Battery drain with iOS 5 on iPhone 4

Is anyone else seeing an issue with terrible battery drain after installing iOS 5 on iphone 4? I've read through a plethora of "possible fixes" on the net, but nothing seems to work. Full charge was completed last night at 0100 and now it's at 25%! I could easily go the whole day with "normal" usage prior to the iOS upgrade. Thoughts?

Agree. 5.0.1 didn't fix the battery issue; it gotten worse I don't use iCloud. Everything is set to off (location, notification, fetch, etc) including 3G and CELLULAR DATA (that's another issue though, excessive data usage charge even when I don't use it). Apple, please fix battery and data problem 😟

After using Blackberry for many many years, I made the leap that I should've taken a long time ago. As of yesterday, I am a proud iPhone 4S user on the CSpire network in Mississippi.

This battery issue has made a very bad impression on a first-time iPhone user. I've had an iPad 2 for a few months and have been overly impressed with it. The iPad 2 battery life (even with 5.0.1) is incredible. Multiple days of heavy usage on a single charge. I was expecting the same performance, or better from the 4S. Not so. I'm under 50% battery life by noon with minimal voice usage and nearly all notifications, bluetooth and WiFi turned off. We have a cellular repeater in our office building so I'm maxed out all day on my cellular signal.

Please Apple, don't make me regret the decision I made. I have confidence that you will provide a solution very soon.

After reading many of the answers here it appears that there are such a wide range of answers geography must be playing a part with how well your battery lasts. I have an iPhone 4 which replaced an iPhone 3g there were times when the 3g would get me through a day into a night however the 4 has never been the same. It was better when new but then one iOS4 upgrade seemed to destroy batterylife and before i upgraded to iOS5 a full charge at 8am would see a dead phone before 4pm. Now with iOS5 I still have some charge up til 8pm. As i live in a rural area with often little or no signal coverage and fairly poor GSM singnal.. no 3G for miles, there is no doubt my battery appear to drain a lot quicker then when I am in an area where there is a better network of local masts. Ifoudn my old mobiles also had a tendancy of draining quicker when in areas of poor signal for prolongued periods.

On the other hand does it bother me that my wifes mobile goes on for days without a recharge.. basically no, it's a phone all it does is ring and text and the most exciting thing it can do is change ringtone if you can ever understand the settings. All the services and features all smartphones can now run and the tricks the apps can play no wonder they squander charge. I make sure i have a usb cable and charging option available when i am out.

I tried something this morning that seems to have made a HUGE difference in my battery life. Like all of you, my battery on my 4S (5.0.1) was draining at an unbelieveable rate with minimal usage. Originally, I updated to 5.0.1 via OTA. This is when the battery issue became a nightmare. So, this morning I hooked up to iTunes and restored my phone an reloaded 5.0.1 via USB cable. Upon restoration, I didn't restore any of my original settings except for a camera app that I bought and my corporate and personal email accounts.

My plan is to slowly start re-adding apps to see if any one in particular causes a battery meltdown. As of now, its been almost 2 hours since I reloaded 5.0.1 and my battery just dropped to 99%. For now, it looks like we might be onto something. If anyone elses tries this, please post your experience for the rest of us.

P.S. I also disabled "Settings > Location Settings > System Services > Setting Time Zone (turned OFF). I read in another post that this was a big factor in draining the battery. This can be disabled with minimal consequences. It just means you have to manaully set your time of you change time zones.

Just got my iPhone 4S and noticed right off the bat how quickly the battery drained. IOs 5.01 seems to have made it worse. Frustrating to say the least as this drainage has to be damaging the battery. My iPhone 3G was crippled by an Os update, I'm on my 3rd MacBook pro adapter. I sure hope Apple resolves this soon. Getting more and more disappointed with these issues and the way apple is dealing, or not dealing with it as the case may be. Turninig on and off services or apps as a solution is ridicous.

Having just become an iPhone user a week ago, I've been so very disappointed with my iPhone 4S regarding this battery issue; however, I have had good responses from Apple Support, and I would encourage you to create a case with Apple if you have not done so already -- in particular they have told me that they have not had many actual support requests for this issue, despite the flurry of activity on the forums. They have been working with me, and over the past couple of days have loaded a program on my phone to monitor battery usage. They removed the file today and sent it to their engineers for study. I don't know if that will lead to anything, but I am at least somewhat encouraged that they are trying.

Bought my IPhone 4 in July 2011. Everything worked fine. Upgraded to OS 5 and the battery life plummetted.

