Hi
Same issues here.
I've called Apple and they were kind enough to change my phone, but the new phone has the same issue.
They are sending me a 3rd phone. Hoping this one will not have the same issue.
I notice the issue when calling, using SIRI or when recording videos.
I hope apple has a plan to fix this. Got the phone from Fido in Canada, don't know if they are willing to refund me.
Any solutions?
I too am on my third replacement, got it yesterday from the Apple store. Same issue with the digital noise/crackling sound, and today the echoing started again. So this time I spoke with AT&T about the echoing and the rep said they are aware of the issue. Apparently that issue is more wide spread. She told me there is work already being done in my area, apparently upgrading to 4G. She said that by tomorrow afternoon they'll be done and they will call me on friday to see if things improve by then.
I am crossing my fingers that Apple is taking this seriously because we only have 30 days to return the Original phone back to AT&T or we're stuck with the iPhone 4S and its issues. They need to coordinate with the carriers and find out why these phones are producing the sound and come up with a real fix. Everyday that goes could be another person stuck with a phone thats quite great to have but crackles in your ear when you hold the handset to your ear.
Send feed back if you haven't yet.
Hey everyone try this and see if this can help us figure out the issue:
Launch the Apple map app and then hold the back of the phone to your ear (the back meaning the silver Apple logo side). Once the map is open carfully using your finger just touch the map anywhere and through the back of the phone you will hear the static for maybe 10 seconds, then it stops. The touch the map anywhere again and the static starts again.
This is exactly the sound I hear through the earpiece while on a call.
Not sure what this all means but maybe one of us here can work with it.
Otherwise I am forced to try another device if replacements are not showing any promise at the moment. A real shame because otherwise the 4S is awesome.
I am also having the same problem with my 32gb white 4S. When I am on the phone for a long period of time, the other person complains that my voice randomly disappears. I also have a hard time hearing the other person. Their voice sounds like they are mumbling and all I hear is static and a buzzing noise. Hurts my ears to talk on the phone. I called Apple and they told me they cannot guarantee that I will get a brand new Iphone 4s if I request a new one. So I did not continue with the request since I have literally had this phone for less than a week!! I do not think that is fair!! I am hoping this problem will be solved before my 30 day ends, otherwise I am going to return it.
Received 3rd iPhone 4S today. Same issues.
I spoke to Fido, asking if they would let me return the phone and get a refund.
According to Fido, as I have exchanged the phone with Apple it is now Apple's responsibility.
They recommended turning the phone off then back on. Like that was going to work...
Well Apple its up to you now to figure it out, at the cost of one of these phones, its unacceptable.
I will keep exchanging them till i get one that works properly.
The issue is also present when recording a video.
I have recorded several videos and the noise can clearly be heard.
Those buzzing and crackling sounds are carried over into the video.
I had my phone replaced Sunday for the same reason. The second phone has the exact problem. When I talk on the phone and put my opposite hand on the bottom of the phone, the static goes away for about 2-3 seconds. I also spoke with apple corporate today and the nice lady didn't have a clue about the issue. She had a tech call back. He reviewed many of the posts from this string with me on the phone and tried a few troubleshooting tips. We reseated the sim card. No effect. We reloaded apple software so that nothing but ios5 was in the phone and still it did not help. He informed me that there is a firmware update that will come out soon and it may solve the problem. He wasn't clear if this issue specifically was addresses or not In the upcoming firmware update. He also told me that he would contact the engineers with this report and see if they were aware of it. He said he would get back to me with the results of his inquiry. I'll update you guys if and when that happens.
This does suck but not as bad as the apple employees talking **** about LGBTs when I was in the store. Not good charleston sc, king street store. NOT GOOD.
Well, I'm on my third phone. (The first had such a horrible camera...I'm not sure if I noticed the static...)
The second phone had a slight, continual, white noise, staticy sound during calls. It seemed ever-present but especially noticeable when on a call and both parties were silent. I'm not sure my noise is the same as some represented on this discussion board....
Today, I went in to the Apple Store in Charleston really just wanting to know if this a phone-wide issue, in which I would have kept phone #2 b/c I had thoroughly checked its camera. The guy who helped me was nice, but not overly talkative or friendly. He tried a few things. Didn't seem to actually hear the noise...just swapped my phone no questions asked.
And the new phone has the same soft, constant static...
so I'm thinking (at least the static I hear) is some sort of design flaw and maybe some people just don't hear it or are as bothered by it as myself....
