Can everyone who is upset with Apple not addressing this issue PLEASE do their part and go write a quick note on Apple's Feedback page for the iPhone to let them know that we are all upset about this.
Please go here and leave a short note: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html
Same problem here. Very slight static. Can barely hear it sometimes, but annoying on long calls.
I experienced this at first and was quite concerned. I do believe, however, that it was an issue of poor network coverage/high use in my area. I ended up making some calls to test it and I no longer heard the static.
I'm on AT&T.
Its definitely not a coverage issue for me. Me 3GS worked flawlessly for two years on AT&T in my area.
I still wouldn't rule it outl. My 3G was perfectly fine in the same area... no static or anything. Was complaining to my friends about the static I was getting on my first few days with the 4S, which is why I thought it was a H/W issue. Now, I do not notice it.
Not sure what changed... but I was getting noticeable static last week but am no longer really hearing it which is why I thought that it had to do with AT&T's networks being overrun with all the new 4S activations, browsing, etc.
I'm back on my 3GS and everything is fine, now.
Calls are crystal clear and I'm relieved this ordeal is finally over.
I submitted a bug report on the feedback form, cancelled my applecare + (the echo kicked in while I was talking with the agent, too) and I returned the 4s to the AT&T store.
It was painful because I loved everything else about the 4s. :(
But everyone I talked to was super-helpful and accommodating.
I think it's a combination of issues but I don't think it has to do with load.
I'm a night owl and the echo would kick in on calls as late as 3am.
I do think it might be tower specific and maybe even a software bug combo, but until they figure it out, I have to be able to make calls.
I'll be monitoring the discussion to see what happens!
Good luck everybody!
Apple just released an update for iOS (5.0.1 beta) to developers. I'm downloading it now to see if the update has any effect on the call quality.
Huge news...potentially! New phone today is doing the same thing.
similar experience on AT&T. The first few days the call quality was crystal clear, even better than my iPhone 4. Almost overnight I started getting static in the earpiece and people saying they couldn't hear me (as if the mic was cutting out). Battery drain was also extremely fast.
I have done two restores. The battery is much better (but I also disbled the Exchange account). The static comes and goes (its there on about 6/10 calls) and for me it's not faint, but very noticeable.
I haven't tried putting my SIM in the old iP4 but might this week. My gut is still a network issue vs. the phone but I am hoping I'm wrong. Apple pushing a software fix will come a lot quicker than AT&T patching their network. The other thing to keep in mind is this is a new Qualcomm chipset never before used in the iPhone. Could be the real culprit and maybe a network patch is what's required.
I never experienced an echo, so that is an entirely different symptom than I was describing. The only time i get an echo is when I talk to someone who is on bluetooth but that doesn't have much to do with my handset.
iOS 5.0.1 beta didn't fix the audio issues for me.
Just out of curiousity, for those experiencing echo, are you using the headset that comes with the iPhone? I've been reading a few articles about this issue and it seems they have narrowed it down to using a headset while on a call. I use the headset about 95% of the time on calls.
I never use headset or Bluetooth. I get the benefits of the echo built directly into my ear piece. It is magical.
I am now on my 5Th iPhone 4S and still the same problem.
Nothing has cganged with the issue. What is however diffrent, I finally got a Genoius to say they have heard of the issue and I wasent alone.
Supprisingly I was told that my previous 4S is apparently on its way to the engineers at Apple to evaluate the issue.
Well there goes the headset theory. I just hope they find a solution soon. This *****. Apple should be more aware of the problem now. If you search on Google for "iPhone 4S echo" a bunch of websites have written about it in the last few days.
I heard from dev that problem still exist on beta 5.0.1 ....