Uprgraded to 5.01 and things seem worse. I have shut down almost everything including Bluetooth but it makes no difference. Just turning on the IPhone drains the battery.

Apple definitely needs to address this vital issue or give up the business to the Androids. I cannot in any conscience advise anybody to buy an IPhone until the problems are solved.

I had this problem with my iPhone 4 after upgrading it to iOS 5.0.1 last Thursday night. On Friday, my "normal" use (which usually takes me down to 65-75% by the end of the work day) ran me down to 25%. On Saturday, I noticed that the battery was dropping by about 25% every 1.5 hours, without using it at all!

I did not change any settings, enable or disable any apps, etc. different from what I was using before the update.

I saw a comment on the forums here recommending opening a support case with Apple so I made an appointment for the Genius Bar for yesterday (Sunday) afternoon. I backed up by phone before I went, and the Genius recommended swapping my phone for a new one. I took the new handset home and restored from backup (it came pre-loaded with 5.0.1) and now the battery issue seems to be resolved.

The Genius told me that they have been seeing a lot of issues with both the 4 and the 4S and for some reason the update seems to "fry" the battery on some handsets.

I also saw a fix regarding updating iTunes for Windows and then re-syncing. This isn't an option for me since I use iTunes for Mac and was already running the latest updated version prior to installing the 5.0.1 iOS update, and I installed the update via USB from iTunes rather than over-the-air...

For anyone whose phone is under warranty or has the AppleCare coverage, do yourself a favor and get down to the Genius Bar at the Apple Store!

An opinion of a iPhone 4 iOS 5 user that did not upgrade to 5.0.1..

Reading all the reporting issues related to battery drainage, I am certainly that the issue is not the 5.0.1 upgrade iOS, but the process in which the update was performed:

I tend to agree with one of the opinions I read, that while upgrading some application were opened and got stuck in a loop which drains the battery.

Safe upgrade: kill all open tasks and reset the iPhone to factory setting, then do an update.

Made an appointment at the genius bar and had someone look at my phone. The woman who helped me claimed that people aren't coming in to that store with iPhone 4s battery issues, which may be true, but it's as if she were trying to say that there are no issues with the iPhone 4s and iOS 5.0 and 5.01 and that my case is an isolated incident - it was a little insulting. She looked at the phone stats and stated something to the effect that 8 hours of use/standby time| last charge was "Really good". At the point it was checked it was almost dead, and I am not a heavy user. That is nowhere near the claimed 200 hours standby time. I couldn't even get the claimed audio listening time of 40 hours if I wanted to as the phone will only hold a charge for 8 to 12 hours with minimal use before it's dead.

We did an update at the store as a new phone and then I re-synced my apps when I got home and it's the same - battery draining quickly.

I was frustrated before but even more so now, what with the fact that Apple employees won't even acknowledge that there is something wrong with their f*****g hardware or software.

As I stated before, I had an iPhone 3G that was crippled with iOS 3 - apps became unresponsive, glitchy. The phone dragged. I feel like Apple should have given me a discount on the iphone 4s for having broken a perfectly good iphone 3g. I looked forward to having a phone with no issues, but unfortunately, that hasn't been my experience.

I picked up a Mophie Juice Pack Plus to get some more mileage out of a charge until Apple gets their **** together with the new update.

I'm a pretty long time Apple user. Apple, you're bringing me down..

p.s. apple (please send me copies of receipts for the defective MacBook Pro adapters I purchased so I can partake in the class action lawsuit and get my $160 back for the two adapters I shouldn't have had to buy had you made an adapater that didn't have quite the planned obsolescence as they turned out to ; P )

I may have found something. I had Twitter disabled in my notifications, but got a tweet today that popped up on my home screen. Didn't know I had this enabled. At the bottom of the Twitter notification settings is the home scrren toggle. Since disabling this, battery life seems better. Considering there is no setting for frequency of checking for tweets, it appears the phone is continually connecting to wifi to check for new tweets.

If you have Twitter integrated

1. Go to settings->Notifications

2. Click on Twitter tab

3. Turn off notification center and view in lock screen.

I have been having the same problems after updating to ios 5.01 on my iphone 4. Yesterday I used my iphone until the phone shut off due to low battery or empty battery. after leaving it to charge all of last night I woke up this morning and it is not losing power fast I used it for 10-15 minutes on 100 percent power it doesnt seem to be losing power while locked in my pocket as quick either.
