Ah bawlls... My sister's phone also has this issue after all; just not as loud / high pitched.... When recording a silent room on video cam the sound doesn't really get recorded into the video like it does on mine...
So I hope a replacement will be like hers...
If it is right that this affects all handselts; maybe a firmware fix will sort this out...
Just got a hardware replacement. Hope the issue is not present.
Got an AT&T 4s. Whenever I use the headphones to make a call. After couple minutes the party on the other side starts to hear an echo and static. I have to hang up and redial the call. This happens consistently. 😟
I recieved my iphone 4s after ordering online from Sprint.
Just want to say I have the same static / buzzing as well. Haven't put the phone up to my ear when playing a game or anything, but I've definitely heard it while placing a call.
Finally got fed up with it so I did a little research and stumbled upon this thread. Seems like a common issue.
I think it is; I have a replacement arriving asap; and am going to report back if it fixes the issue. I am not hopeful though.
I hope Apple are aware and look into a firmware fix if this is in a lot of handsets... It wouldn't bother be except it is picked up on the video recording.
Same problem here with a new iPhone black 64Gb in Germany 😟 I hope it's a Software problem and will be solved with the upcoming iOS 5.0.1
Just confirming same problem. I purchased the iphone 4S on 10-14-11 in San Francisco, the mother ship, in memory of Steve. The phone gave me immediate problerms - echoes and static when using an Apple earbud earpiece. Changing the earpiece does not make a difference. If you remove the earpiece and use the phone without one, the echo goes away. Similarly, if you use the speakerphone and not the earpiece, the echo goes away. I worked with tech support and wiped the settings and set it up as a new iphone - no luck. It did not address the problem. I tried using the phone without restoring my backed up files and it still had the echo and interference. Today, I went to Apple today and they swapped it out for a new phone. I have the same problem with the new phone and exactly the same problem. As I am still in the 30 day buyer's remorse period, I am going to return the phone and try to reinstate my old original iphone, which has worked perfectly for 4 years. It makes me sad that the 4S does not work, but I must have a functioning phone.
I have the Iphone 32gig on att network in PA. Im having the static and echo from the phone. havent tries ear buds yet. hope its fixed soon.
Tried my old iPhone 4, wife's iPhone 4, and the new 4S tonight. The call/earpiece static is present n all 3. It's just more noticeable in the 4S due to the louder earpiece.
This could be different from everyone else's issue but I am going to hang on to the 4S and wait it out.
Mmm... Me too. In my case i hear a static noise when the phone is using a 3g data connection (wifi has to be disabled). Works fine with wifi and edge. You can test it using the speedtest.net app and bringing your phone to your ear while doing a 3g speed test
I've just called apple support and they told me they were not aware of this issue! I've told them about this topic, let's hope about an iOS update. I think that it's useless to go changing the phone with another 4s...most of them, if not all, appear to be affected by this issue...
I have the exact same problem. I was on a call for about 25minutes then out of nowhere a static sound overpowered the voice of the person i was talking to over the phone. I love my iphone 4S (64 gig), and i hope they fix the issue on iOS5.0.1!!!! 😟
Same problem on my Sprint iPhone 4S 32. The Apple store was nice enough to replace mine, but I was bummed to turn on the new one and to experience the same static issue. No echo though (yet?)... Funny, everyone I have spoken to about this (Sprint, Apple phone line listed on this web page, Apple store employees), seems to act like I am the first one to have this happen. I am glad I found this discussion. Not so crazy (nor particular about sound quality) after all. ha. Maybe I am the first to report it here in my area (SLC), but it seems somewhat pervasive. Hope they can fix it, or I hope I can return it before I get locked in to 2 years of this.
Here is the diagnostic from the Apple store;
Issue Verified: Yes
Known Liquid Damage: No
Issue: There is a dent distortion when the audio is low on a phone call.
Steps to reproduce: Made several calls. Happened to all of them. DFU. Issue persists.
Proposed Resolution: Replace phone.
Cosmetic Condition: New
from what i can gather, the strength and volume of the buzzing depends on your environment and where you are.
New update. I went to a different location other than home and work and sat in my car where it was very quiet. I had full bars and there was no buzzing while using maps or speedtest. There has to be something environmental about this issue. At work the buzzing is so bad its unbelievable. My friend has same phone and which his buzzes, its not as bad as mine at the exact same location. He does have a bumper installed though.
Went to the Apple Store today (again) since my replacement is doing the same noise. I tried to tell the employee how I could hear the sound by just opening Speed Test App and holding the phone up to my ear (great suggestion whoever that was). He, of course, didn't even try that. He suggested that I go to AT&T and get a replacement SIM Card. An interesting suggestion for sure, since they moved the one that came with the original phone over to the replacement a few weeks ago.
Alas, still the same problem with a new SIM Card. I'm begining to just think this is how it's going to be for the life of the phone. I don't see how a software update can fix it and Apple seems to not be acknowleging it.
