@Kliffy - good work, I sent CNN and iReport on the iPhone. With several links: Here is the email I sent. EVERYONE should blast this out:
I hope this doesn't seem trivial to your news group but I do think it's effecting thousands of people. As you may know, the iPhone 4S came out in October. There were a couple of minor issues that Apple acknowledged and they have put out a software update to address it. The OTHER problem that they are refusing to acknowledge is static while talking on the phone. They have sold thousands and thousands of these devises and are replacing them with refurbished devises that still have the same static problem.
We, the consumer, have paid 200,300 and 400 dollars for these devices and Apple is refusing to acknowledge that there is a problem. I have literally spendt hours on the phone talking to these people and everyone I speak to acts like it's the first time they have heard about it. I have requested my money back and they refuse to return my money. They have a 14 day return policy and my iPhone 4s has never worked correctly. I complained 10 days after the purchase date and they swapped it out with a refurbished phone. After that one didn't work correctly, they finally (after a lot of complaining and two more hours on the phone) said they would send me a brand new phone. I received this phone today and it has the exact same problem.
I know it's not an ATT network problem. They said it's coming from the device itself, it's happening on other networks, I've used the phone in several different states and I recently switched back to an older version of the iPhone and it had no static. We are getting ripped off by Apple and I really need your exposure to force them to correct the problem. It's my fear that they will simply deny that there is a problem and never acknowledge/fix it until it gets national exposure. It's trivial in itself but this really is effecting a lot of people.

I'm simply asking that you please look into this and see if you can help us out.
It's time to end the Apple company by discouraging people to buy iphones. It seems that it's all about quantity over quality.
I already alerted 'Consumer Reports' and got a response from them on the 28th of october regarding the static/wild hard drive sound. I pasted a portion of their response to me below.
"Thank you for taking the time to contact Consumer Reports®. I want to express how much we value your choice of our products and services to help you make informed purchasing decisions.
You've provided us with important feedback on your iPhone 4S. I can certainly understand your concerns.
As the model is still new, we currently don't have ratings for the iPhone 4S. In our December 2011 issue we give a preliminary report of the model and its new features. Our readers' feedback plays a strong role in the work that we do. Because of this I have taken the liberty of personally sharing your feedback with the appropriate members of our staff for their review and consideration..."
Not much but atleast I gave it a try. Hopefully they'll actually look into the sound, thus incetivising Apple to bump up the priority of this issue.
I also plan to record the sound again from this fifth iPhone 4S that I am on. Sounds just like phones 1-2-3-and 4. My iPhone 3G never ever had made the noise.
Not just that, it's time to discourage people from apple iphones. It seems that it's all about quantity than qualities.

That is not what we are trying to accomplish. The folks in this thread like the phone. Its just that we want the noise gone. Not the company. Please leave the trolling outside of this forum.
I just swapped mine at the Apple Store and the new one is the same. I'll give them another call but I guess I'll just live with it for a while until some more reliable units come out
iPhone 4s is great. I love it. But I get the yucky feeling after every call. Hearing the tick ticking tick sound is like a problem that begs to be solved. I doubt apple will sweep it under the carpet being an excellent company all these years. Unfortunately quality control is never easy with third party vendors. I really hope this is not a design issue. It would mean that that one piece in the system of 5000 pieces was left out in the design. Jaguar had it hard when their automatic drive failed. They had to recall thousands of cars. I hope apple will do what is right for themselves and their customers quickly.
I got my new iPhone on November 11, but I have the same problem
and the company denied refund and exchange for this problem... It's frustrating
I hate Apple They make 300$ junk toy
Since this is going to the press anyway, it would be lovely for apple to say something about this defect before the press creates a new staticgate. @ Apple, save some face and PR and please acknowledge the problem. I would rather spend my money on your wonderful products than return a faulty one for a full refund.
Just to add to this discussion, I live in a very quiet apartment and noticed the static issue in my 4S on day one. It happens in both my wife's White 16GB and my White 64GB.
After a week I returned mine to the Apple Store and was given a brand new White 64GB on the spot ... they just took my word for it and swapped phones. The new White 64GB has the exact same problem, and only affects calls heard through the phone's earpiece and not over the headphone jack.
Just have to wait for them to figure this out.
someone just suggested to me that it could be a polarity issue between the two antennas.. I don't know much about this stuff but that sounds like a possibility ??
the 4S static is quite frustrating. i'm very disappointed that Apple hasn't acknowledged this problem
Same problem here. AT&T iPhone 4S in North Idaho / Spokane Washington. My wife usually keeps WiFi on all the time, and no GPS. There is static in the earpiece during calls.
I have the static noise problem, probably due to 3G Module.
When I deactivate the Cellular Data (Settings>General>Network>Cellular Data), the voice call goes fine without any noise. But with Cellular Dat on, I have the noise also during a call but in stand by mode.
Do you have any ideas if this could be fix by software upgrade or by replacing the phone? 🙂
