We bought (3) iphones 4S for the family, two of them experience the echo and muffled issue. I exchange one and was happy with the replacement. The second iphone, we have to exchange it 2 more times until we were happy with the call quality. The apple genius was a jerk about it. Told us this was the last time they are going to replace it. I have a call into the apple store to complain. I have spent over $800 at apple and they have soured me from future purchases.
If you have the echo issue take it back.
Still ok ? Many people are waiting for update before service and refurb device.
For those who have become part of this discussion since I last posted, the issue, minor if I may add since software will address it, seems to be related to using the top antenna. Even if you replace your phone you will get a similar situation until the software update arrives. For those who claim to have the issue resolved with a replacement, it's only a matter of time until you are in a scenario where it repeats itself.
For sanity purposes, simply place your finger along the top of the phone or grab it from the top touching the top area and your hiss should go away as the software-based antenna switching will simply reroute to signals to another part of the antenna.
This doesn't necessearily mean there is an issue with antenna however, it may likely be a sensitive speaker which is not sealed sufficiently much like speakers are sensitive to edge-based cellphones like the blackberry. These are all speculative, however there seems to be good justification for these comments based on previous people resolving the hiss when grabbing the phone from the top.
Thanks.
Me too - I also have this problem on voice calls, happens after a few minutes, so bad I can barely hear the other person and need to hang up and re-try. Almost in the position where I can't use my 4s for voice calls.
please do fix apple ! 😟
thanks
Matt
I went to iP4 for resolve this problem.
Wife and I are about 2 weeks away from deciding to return the (3) iphones and going back to T-mobile. I dont think its a software issue because it would be global wide and 99% of the users arent reporting anything.
Waiting on an update? The genius bar and apple techs arent acknowledging the problem exist. I am soo incredibly frustrated with my experience thus far.
I love love my iphone but I cant stand talking on it.
I'm not sure if everyone in this thread is talkiing about the same issue. I think their are two issues mixed up in this thread.
One is the echo-thing. As stated, this may could be solved by placing the fingers as discribed.
The second one, is the one I'm having trouble with. It's a sound that can be heard when using an App which transfers data (in any possible way), phone, Safari, facebook etc. over 3G. This sound one may hear is coming from inside the phone. It can be heared best on the back side of the iPhone in the area around the iPhone-logo. When you aer not on a call you will hardly hear the sound because the phone isn't anywhere near you ear. But when on a call, the phone needs to transfer data and you will hear the sound because the phone should be right next to your ear.
As stated I'm on my third phone and still having this issue.
I'm going crazy with this static issue. I thought that maybe today we be upgrade but I see nothing. Thanks God that I still have my old iP4 and I changed the sim cards. Eeeh Apple... I'm going to sell 4S.
I too have this problem on my AT&T 16gb Black iPhone 4S bought directly from an AT&T store release day morning. It's very annoying.
I can hear the same static in Voicemail playback too. I didn't look at all 9 pages to see if others mentioned this.
I have problem on Orange and T-mobile. Of course only on 3G. Edge is ok but Apple forgot switch button :)
Every app on 3G with data transmition make static noise. Take iP to your ear and check it ;)
I went to the Apple store today to try to exchange hy handset for the 3rd time.
I don't remember the last time I was so poorly treated. The Apple Genius, played with the phone for a bit and said that he could not reproduce the issue. He said that I am obviously doing something wrong. What I am doing wrong? Surprised and very offemded by his comment, I asked him to explain. He said that after 3 phones if I still had the issue that I obviously did not know. how to properly use an iPhone. He then proceeded to say, my manager will make an exception and replace the handset, but if you come back again we won't be so polite and forget about changing it again the issue is obviously with the way you use the phone. Went on to claim that I was an isolated case. No one else had complained about the issue. Very calmly and paitiently asked if the issue could not be a production issue. He said it was impossible and Apple could not have such issues. I reminded him of the iPhone 4 antena issue. He cut me off and said they were out of stock and to come back another day.
Wow, great job Apple. Having an issue and working to fix it is ok; insulting clients that have been with you for several years not ok.
I've made a similar expirience here in the Apple Store in Hamburg. The Genius-Guy denied that there is a sound. He refused to take the phone in a quitier area to ckeck for the sound. Said that it has to be an issue with the carrier (T-Mobil). The Guy was very, very unfriendly. I wonder about the requirements to work at the Genius-Bar? Being a jerk???
Of course it's always hard to reproduce the problem because of the noise in an Apple Store. But that guy was rude.
I also was told I am the first to rerport that problem. But I can not believe that.
@ SVMini
I had the same incident with my wife's iphone 4S, on the 3rd exchange. Genius did the same thing and was rude about it.
I call into the store and talked to the Store Manager. He apolized for the genius and will talk to genius that worked with me about his manners. The store manager went above and beyond to keep me happy. He said that kind of treat will never happen again at his store.
So call and dont let some jerkoff with a powertrip get you down.
I hope Apple will do something about this.
It's freaking ridiculous that a $700 phone doesn't work like it's supposed to.
Sure it's fast and the camera is great.
But the battery life is crap and so is the annoying static your hear when you use 3G.
