequent designs and that they have been less than perfect in their execution, but IN MY OPINION, the rest of the competition is STILL trying to catch up to APPLE. Certainly, they cannot rest on past success and without a doubt, they need to address their current issues, but to claim they lack innovation and creativity is just an amazing example of short term memory loss.......

Fair enough. I didn't mean to take anything away from them and what they accomplished with the iPhone - building the market clearly from scratch. And the software ecosystem to top it off. And it's thriving. It is clear Android is competing head on, trying to catch up with ICS and all. No doubt. And WP7 still lacks maturity, yet I expect it to handle Exchange and Office flawlessly and to pick up speed in terms of its offerings for businesses.

But my point is really that, what's next? I'm talking about the current roadmap. Why the 4S and what's in store with the 5? I guess we'll have to wait and see!

Jan 12, 2012 12:39 PM in response to 1AppleADayNoWay

True. I think these incremental improvements will wear thin on the buying public. I can't imagine what leaps forward might be on the horizon, but it's fun to dream........ ;-)

Frankly, that is a REALLY high spec for a cell phone battery. I know the Razr is larger, but squeezing the much battery into a phone that is rather thin seems impossible. Perhaps Apple needs to explore this battery technology. And I find 21 hours talk time more than a little hard to believe.

Tamarillo wrote:

Something with guts, ok, but it has to work. It is interesting that motorola makes the razr maxx with 3300mAh (iphone 4s 1450 mAh) - the market reacts to apples failing.

Jan 12, 2012 12:45 PM in response to Tamarillo

Of course it has to work - I would argue it works better if it does less but that's not the current trend because of "application stores". In respect to batteries, I believe variation in the form factor helps - because some people want very tiny devices and the battery is proportional, whereas other don't mind devices with a bigger footprint and the battery to go along with it. I find the iPhone to be a very small device. But that's a very subjective thing... as I wish for an Apple feature phone (browser and mail only) which is slightly bigger with long battery life and nokia-like call quality. But that's not "Apple" I guess...
