Same problem as you. The problem is not necessarily related to the provider (i'm French and this issue happens worldwide) but imho seems to be related to the 3G antenna.
By the way, i made the test and you're absolutely right, when there is no sim card inserted and you connect to the internet through Wi-Fi, the phone is 100% silent. I think this is a great step towards the explanation of this static noise and tends to confirm this is (again) an antenna issue.
I just got a replacement phone and it seems to have the same problem with the buzzing noise when on a call. Now I am thinking it is an issue with the antenna.
I noticed that when I have 3 bars or less the noise is at its loudest. I never in the 3 years I had my iPhone 3G ever experience this noise on my 3G with even just one bar.
I am again going to tell all experiencing this problem to send in feedback or else the folks at the apple store are going to look at you like you are crazy. Trying to demonstrate the problem at the store is very hard because of all the ambient noise from the crowds in the store. But it's clearly happening to more than just me and I am almost at the point of demanding a refund. Please send feed back! So they address this problem.
I came right back to the Apple Store where I got my replacement and trying to see if they'll swap again.
I was told once again by a manager that they don't care wants on their forums. Unbelievable. I'm now beginning to wonder do they even take the feedback seriously. I know I am not making this up. The sound reminds me of a Geiger counter or some mini hard drive constantly reading and writing.
Anyways I told the manager that his response was unacceptable. The noise is real and it happens whenever using the 3G Antenna. I'm not waiting for him to come out the back with his analysis. I'm trying to be polite but their dismissive attitude is rubbing me wrong.
If the stores worried about every post in the forum then the phone would have problems all types and solutions of all types with and without misdiagnosis and ultimately it would be very confusing. I'm pretty sure corporate is monitoring all the forums with a resolution to come soon
I just got off the phone with AT&T, and they said they are getting a large volume of calls on this topic. He said they are aware of the issue with the 4S. He said they think it is due to all the activations in a short time. Doesn't sound right to me, but I am trying it. They said they are resolving some of the issues by re-establishing the connection and re-registering the phone. They reset both of our phones and are calling back in three days to see if it worked.
That is the same issue I had while at the store trying to get the apple employee to hear the static. It was slammed so I even asked if she would go into the back of the store where it was quieter to get a better idea of it. Which she refused to do but still replaced the phone anyway. New one has same issue. 4S 16 white sprint
I had originally assumed it was a defective earpiece speaker, and just had my iPhone exchanged. However, the new unit exhibits the same problem. I also had assumed that it was correlated only with phone calls. I now see that the problem is not the speaker (the sound comes from the device itself, I can hear it through the back plate of the phone) and it happens whenever voice or 3G data is active.
I tested against my current iPhone 4 using the Speedtest.net app to download a bunch of data while I listened with my ear against the phone.
iPhone 4 GSM on Wi-Fi: no noise
iPhone 4 GSM on 3G: no noise
iPhone 4S GSM on Wi-Fi: no noise
iPhone 4S GSM on 3G: continuous crackling noise
In other words, it seems to confirm that there's some issue with the electronics associated with the cellular antennas, whether on voice or data. The noise when just using data isn't a major issue, but it clearly is when making a voice call.
Got another replacement iPhone 4S from the Apple store from the manager, and we'll see if this at least minimizes the fuzzy crackling sound during calls. I have to give the manager credit despite being dismissive about the forums, he did try to resolve the issue as best he could.
The lesson I learned is Feedback > forums. The sooner it gets acknowledged by the engineers, the sooner they'll address it. that's when a real solution can be arrived at regarding this issue.
Good luck all.
I am having the same issue with my 32gb white 4S. I really hope that they come up with a solution fast. It's extremely annoying. I never had this problem with my 3GS. I will wait about another week to see if the problem is fixed. If not I will have to exchange at an Apple store, however it seems as though most people who have exchanged are having the same issue on their new phones. 😟
I got my replacement from the Apple Store on Friday and it does the exact same thing as my first one. This is kinda disappointing considering I payed full price for this phone. I'm considering just going back to my iPhone 4, since I never had a problem with it.
Same issue. Very annoying! I don't want to use it to make calls.
The noise ist not really a problem or gest annoying when you use, lets say the Music App or Facebook. But when you need to put the phone right beside yiur ear to make a call, this sound is not acceptable.
Anyone who got a replacement and is not experiencing the noise with the new one?
So far, after 4 days with replacement 4s 64 (orange uk), haven't had static but been iin good 3G signal areas unlike previously.
As far as I can tell, this noise has nothing to do with the signal quality of the 3G.
I hear the sound in areas with good and bad 3G signal.
Please can everybody make sure they officially complain about this issue, so apple will take notice. Follow the link below for feedback form:
