iPhone 4S camera lens rattle

Hey all,

I hoped they'd fix this slightly annoying iPhone 4 issue for the 4S, but it seems like it's actually become worse, presumably because the 4S camera has five lenses as opposed to the 4's four. Here it is:

Hold your iPhone 4S so that it's upright and tap near the camera lens on the back. You'll hear the same rattling sound that you probably knew and 'loved' with the iPhone 4.

However, can anyone else confirm that tapping on the front, just to the left of the Home button, also rattles the lenses? It does on mine and I'm sure it didn't on the iPhone 4. Irritating...

Thanks!

J

That's what they always say then you'll waste your time to go see the genius at apple and they will tell you it's normal. This is the big problem that know one at apple reads the message boards to see if it's a main issue.

As you see from the boards and posts all over the web it's the autofocus and normal. Maybe one day apple will do something to get their act together and resolve this issue and listen to its customers.

Just an FYI, the phone people told me the same thing and then I went to the apple store and was told its normal.

"I have the same rattling sound on my 4S, and although it is a little bit annoying I actually think this is normal. As far as I know the lenses in the camera have to be a little bit "loose" to allow for optical image stabilization, where the lense itself is moved to correct shaking motions of your hand while taking a picture." - Morbo42 on the next page

This is why I made the point. People keep thinking it's optically stabilised. And we'd all much appreciate if you stopped calling them idiots and I'd personally appreciate it of you didn't imply I was an idiot.

just back from the apple store. they took apart my brand new 4S that was having the same problem. couldnt' find any 'loose parts' floating around but confirmed that mine was a noticably louder rattle than others, including their own personal iPhone 4Ss. they gave me a free replacement phone, but it's exactly the same.

for such an expensive toy, it sure cheapens the feel of it. especially when setting it down on a table.

just came from apple milton keynes yesterday because of the rattle from my iphone 4S.checked all the iphone 4S and iphone 4 on display and they all had rattles. the genious rep took my phone apart and did not find anything loose or whatsoever.they replaced my phone with a new one but it also has a rattle.the only reason why i accepted the replacement is because he took apart my phone.not happy with a phone that has been opened for nothing.also, a new phone with a fresh battery is a plus.i just dont mind it anymore because all of the floor display iphone 4S and 4's have rattles.

Just took my 4s back to the Apple store today to have it checked for the rattle which seems to be up near the camera area. Genius bar guy took it apart and said it was the vibrating mechanism that was bad, loose or whatever. They gladly gave me a new phone (great customer service Apple) but it seems after a little use this one rattles as well. Hard to tell if it has any negative effects on the performance of the phone but is annoying.

i too noticed the rattle upon recieving my iphone 4s....

i have owned every single iphone and have not had this problem before....

my iphone 4 which i got on release day did not have this problem... **** it didnt even have a bad death grip problem. (slightly but not as bad as most)

i was disapointed but acceptable to the 3gs release....

i was disappointed even further in this latest release.... (hardware wise)

theres obviously something not quite right inside for it to have multiple rattle spots inside....

i called applecare about this....

they refered me to the mac genius' and upon ariving at the closest apple store, i felt blown off by the rep upon hearing my problem... ( i was also having a problem connecting calls ) the calls would connect but the line would be dead on my end. they could hear me i could no hear them, only an echo of myself...

FIRST time EVER in the last 7 years ive been dealing with apple's customer service had i ever felt this way and im willing to say that it was a fluke, perhaps other issues are factoring into why my latest experience went that way, ( it was extreamly busy that day ) maybe the rep i got was just having an off day or something.

so i called applecare back,

they agreed that i should just send in my phone to either have it repaired or replaced.

they chose to replace,

received the phone in 3 business days

and this phone rattles even worse than the last one!!!!

point being, if u can live with it, and its not that bad, get over it, and you'll forget about it before you know....

now my phone rattles obnoxiously loud, and what do i do now? send it in again?!

i think not....

i will wait for the redesigned iphone 5 and hopefully they will get it right this time...

Yes the rattle redid almost eliminated when the camera af is used. If anything my rattle has got worse. No other top end phones do this. I would have thought Apple would have been on this like a shot, rather than let the customers fault find their product! I will be going to see them again an te answer that all iPhone 4s rattle isn't an acceptable answer. Pity I didn't go for a Samsung!
