I am glad this thread is getting bigger. I can't believe the buzzing that is occuring in every single Iphone 4S.

It doesn't... Mine has the problem; my sister's and my friend's does not have this issue... Or rather they might do but it is so quiet it is almost impossible to hear... Mine gets louder ( i think) when it is plugged into the power also.

@izian: well.. my sennheiser headphones were sold as "iphone" headphones, so you would guess that they are shielded. especially when paying €100 for them

I tried again with the apple provided headphones and listened carefully ... now I can hear the static too even with the apple headphones. it's very quiet though and almost not noticeable. guess it makes sense that I can hear the static louder with quality and inear headphones.

it's not thaaat big of a deal for me .. I either stop using headphones while making calls (and only use them while listening to music) or I'll probably get used to it. still .. you would expect good and clear audio quality for a €900 phone + €100 headphones

Yeah; the interference you are getting is interference from the antenna signal; the static that, I believe, the OP and myself and other people since are discussing in here is the buzzing (GSM) / clicking(3G/UTMS) that the phone is making if you hold your ear to the phone; a noise that you can hear in phone calls and in video recordings...

Sounds to me like your headphones might be shielded; but the new phone ahs a stronger signal... Or the are shieded but are defective? I've used a pair of in ear headphones, quite good quality, probably only 30 Euro / £20 or so; never ever had any interference on them from the iPhone 3G , 4 and 4S.

Correct. The static is coming from inside the phone somewhere, but it appears that the physical earpiece itself is the source because probably of the opening being able to transmit the sound more clearly. If you haold any part of the phone, even the back of the phone to your ear you can still hear the static. I don't miss it at all!!!

oh ok..then I'm really talking about something different. without headphones I don't hear any static.

I tried to put the back of the phone to my ear as someone in this thread suggested and I could hear a small buzzing sound. though I would have never noticed it if it weren't for this thread .. but nothing out of the earpiece..

I think that the Qualcom chips have manufacturing defects, or that apple is using them outside of their specified range of operational power. The noise I'm hearing sounds a lot like raw signal being amplified to the audible range. If we can hear noise, it means the chip isn't working efficiently, and it's physically vibrating a component to make that noise, which is bothersome to me.

You don't have to have much to make noise; alot of electrical components are capable of making noise; capacitors are a huge culprit...

My graphics cards on my computer make whining and "clicking" noises (not real clicking but like soft electrical clicky noises; as they display intense graphics on the screen. This is probably the chipset and the millions of transistors getting pushed to max.

I agree that the Qualcomm is likely to be a culprit here; but wether they are being used outside of operational parameters or not is anyone's guess... If they are; prepare for this to be fixed in a firmware update. If not then it could be the quality (or lack of) in the manufacturing of the chip that's being used.

When I get my replacement; I will report back here if the replacement has the issue or if it doesn't...

My main worry is that my replacement wont fix this; and instead introduces some other issue (my current 4S is absolutely perfect in screen, camera and battery).
