iOS5 Mail crashing

Since installing iOS5 on my first-gen iPad, and also on iOS5 on my newly delivered iPhone 4S, I have had the Mail app crash on a regular basis for me. The first several times it crashed shortly after loading, so no harm was done, but this afternoon I started writing a long email response to someone on the iPhone and it crashed back to the home screen in the middle of that and lost all my edits. So I tried composing the same email espouse on the iPad, and then the same thing happened and I lost all my edits a second time. I now realize that, until a patch for Mail comes out, I can no longer rely upon it for any serious email usage, and that is very disappointing.

Is it just my pair of iOS5 devices that are suffering from this, or are others seeing the same thing?

Thanks,

- David

Maybe this has already been suggested, I didn't read all 10 pages...

I have the same issue with drafts hanging and being unable to send or cancel. Quit mail, reopen and its the same. This morning I quit mail AND deleted it from the multitask bar. Reopened and was able to at least hit the cancel button and get back to my email list. Mail worked fine after, although I didn't try the drafts again.

Not fixed but at least I can move on and wait for bug fix.

iPhone 4. iOS 5.0.1. Mail app crashes on a regular basis. Never while composing an email, only when opening the app. Looks like the app "crashes" in the background since I don't get any email notifications. When I launch the app, it's unresponsive for approx. 5 seconds and then it closes. Re-open and it works fine.

I've had my iPhone replaced 3 times, having the exact same issue.

Same problem here! only on iphone 4s. every time i open mail, it freezes for anywhere between 10-30 secs. if i wait, it will either load forever, and/or crash. if i choose to close, either by closing the app/ or also on multitasking , , i get a blank screen, then it crashes. when i reopen, all seems well. Then, out of the blue, it will freeze up again for no reason and the same thing happens. never lost content, and never had any problems working with android/ email signatures. not yet a solution! since 5.0 this has been happening! anyone else try anything??

They make it sound like it's MY problem........non stop crashes everyday on both iPhone and iPad with the latest OS.....now they want me to purge all my mail accounts and re-enter them one at a time and keep testing to try to isolate the problem.....I am also using multiple ISPs....so it's not any particular company......this is ridiculous.....I've also swapped out phones from the Apple store and that's not the problem either.....I cannot depend on using my mail app as it can crash at any given time when I'm in the middle of composing......I keep copying the content as I go along in case I lose all that I wrote at that moment.....frustrating. It's gotta be an update that would fix this problem, but they just won't acknowledge the problem.

The saga continues...

I did reset all the accounts, no help...the crash occurs with all of them...even one at a time. so no Virginia, that ain't the answer....SO what should we do...lets return our phones to the CARRIERS and demand a refund...maybe when ATT, Verizon, and Sprint plus the folks oversees scream...maybe THEN Apple would get off the stick...I'm sure they are busy getting ready to peave the customer base by bringing out the new Ipad afew weeks after Christmas.

This sounds exactly the same as the issue I'm having, except mine is the iphone 4 not 4s. I find that closing the app down and then closing it in the multitask bar is the quickest way to get my mail open again, although I do still have to wait for several seconds after I've closed the app in the multitask.

Has anyone sent feedback to Apple on this, and maybe even copied them in on this thread? Usually Apple are on the ball but they've been pretty poor at picking up on this imo.

On one of my visits to the Genius Bar to address this issue, the woman who assisted me played with the phone for a few minutes until she was able to experience the problem first-hand, and she said that she was going to write a letter to Apple HQ to tell them about the issue. I also had my phone set to automatically send diagnostic info to Apple for the entire month that I was experiencing this, which means that they got roughly 600 crash notifications (~20 crashes per day for ~30 days) from my phone alone. However, it sounds like the thing that was causing my crashes was not resposible for all of the crash issues that I've been reading about on this thread.

Making sure your phone is set to send diagnostic info to Apple is probably one of the best things you can do to make sure Apple is aware of these issues.

I agree with you totally...I use gmail & when forwarding email to say 40 or 50 of my recipients, it always ceases half way thru then I have to do it all over again. Been to Genius Bar 6times & had the phone replaced twice since Nov'11 & still crashed. Tried everything incl restore, rest all settings & reset mail setting doesn't help either. Apple won't take responsibility or take ownership on this issue. On one visit to the Genius Bar, this chap said to me that I don't enough memory on my phone to do the work, so I said to him I have a old Window desktop at home that has less memory than my iPhone & it works fine. Telephone support just tells me to try this & that sending me links. Also the other day I've received SMS notification while I was doing mail & it froze on me as well.

I've been loyal to Apple for many years, having own iphone3G, iPod, iMac27" & iPad. I hate to abandon ship now so Apple better fix this issue & fast.

By the way have anyone notice that you can't delet photos in the "Photo Stream" folder??