I have posted on another thread that my replacement 4s (swapped by Orange UK due to the dreaded static for a new unit 1 week after receipt of original unit on launch day) has not shown any signs of crackling etc. or overheating and has been used a lot with 3 G calls over wide geographical area in UK.
Wondered if the case might be a factor but the same case was used on both units. The only thing that has changed is that the second unit has a crystal clear back protector fitted. Could this have any impact? I am afraid that as the cover went on perfectly and is invisible to the eye ( thanks Phonedevil UK!), I won't be removing it to test.
Unless the second unit now develops the static after 6 days of use, lack of crackle must be either hardware related or possibly down to only other change I.e. back protector. Either way, one for Apple to sort quickly, a lot of unhappy people out thre.
Just got my seconf replacement today and still the same problem. Very dissapointing...
The Genius-Guy tokk me back in an office and we checked the noise on the new device and he confirmed the issue. He even went to see the store's manager and discussed the problem with him. When he was back he stated that they have checked their private 4s' aswell and hear the noise on their phones too.
He was very thankfull that I reported that bug cause I was the first to turn in a phone because of this issue. He said that now they are aware of the problem and will pass it through to the next level.
Not satisfying for me, but let's hope this can be fixed by an iOS-Update.
This Saturday I have an appointment at an apple store to go in exchange my iPhone 4s with another device. This will be my 4th apple iPhone 4s! This static crackling noise while on a call in so irritating!!!!! The funny thing is that every time I go into the Apple store all the technicians say "we haven't had any noise issue complaints in the ear piece like crackling or buzzing or static I even talked to the manager too. When I called Verizon Wireless they wanted me to purchase another 32 gb iPhone 4s from them on the spot and then they would credit me back my money once they received my original 4s in the mail. I told them I can't afford to purchase another one so they referred me to the apple store. I wish Apple would take care of this static issue!!!!!!!!!!
To Mitchellfromripon,
The old "I haven't seen that problem before" is a classic corporate dodge and avoid and maybe they'll go away move. And if they truly haven't seen the problem yet I hope it was their first day working for Apple otherwise it's pure BS.
16 more days to address this or off to some other device as I can NOT tolerate talking on this phone with the static.
I am going to be calling Apple again today. Why? Because the fourth iPhone 4S I have tried is making the same faint crackling/Geiger Counter sound.
If you don't know what a Geiger counter sounds like, here is a link to an example on YouTube.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YW33tWPX34
Now imagine that sound however faint constantly in your ear during a call.
Outside of that the phone seems fine, but I am not happy with the responses I am getting from some smug folk at Apple. This is not our imagination, it's a real issue. acknowledge it and get it fixed. But as we all know I'm basically wasting my breath on this support forum, as I have been told by two managers and counting at the nearby Apple store.
As I was writing this post, AT&T called me. It was a return call for my conversation with them two days ago regarding this static issue....
Just finished talking with them and it seems the towers are fine around my way. So I'm getting on the phone again and going to talk to Apple again. If they still aren't acknowledging this issue, I may have to go back to my iPhone 3G via AT&T buyers remorse policy and wait it out for the iPhone 5 and pray it doesn't make that noise.
Well it's time to call Apple. Later folks. I'll be back with a solution or more drama. It's up to them.
Good luck all. Maybe Consumer Reports should investigate this issue?
So I had my second trip to the iPhone store yesterday. This trip was to have my second phone replaced for the same static issue as the first. After talking with the apple tech for a while we decided to run some trouble shooting test at the store rather than swap it out. As this phone was working a lot better than my first one but with the static of course, and I didn't want to run the risk of getting a phone with issues like my first one or something that hasn't come up yet. Oh and a side by side view of my phone and the tech's showed my screen was way brighter, which he was a little upset about. Anyway he basically wiped my phone clean and said that my original may have corrupted my macbook which is why it loaded onto my second phone when i tried to sync everything. My point is the static is gone so far but I haven't sync anything bk to my phone sense the reset. One thing that was pretty frustrating was when I talked to them about other peoples issues from the forms. I was basically told they don't waste their times with the forms because the people posting on them don't know what they are talking about. I left it at that wrap things up and left. Not sure if this is really helpful but I will update once I sync and see if the static is bk.
No disrespect; but I think that "genius" doesn't know what he's talking about if wiping your phone is his 'solution'.
Would be extremely surprised if this would solve your problems.
