The issue is you can't hear it at apple store either because whatever the interference is doesn't exist there or it's too loud there. I could not duplicate it at apple store try gave me new phone anyways which is just as bad if not worse but I didn't hear the noise until I got to work. It was fine in the mall. I have a feeling baseband software can fix this

There is another thread that offers a pretty good explanation that the earpiece (or mic) volume is amplified on the 4S to better work with Siri. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3475371?answerId=16670788022#16670788022

Since I notice the hiss on my old 4 *and* the 4S, I am inclined to believe this. The hiss / static / crackling sounds are on both phones, just more noticeable on the 4S. Also, I recorded video in a silent room with both phones. The sound was very noticeable on the 4S video but also present on the 4.

If there is to much background noise around you, then its very hard to hear. but in a typical quiet setting, I gaurantee you will hear it, and I find it doesn't even have anything to do with signal strength. The noiseseems to always be present on all phones, but a lot of people can hear it, while others can't. It is annoying and I hope Apple can fix this.

Myself and others have been able to capture the sound. I was also able to send my recordings to a contact at Apple. Its been almost a week and my contact hasn't even heard from the engineers, which has him perplexed as well.

I am going to my local Apple Store, this afternoon, to try out my 5th iPhone 4S, in hopes to rid the noise, and pray that there will be no echos or camera or battery issues to add to my woes. By the way, my very first 4S had the echoing and static.

Apple needs to step their game up.

Wish me luck.

The static is very light but I hear it on calls. I have not made many calls on my phone so I can not say for sure that it is on every call but I do know it has been on more than one. I have not experienced any echoes however, I have wih previous phones and it usually had something to do with the carrier and a bad connection. I recommend you contact your carrier about that issue of it continues because there may be a update they need to push out on their end. Is anyone else experiencing low volume in general, when streaming music on pandora I have to have he sound turned all the way up and the speaker phone and ringer volumes are not that loud either. I was concerened because I noticed that the sound is stronger on one side of the phone than the other until I read that one side is a microphone. I was trying not to be biased because my previous phone had a wonderful speakerphone (HTC Tilt 2) but it too had a low volume when ringing and such. I do want this static issue to be solved because I paid too much for this phone to have crappy calls.
