iPhone 4S camera lens rattle

Hey all,

I hoped they'd fix this slightly annoying iPhone 4 issue for the 4S, but it seems like it's actually become worse, presumably because the 4S camera has five lenses as opposed to the 4's four. Here it is:

Hold your iPhone 4S so that it's upright and tap near the camera lens on the back. You'll hear the same rattling sound that you probably knew and 'loved' with the iPhone 4.

However, can anyone else confirm that tapping on the front, just to the left of the Home button, also rattles the lenses? It does on mine and I'm sure it didn't on the iPhone 4. Irritating...

Thanks!

J

I can confirm the rattle too.

I noticed it when I set down the phone on a table. I did also notice it in all of my former iPhones I can remember. I had the with my iPhone 4 in black and with my iPhone 4 in white. And now it's the same "issue" or noise on the 4S.

I think it is just a bit irritating that something is broken, but I never had further a problem or some kind of further restrictions.

No need to worry.

How loud is everyone's rattle, i notice mine, even when moving it from one hand to the other, surely this is not "normal". Rang apple, and the man said it did not sound normal at all, it should rattle slightly he said, due to the auto-focus mechanism, but it should not be noticeable when putting the phone down onto a surface or putting it into your hand.

I am taking it to an Apple store on saturday, hopefully to get a replacement, (i did ask what would happen if the people in the shop said it was normal, and the bloke said from my description i should get a replacement.)

Anyone else have a rattle that bad?, i would also say that my rattle has got worse.

Had the iphone the grand total of 3 days, and its already annoying.

on my 5th iPhone 4s now. everyone has rattled. some more than others. my latest one rattles the worst but the other issues that were causing me to have to swap out are gone or way better. so in my experiences i guess u just pick your poison and what your willing to put up with. whatever apple tells you will never be the same story. every 4s i have touched rattles. just some worse than others. the auto focus is what is causing it but some start off tighter than others but they all end up making about the same amount of rattle. doesn't seem to affect performance just really annoying in top of the line smart phone that retails for a lot of money.

Right, so your saying dont bother then?

I mean the phone is fine apart from in this area, my mates phone doesnt do it anywhere near as badly as mine, literally if i put the phone into my hand it rattles, if i put it down, it rattles, even if i tap the middle of the back of the phone (nowhere near the camera) it rattles.

Thing is i dont want to get a replacement that has a yellow screen or a loose home button.

Thing is i cant believe that they are all as bad a mine...

no i didn't say that. you can do whatever u want. my point was that all the 4s's rattle. I'm sure you can swap out if you want to. just saying that you run the risk of the rattle being the same or worse plus some other issue that might come up. I mean what do think they are doing with the tens of thousands of phones that have already been swapped out? they might get a new screen and faceplate but the inside of the phone remains the same. so what did they really fix? nothing. i guess it comes bk to customer service and how far apple wants to go to solve these issues, and so far they haven't done much of anything to make it rt.

well the longest i have had a 4s for is about a month. but after noticing the rattle on my first 4s and swapping it within days. i figured it wise to go over every inch of my new phone. so that is what i have done on my last 4 phones. what i have noticed is that every 4s rattled at the start. some louder or more lose than others. what i noticed on the ones that seemed to be tighter is that it didn't last very long. with normal use the rattle seemed to become louder and more noticeable. now this might not be the case with everyone. but in my experiences with dealing with this specific issue that is what i think is happening. again, i went through 5 phones in 3 months as well as touching every phone at my apple store plus all my friends/family with a 4s. every phone rattled at different levels. the thing that i don't know is that if the rattle will continue to get worse or if it reaches a point where it can't become anymore loose.

UPDATE:

rang apple yesterday, man said that the rattle was not normal no matter how loud and booked me in for a genius bar appointment. Today i decided to walk around town and go into every single mobile phone shop and ask if they had heard of this "issue", all bar none replied "no", but upon trying their own iphone 4s's they all noticed the rattle as well. Although none were as bad as mine. (so why are the care support so adament this is not normal?). I had to check, because my nearest apple store is 1 hour away and i dont want to turn up only for them to say "it's normal get over it".

So I rang apple support again this afternoon, to explain that i believe the issue is normal, the guy was not having any of it. And advised me to just go to my appointment and get it checked out.

So i thought, right, not getting anywhere, so i rang the actual apple store themselves (the shop, not the support line). I explained the problem, and that i had checked numerous other phones by checking in shops and asking others. He then told me he would be completely honest and then said "The iPhone 4S DOES RATTLE". Although he did say mine sounded worse than the "norm", i.e mine rattles when i move it from my right hand to my left and vice versa obviously, also when i tap the apple logo on the back, also when i place the phone down (even gently).

He told me to come into the store i would most likely get a replacement.

So all this begs the question, if this really is normal, why on earth are the support people sending folks to apple stores and arranging replacements. (and why are they adament that the phones should not rattle).

Just to let all you folks who like me were quite shocked to find out that the phone you just bought under the impression it was a quality "bit of kit" RATTLES!!! it turns out it is normal, but if it is really noticeable, then maybe it isnt.

Dont you just love it when things are conclusive. I mean the guy from the store said "So how bad is it?", and i said "thats the point" I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT BAD IS!!!!

lol gettin the run around from ol apple huh. the rt hand doesn't know what the left is doing. shocker. like i said before my rattle on my 5th 4s is the worst yet. but what do u know, my other main issues are gone or way better. so what do u do. i'm sure i could go for #6 but than what. end up with less rattle but more static during calls. maybe a worse wash out on flash pictures. or wait maybe a nice yellow tint on my screen. yup these were all common issues on my previous 4 phones. i guess the best thing to do is find a replacement u can live with and sit on it for a while and see if apple addresses any of these issues.

I have the same thing. It wouldn't bother me, but I use my camera for shooting video while it's mounted in my car. the vibration is super annoying. In the video it's about all you can hear. If you wanted to keep any of the cockpit sounds or exhaust saounds good luck, because the super annoying rattle kills about all the other sounds. I thought it was the mount itself, then it dawned on me that it might be the phone rattle. Today my buddy had his 4S with him and we shot a quick video. Perfectly clear. We shook his phone and no rattle. The crazy part is we got our phones on the same day, at the same store, at the same time. I guess there must be like 500:1 odds your camera will rattle. Kinda ***** since shooting video was a big selling point for this phone. I guess I'll go roll the dice and see if I can find a rattle free one at the apple store. Maybe I'll pretend it's Christmas and just shake every iPhone box and see if I can find one without the rattle.
