@ AZERO - Don't be so nieve. You are NOT GETTING a new phone when you swap it out. They already have MANY returns and you are either getting a refurbished iPhone 4S or you are getting a recycled 4S from the last customer. Regardless, you are not getting a new one.
Doesn't that **** you off a litle bit? You either paid 200, 300 or 400 for this phone and they are giving you a remanufactured phone at best. You paid for a NEW phone.
Whatever, if you don't think something is seriously wrong with the situation then you need to pull your head from under the rock its been in since 14 October. I want my brand new iphone 4S replaced with a brand new iPhone 4S. Not someone elses problem phone.
I'd like for my BRAND NEW phone to work. That's all I want. I don't wnat your old phone!!!!!
This is what I expect as well but it is good to hear someone with the same opinion, though it is one that I'm uneasy about. I will likely wait a week or two and see if I can tolerate the sound for the interim until there is a solution or it has been verified by apple. Then again, if it is something I can't handle, I may just return it and go back to my iPhone 4...
Thanks for the advice.
For what's it worth, my experience so far: I do get static while on calls but it is very quiet. I can hear it only if I really know that I need to look (or hear) for it. Also, on a lot of times, when I place a call, I get the static in the first 3-5 seconds while the call is connecting and then the noise goes away. After that the call is crystal clear. My theory (with no scientific explanation) is that this has something to do with the dynamic antenna switching or whatever they claim the iPhone does (honestly, who the f cares if the phone switches antenna intelligently or not, right?) and hence I get it only for a few initial seconds on the call.
I am on ATT and in Scottsdale, AZ - one of the areas where ATT network really ***** a** big time.
I did go to a Genuis to have the phone checked out but obviously he was in a denial phase. I don't want to swap the phone since sounds like there are high chances my next phone will do the same or could give even worse performance. I will let Apple figure it out if there is anything with either software and/or hardware and then go from there.

Actually, Cdellamura, the replacement devices are either refurbished or new. Some of the refurbished devices have had issues in the past but are checked under quality control and put back onto the market after repairs and replacements. Either way, Apple is not out to get you... they are a company that cares more about your satisfaction that most any other company on this planet.
I agree with you that it is enfuriating, but the more time passes, the more people will experience this same problem and the quicker apple will be forced to respond to it (and hopefully correct it).
One more thing... I am interested to hear if your "new" replacement does or does not have the issue. My first phone came in the same box that your first one did and both of those had these issues to begin with, so my guess is that this will not guarantee your fix.
@ Cdellamura
You seem really angry. If you returned your phone within 14 days of purchase, you can get a brand new one. Outside of this time window you get a refurb. That is Apple's policy. I doubt Apple can do anything to make someone like you happy. I highly recommend you return your phone for a refund and get something else.
@ Cdellamura
I just checked with the Apple Store where I exchanged my phone. I spoke with the manager. I was within my 14 day window and received a brand new phone. It even had the plastic stickers on the front and back. The manager told me that Apple DOES NOT recycle phones in the store. Every single return goes back to Apple, and the stores are provided with refurb phones from Apple. There is no way you will get a defective phone that was "recycled" from another customer unless it first went back to Apple, was properly refurbished and shipped back out to the local store. Many customers prefer refurbished, since they go through a tighter QC process than brand new products and technicians end up spending more time with them.
I think you should stop listening to the voices.
LIKE I SAID. Either a refurbished phone or a recycled one. Bottom line is that you paid full price and now after a fews days or weeks of using a brand new phone, you are not using a refurbished phone. If you idiots are willing to accept a refurb in place of a premium product that NEVER WORKED TO BEGIN WITH, then that's your own rediculous fault. I'm not willing and I won't accept it. I paid for a new "working" phone and I will continue to request brand new phones until I get one that works properly. If the phone breaks at a later time for some other reason, then and only then will I be willing to accept a refurb.
On another note, it's people like you and the other guy that makes it so difficult for people like me to be treated the way we ALL should be treated. Go ahead, lay down to the big machine. Get walked all over. It seems like you are used to it. That's sad in my book.
When I get my replacement, as I stated earlier, I will update the post. @AZREO - you clearly have a social anxiety disorder. Stand up for yourself and be heard.
I totally agree.
I paid for a new Phone, and I expect a new one defect free. I am now on my fifth phone and it makes the static noise.
This is getting ridiculous and its high time Apple address this or its going to spin out of control like antennagate.
All i want is a Zero Defect iPhone 4S that Apple advertised so wonderfully.
Quality equates to Zero Defect - getting it right the first time, not the second time. Afterall the requirements are clear and given. Do customers want a phone that buzzes when you make calls?
Also, it is not about getting a new phone but a zero defect phone that is plainly new. If Apple can assure us that the phone is new, then please plainly state it. The silence could mean that they may be refurbishing and recycling the phones and passing it around to customers who are ignorant that they are paying a full price for a refurbished phone.
Anyway, I am still waiting to exchange mine because I have no confidence yet that exchanging would resolve the problem. Maybe a week later...
Hi guys;
So I had the same issue. And I called up AppleCare and because I was within my 14 days I've received a new one. Properly new as I had to wait for it to be built.
It arrived in the post just like the original.
It has exactly the same issue.
So brand new shiny handset has same issue.
I just found posts on another forum complaining of the same issue as this in the iPhone 4 CDMA / Verizon model. That uses the new Qualcomm chip too doesn't it?
That's gotta be the issue here. Cheap Asian chips or just a design flaw. I guess not as many people owned the iPhone 4 CDMA model as the 4S so not as widely noted. But it's the same sounds that it makes...
I also have a 4s with the static noise. We do not have an Apple store anywhere near where I live. I bought my through an AT&T store and it was shipped to me.
Can I take mine to an AT&T store and have them replace it? Or does it have to be through Apple?
(wondering even though I know a replacement will probably have the same issue)
Yes, you can go to the ATT store and request for a potential replacement. However, in my opinion, the guys at Apple store are more open to listening to your issues and willing to offer a potential fix. Good luck.
UPDATE: After all of the hooplah of getting a brand new iPhone (which I tracked from China via UPS) I STILL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM!
It looks like I'll be requesting another new iPhone.
I think it's time for CNN to get ahold of this.
EVERYONE - WRITE CNN/FOX WHATEVER. Tell them about the problem. It's the only way Apple will fix it.
I just sent Jazeera International & CNN links to this page and youtube video of the problem.
