iCloud bookmark sync problems with iPad

After upgrading to iOS 5/iCloud, my Safari bookmarks aren't syncing to Safari on my iPad. Syncing was functional under MobileMe.

Devices:

iPhone 4 (AT&T, 32GB)

iPad (1st gen., 32GB, Wi-Fi + AT&T)

both are updated to iOS 5

both are registered to the same iCloud account (formerly MobileMe)

Data is set to "Push" for iCloud account, with "Fetch" set to "Hourly"

Safari private browsing set to "Off"

Problem:

iPad is not pulling bookmarks from iCloud. iPhone has all desired bookmarks. Bookmark sync is turned on for both devices.

iPad Safari shows two History bookmark folders, and standard issue bookmarks (Apple, Yahoo!, Google, iPad User Guide)

Attempts to edit bookmarks returns "Bookmarks are being synced. Please edit the bookmarks once syncing has completed"

Attempts to add bookmarks returns "Bookmarks are being synced. Please add the bookmark once syncing has completed"

Problem has persisted for at least 12 hours.

Failed attempts at resolution:

Reboot iPad

Confirmed internet connection and access to secure websites on iPad

Quit and relaunch Safari on iPad.

Turn off bookmark sync on both iPad and iPhone, turn both back on

Delete iCloud account on iPad, reinstall iCloud account

Full restore of iPad

Advice is appreciated!

I left 3 messages on senior technicians answering

Machine _ another now - no reply from him yet

Spoke to another apple guy and he said all these bugs are

being made aware to engineers but we will have to wait

for next software update for them to be rectified

It's not effecting everyone - and solutions for some like erasing

safari cache data cookes etc not working for others

Hope they hurry this update fix soon

It's a nightmare having no bookmarks - cant even bloody add them either

Well I got my problem sorted (mine was iPhone, not iPad) tho it's not ideal.

After a trip to the Apple Store, then a 1hr call from Apple engineers, they suggested a Restore. I decided to do a Restore as new (everything I had was either on iTunes or already on my Mac) and put everything back on from iTunes. Then I merged with iCloud and, voila, bookmarks now syncing. It took an hour, and I lost text messages, some settings and had to re-folder all my apps, but otherwise it's all good.

Plus wifi sync and battery life are a little better. If you can go with the inconvenience that is a Restore As New I highly recommend it.

Hope you guys get sorted.

From a different post I found a solution that works for me (my iPad was syncing bookmarks perfectly but not my iPhone). The solution was to enable the "push" option in settings/mail, contacts, calendars/fetch new data.

I ha d turned push off on my iPhone to extend battery life but it seems that it is needed for iCloud bookmark syncing...

The "solution" is quite simple, albeit a tad annoying. On your iPhone, iPad, iPod launch Safari and open your reading list. You can access it by opening the bookmarks menu. Once open the statusbar indicator should start spinning, a few moments later the bookmarks are updated. Shouldn't have to mess with Push or Fetch just opening the reading list triggers iCloud to sync. Note from my experience you need to remain on this page until it finishes, the statusbar item will disappear. Hope it helps!

Thanks to everyone here for your contributions.

I ultimately restored my iPad as new, and that resolved the problem re: iCloud synced bookmarks and reading list. Once the iPad was restored and fully syncing to iCloud, I proceeded to load data a class at a time: apps, music, videos, pictures. After each, I checked and confirmed bookmarks were still functioning. The problem never came back.

Fortunately, I did not lose any program data, but did have to spend a little time (okay, a lot of time) arranging apps, readjusting general settings, and logging in to various apps.

Here's hoping iOS 5.0.1 resolves this issue for everyone.

the iOS 5.0.1 update has fixed this for me on an iPhone 4s.

For anyone reading this down the road, I had tried a number of things, including ...

  • turning off iCloud bookmark sync
  • switching from push to fetch
  • restarting, of course

... but nothing worked. This started on iOS4 / MobileMe / iPhone 3gs ... I had hoped that the switch to iOS 5 / iCloud / iPhone 4s would cure it, but it didn't.

Many seem to suspect a broken plist file on the iPhone, which isn't accessible w/o jailbreaking. This makes sense b/c it would have been ported from the old phone to the new as part of the backup. My iPad and Mac synced their bookmarks fine throughout this period ... only the phone was the problem. The iPad and iPhone were set up identically.

Under 5.0.1 the bookmarks are now OK on the phone via iTunes sync ... I will switch bookmarks to iCloud and see what happens.

Glad to hear you figured it out. For me iCloud: Safari Bookmarks and Notes are not synching across all my devices: iPhone 4, iPad 2, MBP, and iMac. All my devices are up-to-date: iOS 5.01 and Lion. It only works half way. If I add, delete or update a bookmark in one of my iOS devices it replicates OK in the other however, it might sycn with my MBP but not my iMac, In other tests, it will sync to my iMac but not to my MBP. When it does, it puts the added or updated bookmark in the top root level on bookmarks prompting me to manually move the entry and place it into the appropriate folder. If I delete a bookmak though from my iOS it deletes it from the other but not from my MPB or iMac promting me to delete them manually.

Also, Notes is another issue. Without any notice I can have my notes wiped out from all my devices prompting me to restore to the latest one from my TimeMachine. I keep doing this almost daily!

I only have one account as I consolidated all my stuff under my .me account.

This half baked cooked product called iCloud has left me with a very sour and frustrated experience that I'm seriously considering ditching it and going back to MobileMe!
