iOS5 Mail crashing

Since installing iOS5 on my first-gen iPad, and also on iOS5 on my newly delivered iPhone 4S, I have had the Mail app crash on a regular basis for me. The first several times it crashed shortly after loading, so no harm was done, but this afternoon I started writing a long email response to someone on the iPhone and it crashed back to the home screen in the middle of that and lost all my edits. So I tried composing the same email espouse on the iPad, and then the same thing happened and I lost all my edits a second time. I now realize that, until a patch for Mail comes out, I can no longer rely upon it for any serious email usage, and that is very disappointing.

Is it just my pair of iOS5 devices that are suffering from this, or are others seeing the same thing?

Thanks,

- David

Iphone 4s had many mail crashes. My wife determined this was only when mail from her Twitter account was in her inbox.

After deleting Twitter mail from inbox (using different email client/machine/webmail) crash stopped.

Time to disable Twitter messages, until Apple pulls their head out!

Hope this help some folks landing here and reading the 10+ pages!

It just happened to me on iOS 5.0.1 while composing a longer email. I was foolish to think that I could switch to Safari to copy an URL that I wanted to include in the email, and upon switching back to mail, the email's entire content had disappeared. Worse even, mail saved this new "content" of the email as the draft on the server, so even on the server the email that I had spent over an hour to write had vanished.

I was running mail on my iPhone 3GS (32 GB), working with my iCloud account. No other app was running at the time I was going to the home screen to launch Safari. The System Log had this to say at around the same time:

22 Jan 2012 12:25:13 PM - SpringBoard [15] (Warning): Failed to snapshot Mail

I am seriously infuriated to find that this might be a known issue that simply hasn't been addressed for months.

As it stands right now, mail on iOS 5 simply is *not* usable for composing long emails, as silly as it sounds.

God knows that the bloody problem is!!

I have reinstalled iOS5 3 times on my iphone 4 and tried to restore from itunes and icloud but each time it pushed a number of emails thru but then gets stuck in a loop.

I have even set up the phone as a new phone and lost everything in the hope that resolves it but no joy.

Even the reminders are not appearing in the notifications menu.

Thought it was an icloude problem so disabled that but still no joy...

Feel like going back to 4.3.5...!!!! SORT IT OUT APPLE...!

It's a shame that this is happening... my mail accounts won't push the emails thru unless they setup as pop/imap accounts and haven't done so for 2 days or so...

HOWEVER!!!!!

As I type this, guess what.... they have started to come thru...!

I have sent test ones from hotmail to gmail and back and they have worked instantly... obviously there is a huge problem somewhere with this new iOS5 but mine started randomly on Friday night and after 3 different restores it still didn't fix it and as you have said, resetting and replacing it has not worked... may downgrade to 4.3.5

I can confirm as well that removing spotlight searching of email did not improve the situation. I also rebooted the phone and the crashes occur after as well.

I have also noticed that the mail app can be open with no interaction (not writing or reading an email -- like being in the list of messages in the inbox of my .mac account) and the app will crash and I'm back to the home screen. This I have seen more than once and makes me think there could be a timing issue with something else happening in the background that may affect you when you're writing emails, but it may just crash on it's own as well.

Has anyone else noticed this?

I'm not convinced that the length of the email is the cause in my case. I've experienced a couple of crashes with very little written in the email body.

I have my font size set to medium for mail, and I just pasted what amounted to 320 wrapped lines into an email message to myself. There was no problem and I have spotlight search on. Perhaps this is not the cause, or at least not the sole cause. Maybe when you guys say "long" emails you mean longer than that?
